A REGION OF CITIES

The Northeast has a nearly unbroken chain of cities that run from Boston to
NYC to Washington, D.C.

In these big cities thousands of people commute (travel to work)

This region is considered a megalopolis.

A region where the cities and suburbs have grown so close together that they form one big
urban area

The NE is the most densely populated region of the US.


Population density: avg number of people per square mile

The NEs economy is based on its cities. Many were founded in colonial times,
along rivers or near the Atlantic.

They began as transportation and trade centers.


Today, manufacturing, finance, communications, and government are the main jobs.

BOSTON

In colonial times, known as the hub of the universe


The American Revolution began when the British marched
from Boston to Concord in 1775.

Known for research centers and universities.

Harvard (oldest university in the US) and MIT in Cambridge

Famous for its medical, science, and technology centers.


Some of the best medical schools and hospitals are in Boston.

PHILADELPHIA: THE CRADLE OF THE NATION

An important city in early history of the US


It was once the capital of the US
Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written here by the
Founding Fathers.

George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton,
James Monroe and, Benjamin Franklin.

1700s: financial, political, and commercial center of the US


Today: industrial center, located on the Delaware River

Land and water transportation routes pass through here


Many factories process food, produce medical supplies, and manufacture chemicals
Center of the health care industry

From 1892 to 1954, immigrants entered the US through Ellis Island


Today, it is a national monument

Boston and Philadelphia

1700s: German immigrants entered through Philadelphia


1800s: Irish immigrants entered through Boston and Philadelphia

All 3 cities are rich in ethnic diversity
