HOUSE RULES

This document describes the duties and responsibilities of Ms. Mailan Falculan of the School of
Languages, Humanities, and Social Sciences of Mapa Institute of Technology, Intramuros, Manila
hereafter called The Instructor and every officially enrolled student of ENG 13-C6 during the Second
Term of S.Y. 2014-2015 at Mapa Institute of Technology, Intramuros, Manila hereafter called The
Student.
The duties and responsibilities described in this document are effective only for the class ENG 13
(English for the Workplace 2) section C6 conducted at Mapa Institute of Technology, Intramuros,
Manila hereafter called ENG 13 from the 7th of October to the 20th of December, 2014 hereafter called
the term every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Mapa Institute of
Technologys South Building, Room 306 hereafter called class time.
The said parties, for the consideration hereinafter mentioned, hereby agree to the following:
1. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The Student should have earned a Final MELT Score of 3.50 (equivalent to 3.00 in the Mapa
Institute of Technology grading system) or higher at the end of the term to pass ENG 13. The
official and latest Mapa Institute of Technologys Grading System will be used to transmute The
Students Final average and give The Student his/her Final Grade.
2. TOEIC
The Student is solely responsible for securing his/her TOEIC examination from third parties:
Mapa Institute of Technologys Center for Continuing Education and Special Competencies
(CCESC) and Hopkins International Partners, Inc. (Hopkins). The Student recognizes that The
Instructor is not, in any way, affiliated with the said third parties and that The Instructor is free of
any responsibility in any difficulty that The Student experienced before, during, or after taking
his/her TOEIC.
3. CLASS ATTENDANCE
a. The Student should not be absent for more than six (6) meetings as per the rules of Mapa
Institute of Technology on class attendance.
b. If The Student was absent for a meeting or more, he/she is solely responsible for asking
his/her classmates about the events that happened in ENG 13 during his/her absence/s.
c. If The Student enters the classroom fifteen (15) minutes or later after the official class time,
he/she should be allowed entrance to the classroom; however, he/she will be marked absent
on that meeting only.

4. ACADEMIC CONSULTATION
a. The Student is entitled to a consultation with The Instructor. Agreed methods of consultation
are: Facebook personal message and face-to-face. Face-to-face consultation outside of class
time is by appointment and within the school premises only. The Student is solely responsible
for claiming this right.
b. The Instructor reserves the right (1) when to answer an academic inquiry sent via Facebook
personal message and (2) to deny response to questions of the following nature: whose
answer has already been mentioned in class, and which can be best answered by a reference
material (e.g. Google, dictionary, textbook.)
5. MAKE-UP ACTIVITY
The Student is entitled to make up for an activity he/she missed in a class absence if and only if
he/she meets the requirements and procedures listed below:
a. The Student must present to The Instructor the supporting document corresponding to his/her
reason of absence, not later than three consecutive meetings after The Student has attended
the class after his/her absence/s. Accepted supporting documents are listed below:
1) original copy of The Students medical certificate with dry seal;
2) a copy of the death certificate of The Students immediate kin;
3) an excuse letter signed by The Students parent or guardian and the signatorys valid ID
or its photocopy for signature comparison.
4) an excuse letter signed by the class instructor or school organization adviser for whose
curricular or extracurricular activity The Student had to attend during ENG 13 class time.
b. The Student must set with The Instructor a time, date, and location for the make-up activity.
The Student must comply with the schedule he/she and The Instructor had set, and is only
allowed to re-schedule the make-up class only once.
c. The Student is solely responsible for claiming this right. If The Student fails to complete the
requirements and procedures listed above, he/she waives any claim to the said make-up
activity anytime during or after the term.
6. USE OF GADGETS
a. The Student should refrain from using any telecommunication and computer device (e.g.
mobile phone, laptop, game console) during class time unless instructed or permitted by The
Instructor. If The Student violates this condition, The Instructor may ask The Student to leave
the classroom and deny him/her entrance on that meeting only.
b. The Student, however, may ask permission from The Instructor to answer an SMS or call
outside the classroom. When granted permission, The Student is entitled to be admitted back
in the classroom.
7. DISRUPTIVE AND DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR
If The Student exhibits a disruptive behavior during class time and/or disrespectful behavior,
either physical or verbal, toward The Instructor and/or any classmate during class time, The
Instructor may ask The Student either to leave the classroom and deny him/her entrance on that
meeting only, or to send him/her to the Prefect of Discipline for appropriate action.

8. LATE SUBMISSION OF CLASS OUTPUT


If The Student submits a class output later than the agreed deadline, The Instructor may deny
acceptance of the said output and/or deny The Student any credit for the said output.
9. ATTENTION TO DETAIL
If The Student submits a class output that does not meet the requirements and standards set by the
Instructor, The Instructor may deny acceptance of the said output, deny The Student any credit
for the said output, or award The Student only partial credits for the said output.
10. USE OF CANVAS
Canvas is the only recognized platform for online quizzes/exams and online submission of class
outputs in ENG 13 unless otherwise instructed by The Instructor. The following rules will be
observed in using Canvas:
a. The Student will be given a minimum of 24 hours to take a quiz or submit an output on
Canvas.
b. If The Student was unable to take a quiz/exam or submit an individual output due to
unawareness or forgetting of accomplishing the said activity and/or of the deadline, he/she
will not be allowed to take a make-up activity.
c. The Student is solely responsible for ensuring that his/her quiz or output is successfully
submitted online and in reporting inability to take a quiz/exam or submit an output due to
sickness (bound by Section 5) and other circumstances beyond his/her control.
d. The Student recognizes that The Instructor is free of any responsibility for any technical error
or malfunction experienced during or after using Canvas.

11. USE OF FACEBOOK GROUP


The official ENG 13 Facebook group is the only recognized platform for online announcements,
and online information and class material dissemination. The Student is solely responsible for
ensuring that he/she is a member of the official ENG 13 Facebook group and for checking the
said group regularly. If The Student was unable to take a quiz/exam or submit an individual
output due to inability to read and/or understand The Instructors Facebook group post
announcing or discussing the said requirement, he/she will not be allowed to take a make-up
activity.

12. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY


If The Student submits an output that is proven to be a product of academic dishonesty (e.g.
plagiarism, copying a classmates quiz/exam answers, or letting somebody else to take a ENG 13
quiz/exam or write an output on his/her behalf), The Instructor may deny The Student any credit
for the said output or employ Mapa Institute of Technologys rules on cheating to give The
Student the appropriate sanction.

13. GROUP ACTIVITIES


a. If The Student is proven to have not made any substantial contribution to a group output, The
Instructor may deny him/her any credit or award him/her only partial credits for the said
output.
b. If one or some of The Students group members drop out of class, officially or unofficially,
during the period of a graded group activity, The Student agrees to continue on
accomplishing the said activity even in the event that he/she is the only member left in the
group.
14. GRADE VERIFICATION
The Student is entitled to a Grade Verification, which is a period of time that The Instructor will
set in order for her class to verify their class standing and/or the recorded scores of his/her
quizzes, exams, and Final Average in her official class record. The Instructor will set the time,
date, method, and other pertaining details of the Grade Verification. The Student is solely
responsible for claiming this right. After the period of Grade Verification lapses, all scores in The
Instructors class record is recognized as correct and true.
15. GRADE OF INC
The Student acknowledges the fact that he/she may earn a grade of INC if and only if his/her
complete or partial TOEIC results were released later than the terms last day of submission of
final grades to The Registrar. If The Student earns a grade of INC, he/she is solely responsible
for contacting The Instructor and other related individuals (e.g. CCESC and Hopkins) next term
to complete his/her TOEIC deficiency and any other university procedures related to the said
completion.
