4. Oil Fired Power Plant Advantages/Disadvantages

Advantages:
It is a known technology;
easier than alternative fuels to build power station;
very responsive - can kick in fairly quickly to compensate for other less reliable energy sources (e.g. wind power) or in times of high demand;
fuel requires no pre-processing and no special disposal safeguards;
fuel is currently readily available;
gas power stations do not have the security implications of nuclear power plants.

Disadvantages:
Gas is a finite, dwinding natural resource;
Gas supplies increasingly come from overseas so, economically, they are an import;
Overseas suppliers (e.g. Russia) use gas supply as a political tool. They could bring a country to its knees but cutting off gas supplies;
There are few sources of gas so there is little competition in the market;
Burning gas releases CO2 which is believed to contribute to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

1 hydroelectric power plant layout

1. Hydroelectric power plant schematic

1. Hydroelectric power plant advan/disadvan.

ADVANTAGES:
1. Once a dam is constructed, electricity can be produced at a constant rate.
2. If electricity is not needed, the sluice gates can be shut, stopping electricity generation. The water can be
saved for use another time when electricity demand is high.
3. Dams are designed to last many decades and so can contribute to the generation of electricity for many
years / decades.
4. The lake that forms behind the dam can be used for water sports and leisure / pleasure activities. Often
large dams become tourist attractions in their own right.
5. The lake's water can be used for irrigation purposes.
6. The build up of water in the lake means that energy can be stored until needed, when the water is
released to produce electricity.
7. When in use, electricity produced by dam systems do not produce green house gases. They do not
pollute the atmosphere.

DISADVANATGES:

3. The flooding of large areas of land means that the natural environment is destroyed.
4. People living in villages and towns that are in the valley to be flooded, must move out. This means
that they lose their farms and businesses. In some countries, people are forcibly removed so that
hydro-power schemes can go ahead.
5. The building of large dams can cause serious geological damage. For example, the building of the
Hoover Dam in the USA triggered a number of earth quakes and has depressed the earths surface at
its location.
2. Geothermal power plant layout

3. Geothermal power plant schematic

2.geothermal power plant advan/disadvan

Advantages:

Geothermal energy cost is extremely low compared to many other energy sources.
It has low pollution compared to fossil fuels and nuclear energy.
Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source.
Almost no environmental impact when using geothermal heat from nuclear decay.
Geothermal heat pump systems can reduce your energy use storing heat from the summer/sun and makes
use of it in the night and winter. Low maintenance systems.

Disadvantages:

The most important disadvantage is absolutely the geological problem. The heat source is mostly close to
volcanic activity of some sort.
Chemicals are byproducts of the production electricity with hot ground water. Some geothermal plants use
a lot of water and it needs to go somewhere its after use. Some of the polluting chemicals in that water
and steam are sulfur, mercury, hydrogen sulfide, arsenic, ammonia.
Earth is a changing creature. A drilled hole in the ground could supply thousands of homes heat and one
earthquake could change that in a second. It can also change gradually over time.
Location, location, location. That is certainly true of geothermal energy. It cannot be transported over vast
distances. If used to heat up houses or for hot tap water it is only the quality of the pipe that delivers the
water that determines how far it can go and if it will be of any use when it arrives. If the heat is used for
electrical production it helps to have plants close so the energy loss is not too great.

2. Coalfire powerplant layout

3. Coal fire powerplant schematic

3 coal fired power plant advan/disadvan.

Advantages of using coal to produce electricity:

Coal energy is an affordable energy source because of the coals stable price compared to other fuel sources

Coal is easy to burn

Coal produces high energy upon combustion

Coal energy is inexpensive

Coal is abundant

Coal energy is a reliable energy source

Disadvantages of using coal to produce electricity:

Coal energy produces large amount of carbon dioxide which leads to global warming and climate change

The burning of coal is not environmental friendly because it produces harmful byproducts and gas emissions such as sulfur dioxide,

carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide that causes pollution to the environment including acid rain
Coal energy is nonrenewable energy source

Coal is fast depleting because we consume too much of it

Coal mining ruins the environment and puts the lives of people specially the coal miners in danger
