Citrix XenApp is a Windows(r) application delivery system that centralizes application management into the datacenter and enables
on-demand application delivery to users anywhere using any device. Utilizing integrated application virtualization technology, XenApp
overcomes the challenges associated with archaic application deployment methods to reduce the cost of application management by
up to 50 percent, deliver applications instantly to users and secure application access
Creating a multiple pre-configured application installs for each operating system via application packaging
Testing and troubleshooting these application packages against various user configurations to draw out inter-application and
platform compatibility issues
Re-testing each application package on each operating system or user configuration
Scheduling remote application deployment to specific user groups
Troubleshooting failed application deployment and compatibility issues
Repeating the process with each application update
As a method of application management, application deployment is mired by a number of challenges including compatibility issues
between applications, application packaging and remote install reliability issues, platform support limitations, and the fact that all user
devices must be managed PCs or a member of the domain. Furthermore, there are many hidden costs which can almost double the
expense of application management when compared to modern application packaging and delivery methods. These include higher
hardware and support costs as well as significant business inefficiencies related to lack of IT agility.
With application virtualization, a single package is created vs. the multiple packages needed with application deployment
2.
Testing and troubleshooting application virtualization packages is far easier and takes less time because fewer user
configurations need testing when compared to traditional application deployment and installation solutions.
Application virtualization packages are delivered on-demand as opposed to traditional application deployment which is
scheduled for installation during off-peak hours. This ensures that all users get the applications they need when they need
them.
Troubleshooting is far easier with application virtualization because issues are corrected once and are fixed for all users
instantly. Self-healing technology means that applications will always run as if they were freshly installed. This is in contrast to
traditional application deployment where issues must be resolved individually on each user device and where correcting
problems can sometimes require a fresh installation.
Application virtualization is far less resource intensive than application deployment because updates are configured once
and propogate to all users instantly.

Application virtualization with XenApp delivers users the applications they need on-demand and avoids many of the problems
associated with traditional application deployment. In fact, Citrix XenApp has been shown to reduce application management costs by
up to 50%.

5. Secure by design
Centralized application management and application virtualization is the most secure architecture for delivering applications. With
hosted application delivery, XenApp keeps data in the datacenter while only screen updates, mouse clicks and keystrokes transit the
network. For local application delivery and as an extra added security measure for hosted applications, centralized password control,
multi-factor authentication, encrypted delivery and a hardened SSL VPN appliance eliminate the chance for loss or theft of data. Builtin configuration logging and SmartAuditor technology enable IT to track system changes and even record user activity into a video file
to keep a visual record of system and application use for security and litigation purposes. Application management with XenApp
makes increases application portability and user productivity while ensuring data security and IT access control.

Key benefits
XenServer has fast become a leading virtualization technology with over 5,000 customers and enterprise-class features that rival
leading virtualization platforms. XenServer, as recently reviewed by Allan Stevens of ZDnet, is very much a production-class
virtualization solution with features that match, and in some cases exceed, whats available on rival platforms.
Best virtualization value Starting with the virtualization power of the industry-leading Xen hypervisor at no cost, users
can extend their savings into capital equipment, space, power and cooling costs.
Enterprise-class features Centralized multi-server management and live migration using XenMotion enables users to
manage the virtualized environment easily and intelligently while optimizing resource with zero-downtime to users.
Easy setup and administration Being easy to use is just one reason XenServer was named the Most Innovative Product
of the Year for virtualization in 2008 by VARBusiness. XenServer can be installed and running in about 10 minutes (10 to
Xen) and also has a unique management architecture that eliminates single points of failure. Easily manage hundreds of
virtual machines with the included XenCenter management console that installs with only 4 megabytes of storage.
Available at no cost, Citrix XenServer gives organizations a way to widely adopt an enterprise-class, cloud-proven virtualization
platform to dramatically affect the economics of delivering IT.
Free hypervisors with limited functionality have been around for a long time. We see this
move as substantially different because it offers a competitive, enterprise-ready virtual
infrastructure platform with full centralized management, live motion and support for unlimited
VMs and serverswith no strings attached. Anyone who dismissed XenServer in the past as
a legitimate player in the enterprise virtualization space clearly owes it to themselves to take
a look at this offering.

What is Xen?
Xen is a unique open source technology invented by a team led by Ian Pratt at the University of Cambridge and developed
cooperatively by the worlds best engineers at over 20 of the most innovative datacenter solution vendors. With Xen server
virtualization solutions, a thin software layer (known as the Xen hypervisor) is installed directly on the hardware, or bare metal, and is
thereby inserted between the servers hardware and the operating system. This provides an abstraction layer that allows each
physical server to run one or more virtual servers, effectively decoupling the operating system and its applications from the underlying
physical server. Xens paravirtualization technology is widely acknowledged as the fastest and most secure virtualization software in
the industry and is enhanced by taking full advantage of the latest Intel VT and AMD-V hardware virtualization assist capabilities.
The Xen hypervisor is exceptionally lean- about 50,000 lines of code-which translates to extremely low overhead and near-native
performance for guests.
Citrix Essentials for XenServer extends advanced virtualization management capabilities to Citrix XenServer environments to
help customers create highly scalable, manageable and agile virtual infrastructures. The solution extends the enterprise management
capabilities of XenServer in the areas of lab automation, storage management, provisioning services, workflow automation and high

Citrix NetScaler
Makes Web applications run 5X better
Citrix NetScaler is a Web application delivery appliance that accelerates performance, provides L4-7 traffic management, offers an
integrated application firewall and off loads servers to ensure application availability, increased security and substantially lower costs.
It reduces TCO of Web application delivery, optimizes the user experience and makes applications run five times better. NetScalers
parallel processing nCore technology leverages multi-core processors to provide unprecedented performance and scalability for
even the most challenging web applications.
Deployed in front of Web servers, NetScaler combines high-speed load balancing and content switching with application acceleration,
data compression, content caching, SSL acceleration, network optimization and application performance monitoring. Unlike other
approaches that require multiple point products, NetScaler is an all-in-one appliance that is easy to deploy and operate.
Reduce TCO with an all-in-one appliance that takes the load off of over-burdened networks. By offloading servers from things
they dont do well, such as compute-intensive tasks and repetitive network processing functions, NetScaler reduces server costs by
up to 80 percent. When combined with in-memory cache that delivers dynamic content directly, Citrix NetScaler delivers more
applications to more users with a dramatic reduction in servers and network devices. It also allows you to deploy new Web 2.0
applications without massive infrastructure changes.
Optimize the user experience by accelerating web application performance by 5X or more. NetScaler sends traffic to the
right server with intelligent content switching and leverages advanced multi-level compression for the best possible performance and
greatest network bandwidth savings. Dynamic content caching instantly delivers frequently requested content directly from NetScaler
to further enhance the user experience. End-user experience monitoring enables you to monitor the application performance at the
user to measure the total benefit of NetScaler acceleration capabilities.
Secure Web apps by blocking attacks and protecting sensitive information from unauthorized access. Day zero attack
protection and integrated XML security prevents the loss of valuable corporate and customer data, and aids in compliance with
regulations such as PCI-DSS. Comprehensive AAA capabilities, married with a powerful DoS shield, allow secure remote access
while preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Ensure apps are always available by dynamically responding to changing workloads. NetScaler provides overload sense
and response to optimize use of server resources even with unpredictable traffic. Activating capacity on demand automatically
reallocates resources, and adds or subtracts back-end capacity in response to traffic volume without interrupting the application or
application user. L4-L7 load balancing ensures 100 percent uptime for all users and makes sure there is no single point of failure.
Global Server Load Balancing ensures that applications are available to all users worldwide, and forms a key element for disaster
recovery strategies

AppExpert Visualizer
The AppExpert Visualizer graphically illustrates how requests and
responses flow through NetScaler, and what policies act where. It
provides a graphical, tree-based, hierarchical view of the entities (e.g.,
content switching VServers, LB VServers, service pools, individual
services and health checks) that compose the NetScaler configuration, as
well as their current health. The AppExpert Visualizer simplifies monitoring
and managing the complex configurations todays Web applications
require. View a demo of AppExpert Visualizer.

For example, Web site capacity can be effectively increased by content-switching requests coming from spiders, Web scrapers or
botnets to a dedicated mirror-site, so that the main Web site is freed from the heavy load this traffic generates.
XML Security
The NetScaler Application Firewall module now includes an XML-aware engine that powers specific XML attack protections. In
addition to protecting XML-based applications from attack, NetScaler ensures that incoming XML traffic conforms to the appropriate
standards (e.g., XML syntax, schema, WSDL validation).
URL Transformation
NetScaler 9 can provide on the fly content modification of client requests and server responses to rewrite HTTP URLs. This enables
the modification of displayed URLs without the need to modify the back-end server structure, and vice versa.
Body URL Rewrite is frequently used within the context of either SSL VPNs or Web application firewalls. However, it has uses beyond
these as well. For example, body URL rewrite can simplify application or infrastructure change management by allowing back-end
URLs to be altered without requiring changes to the applications presentation layer, or for Akamai-zing graphics content.
Entity Templates
Entity Templates provide the means for administrators to create templates for specific entities (e.g., a LB VServer, CS VServer) in
order to simplify the creation of additional instances of the same entity, and reduce the potential for configuration errors.
Entity templates will prove very useful when used in conjunction with NetScalers role-based administration (RBA) functionality.
Specifically, more privileged NetScaler administrators can create entity templates for specific functions and then delegate the use of
these templates to administrators with lesser privileges. By doing this, NetScaler superusers can simultaneously constrain the actions
of lesser privileged and experienced administrators, and simplify things for these same administrators.
IPv6 support for XenApp client connections are now supported, meeting U.S. Federal Government requirements for IPv6
support.
Single sign-on to file shares improves user experience by minimizing authentication prompts.
Clientless access to Microsoft SharePoint 2003 and 2007 expands user mobility by ensuring easy and secure access to
SharePoint sites from any Web browser.
Historical charting graphical reporting provides administrators with detailed views on system activity and simplifies
management by presenting trend data in an intuitive format.
IPv6 Support
NetScaler 9 provides end-to-end support for IPv6, greatly enhancing the initial NetScaler IPv6 implementation available in NetScaler
8.1. NetScaler 9.0 natively supports and manages client-side and server-side IPv6 traffic as well bidirectional IPv4 to IPv6 translation.
Akamai Integration
Working with Akamai, NetScaler 9 preserves and presents to applications source ClientIPs for requests that come in via the Akamai
cloud. This is critical for auditing or fraud detection purposes.

2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Security Wipe provides the ability to completely erase the NetScaler configuration.
Configuration diffing enables administrators to identify differences between the running and saved NetScaler configurations.
The performance of the NetScaler GUI is improved by four to five times.
The AppExpert Visual Policy Builder (the GUI interface used to create NetScaler policies) has been simplified, streamlining
the creation of most NetScaler policies.
Integration of the NetScaler configuration GUI and the real-time performance statistics minimizes the need for NetScaler
administrators to switch back and forth between the configuration and dashboard tabs within the NetScaler GUI.
AppExpert Expression Evaluator allows administrators to test how expressions will evaluate HTTP content prior to binding
expressions to policies.
