Amazonehaven.
6.2 Scheepsuitrusting
With ships equipment, we among other things mean anchors, chains, towage lines and hawsers, winches, windlasses, capstans, guide pulleys and ships bollards here.
In almost all the ports in the world, vessels are moored
using the lines that are present on the ship. Depending
on the size of the ship, they need to be able to absorb the
allowable loads and a vessel must be equipped with sufficient amounts of equipment that also needs to be reliable. The captain and shipping company are responsible for the condition of the aforementioned equipment.
Legal conditions are in place for anchors and hawsers
and the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has drawn up guidelines for the calculation of anchors, hawsers and anchor chains. If all legal
requirements are met, a classification society will issue
a certificate.
In addition, fixed bollards are positioned on the ships
deck. The heavy winches are often positioned in the
same direction as the anchors and the bow and stern
hawsers. In order to be able to absorb the substantial loads, hawsers are often led through various discs,
winches, rollways and capstans and are put under constant tension. This can entail as much as 20 to 30 metres
of hawser length, which is positioned on the ships deck
as a loom.

Equipment Nummer
/ + 2 B hO + 0,1 A
120
Safe Mooring
Equipment number
For the design of the heaviest of ships equipment, formulae have been drawn up by the IACS for all the vessel
types mentioned above in order to come to a so-called
Equipment number.
The formula used to calculate the Equipment Number
is:
/ + 2 B hO + 0.1 A
Verklaring tekens:
= waterverplaatsing =
DWT (Dead weight Tonnes) 0,7
B = breedte van het schip
hO = a + h i
A = zijaanzicht
Break Force.
Explanation symbols:
= load displacement =
DWT (Dead weight Tonnes) 0.7
B = breath of the vessel
hO = a + h i
-a = distance from summer load line to upperdeck
-hi = height of each tier of deckhouse having a breadth
greater than 0.25 B
A = area in profile
- hull and superstructures
- deckhouses with breadth greater than 0.25 B
All the Equipment Numbers have been laid down in a
table and are mentioned in the Requirements concerning Mooring, Anchoring and Towing of the IACS 2005;
they meet the guidelines as drawn up by the OCIMF.
The calculated Equipment Numbers vary from:
- 205 - 240 to - 14600 - 16000
depending on the size of the vessel.
To list all the numbers perhaps goes too far, but to offer you an indication we will give you part of the table
here.
In the table, it has been ascertained how heavy anchor,
studded anchor chains and hawsers need to be for the
calculated Equipment Number. In the table, MBF
stands for Minimum Break Force here.

6.4 Ankers
6.4 Anchors
kend anker nodig.
Power ankers (SHHP). Dit type wordt vooral in de offshore
en bij baggeractiviteiten toegepast.
A distinction is made in this respect between a Conventional Anchor and a so-called High Holding Power
Anchor (HHP). As regards anchors, the phrases flukes
and crown plate are commonly used. The flukes are basically the teeth or anchorings that sink into the bottom.
The crown plate makes sure that the flukes go into the
bottom, but at the same time prevents them from going
too deep. The holding force of a HHP anchor is twice
that of a conventional one. Because of this, it can be constructed about 25% lighter.
Anchor testing
The values that can be used for testing the holding force
of anchors are listed in a table. This table has been included in the afore mentioned Requirements Concerning Mooring, Anchoring and Towing. (table not
rendered). The HHP anchor is twice the size of a conventional anchor and has a much higher holding power.
The HHP is also the most commonly used type of anchor, but there are also anchors with even higher holding powers: the so-called Super High Holding Power
anchors (SHHP). This type of anchor is mainly used in
the offshore sector and for dredging activities.
Ankerkettingen
122

Anchor chains
Using the aforementioned Equipment Number, the dimensions of the chain links, the strength and the length
are also determined. Many anchor chains consist of links
with a stud in the middle, and are therefore also called
studded anchor chains. Anchors and anchor chains are

Winches
Anchor winches are used to guide
the anchor chains. The capstans are
often positioned on the foredeck of
the vessel. The heavy anchor winches
control the anchors. These winches
are often connected to the drums or
winches used to operate the hawsers
during mooring and unmooring.
They constitute an important piece
of equipment.
Drum / winch
The mooring line drum usually consists of two parts.
One part is meant for storage and the other is used to
haul in the line. The load is therefore on the latter part.
Verhaalkop
Winch head
Winch heads are used to reposition hawsers or shift vessel. With shifting, we mean the pulling across a short
distance along the quay.
Self tension winches
A self tension winch is a frequently used piece of equipment on container ships and highly efficient in the discharging of containers. Using it means the ship is fairly
stable, also during tidal movements. The holding force
value is set beforehand and if the winch works correctly
it will automatically correct for any fluctuations in the
water level.

belegd worden.
Ships bollards
Ships bollards on the deck of a vessel serve the purpose
of transferring the mooring loads to the ships hull. They
look different from the bollards on the quay. They often
have a mull pulley and eyes attached to them to which a
stopper can be fastened. During mooring, this stopper
temporarily absorbs the force of the hawser, after which
the hawsers are belayed on the ships bollard.
6.5 Trossen
6.5 Hawsers
Todays hawsers are hardly made of natural fibres anymore. Instead, synthetic materials or steel are often used.

Materiaal keuze
Choice of materials
Hawsers are made of steel, synthetic materials or rope.
Manila rope is the only natural fibre left that is still used
for hawsers, but this in fact also occurs highly sporadically. Rope is still often used for pilot ladders as the material remains rough and hairy and has a smaller tendency to slide.
125
Staaldraad
Staal is een prima materiaal voor een
meertros.
In
de brochure van Lankhorst staan de staal-
Steel wire
Steel is an excellent material for mooring hawsers. Steel hawsers are strong,
cheap, durable and they have little to no
elasticity. Disadvantages however are
that the material is heavy and subject
to rusting. To prevent this, steel hawsers are galvanised. In the brochure of
Lankhorst, the steel hawsers are listed
along with their properties.

Synthetic hawsers
Modern hawsers are made of synthetic
fibres won from petroleum products.
Synthetic hawsers can absorb high
tractive forces and are light in comparison to steel hawsers. A synthetic material such as high molecular polyethylene
and Aramide fibres (HPME) is highly
suitable for hawsers, but the material
however is very sensitive to the impact
of sunlight (UV resistance).
Synthetic hawsers can become too
warm due to friction in the hawser,
which can cause the strains to melt.
This may lead to a substantial reduction
in tractive force.

Hawser characteristics
When purchasing a hawser, the choice of material and
the accompanying strength obviously play a highly important role. Of course, different requirements apply to
the mooring lines of a large oil carrier than to those of
to a passenger or container vessel. As regards oil tankers,
the main focus is on strength, for container vessels speed
of handling and weight also play an important role. All
these characteristics are extensively described by the
hawser manufacturer.
We will now focus on a number of important definitions of characteristics from the brochure of Lankhorst.

The force is expressed in kN.
- weight

- Water absorption
: Percentage of the weight.
- Recoiling
: In the case of high elasticity, dangerous recoiling can occur in the case of

- Extension : indicates how much the line can
lengthen if it is subjected to longterm loads.
- Chemical resistance
: The degree to which chemical products impact the line.

Hawser loads
The construction of increasingly larger vessels also
means that hawser loads are hugely increasing. The synthetic materials of which such hawsers are made can be
so strong that they can handle hawser loads of up to two
hundred tonnes. Hawsers able to absorb such loads easily have a diameter of about 96 mm. This is quite a hawser. The breaking strain is 5x the workload (see fig 6.5).
From a technical point of view, a lot is possible nowa-
Rekkers
Extensions
One of the characteristics of a synthetic hawser is that it
has a much higher degree of elasticity than a steel hawser. Steel hawsers are still frequently used and wound
on winches. Steel hawsers have a low elasticity, meaning
tensions quickly mount when the ship moves. For this
reason, an extension is often attached to a steel hawser.
This is a synthetic hawser of roughly 11 metres long that
absorbs the loads.
This method is frequently used as it is often a cost-efficient solution and allows for optimum use to be made
of the properties of both materials. An extension also
prevents damages such as constriction from occurring.
An extension with a diameter of 56 mm costs about
200 to 300 and one with a diameter of 96 mm about
700.
The maximum allowable load of a bollard is roughly
55% of the breaking strain. Above this load, distortion
occurs. The maximum load can be set on self tension
winches and can be monitored.
