perfectly by the regeneration of Temescal.

Originally home to the Ohlone, the first

Spanish settlers arrived here in the late

In 1869, when the railroad arrived, Temescal

1897, however, thot Temescal village finally

allowed itself to be annexed by Oak.land.

By the 1920s. those Italian families, mostly

from the Genoa and Piedmonte areas,
were the mainstoy of the community in
Temescal, whilst one of the main draws
for outsiders wos Idora Park, which had

attractions ranging from opero ond dromotic theoter to roller coasters and skating.

Of course, time marches on and the face of

the Temescol Neighborhood has changed
immeosurably since those days. The neighborhood is novv host to o diverse group of
cultures, ond vvhot used to be the stables for
the streetcor horses is now o collection of
small, independent businesses; Idora Park,
razed in 1929, is now a residential area.

However. some things dont change all that

much. ln 1871, you could buy o beer and
some hearty food at Giuseppo Catteneo's
Brick House restaurant, located at 49th &
