ourwrongoutlookforlife,anddispellsourignoranceanddelusions.
ThusbhajagovindaMwasoriginallyknownasmohamudgAra,theremover
ofdelusions.
Shankaraexplains,naychides,usforspendingourtimeinuseless
trivialikeamassingwealth,lustingafter(wo)menandrequestsus
todiscriminateandcultivatetheknowledgetolearnthedifference
betweentherealandtheunrealToemphasisethat,heconcludesthat
allknowledgeotherthantheSelfKnowledgeisuseless,Shankaramakes
thepersonrealizehowfoolishhe/sheisintheconductandbehaviorby
theseverses,andshowsthepurposeofourworldlyexistence,whichis
toseekGovindaandattainHim.
BhajagovindaMisdividedintodvAdashamanjarikAstotramandchaturdasha
manjarikastotramAttheendofcomposingthefirststanza,itissaid
thatShankaraburstforthwiththenext11stanzasofbhajagovindam.
Thusstanzas112arecalleddvAdashmanjarikastotramInspiredby
theextemporerecitalbyShankara,eachofhis14disciplescomposed
averseandthe14versecompendiumiscalledchaturdashamanjarika
stotramShankaraaddedthefinishingtouchesbyaddingfiveofhis
ownstanzasatthelastbringingthetotalto31Thelasttwo

musicofBhajagovindaMisattractedtoitHowever,thesignificance

attainingsalvationShankara'swordsseemtobequitepiercingand
seemtolackthesoftnessandtendernessoftenfoundinhisothertexts,
thusaddressingdirectly.Thereasonisthatthiswasanextempore
recitaltoanoldmanHiswordscanbecomparedtoaknifeofa
doctorThedoctor'sknifecruelyremovesthetumorwithmuchpain,
butremovingthetumorultimatelyrestoresgoodhealthinthepatient.
SoisShankara'swords,whichpierceandpointoutourignorance.
Itisaknifeintotheheartofworldiness,andbyremovingthistumor
ofignorance,wecanattaineverlastingblisswiththegraceofGovinda.
