Department of Public Works
Dave Janzer punched the
time clock for the last time
Thursday as a full-time employee. Janzer retired after
driving thousands of miles
on formerly town and now
village roads during his
career as a highway laborer.
Its time to slow down a
bit, Janzer said Thursday
after village officials held an
appreciation luncheon for
him. His family and friends
attended as well as fellow
employees and village officials.
Village
Administrator
Jim Healy and Public Works
Supervisor Adam Schmitt
said Janzer was an excellent
employee whose skills and
knowledge will be missed.
Ive been head of the
department for about two
years, but the first person I
met on the job here was
Dave, Schmitt said. The
first thing he said was welcome and the very next
thing he said was that he
loved to plow snow.
Healy and Schmitt agreed
its rare in this day and age

25 years or more.
Todays generation really is trending toward not
staying with the same employer for as long, Schmitt
said. A lot of them are constantly watching for something better. It will never be
like that again.
Working for the village

and taking care of the villages roads and highways, a

highway laborer performs
many tasks such as resurfacing roads, cutting grass and
weeds and hauling materials
in a village truck, but the
task Janzer said he liked the
most, as he told Schmitt, is
plowing snow.

I love doing it, Janzer

said. Youre out there all
alone, no ones telling you
what to do and you really
have the time to think and
get things done.
Janzer said he remembers one snow storm around
2010 when his department

clear.
I worked about 16-18
hours straight, went home
for a couple of hours to rest
and then was back on the job
doing it all over again,
Janzer said. Then there
was another storm in the
1990s just after I started

working here where I

worked for 27 hours straight.
The snow just kept coming
and coming.
One thing Janzer didnt
like about snow plowing was
the behavior of some of the
motorists.
Theyll bring their vehicles right up to the rear of
the truck and stay there or
even pass you, Janzer said.
Its an accident waiting to
happen if you have to stop
the truck suddenly.
Janzer said he will miss
his fellow department workers and others who work for
the village.
Weve got a very good
crew here, Janzer said. Its
much easier to work with the
people Ive worked with. We
all got along and had fun
while we were doing our job.
Schmitt said Janzer is a
very genuine person.
He was always willing to
help any way he could and
share the knowledge hes
gathered during the more
than two decades hes been
here,Janzer said.
Janzer said his wife and
their four children are also
happy to see him retire.
Ive got plenty to do
around the house and outside, Janzer said while
laughing. Maybe my wife
wont be so happy to have me
around that much. Im just
kidding shes happy Ill be
around more.
Janzer said he might help
the department in the fall,
maybe help with some snow
plowing, but it wont be close
to putting in full-time hours.
Im 66 and I want to
spend more time doing other
things, Janzer said.
