ENGINE BLOCK:
ENGINE BLOCKS
ARE GENERALLY
MANUFACTURED
FROM CAST IRON
OR ALUMINIUM
ALLOY. CRANK
SHAFT ENGINE

CYLINDER HEAD,
SUMP AND OTHER
COMPONENTS
ARE FIXED ON
BLOCK.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM
Lubrication reduces
unwanted
t d friction,
f i ti
and
d
controls it where it is
useful. It reduces wear
on moving parts.
Clearances fill with oil so
that engine parts move
or float on layers of oil
instead of directly on
each
h other.

power is needed to
move them and thats a
plus.

It helps to cool the engine.

It collects heat from the
engine, then returns to the
sump, where it cools.
It helps to absorb shock
loads. A power stroke can
suddenly put as much as 2
tonnes force on main
bearings. Layers of oil
cushion this loading.

Oil is also a cleaning agent.

and carbon and carries
them back to the sump.
Larger pieces fall to the
bottom.

OIL PUMP:
Oil pumps may be driven from
the camshaft or the crankshaft.
crankshaft
In a rotor-type oil pump, an
inner rotor drives an outer one.
As they turn
turn, the volume
between them increases. This
larger volume lowers the
pressure at the pump inlet.
Outside atmospheric pressure
is then higher. This forces oil
into the pump, and it fills the
spaces between the rotor
lobes.

OIL FILTER:
The oil filter helps to
clean the oil in the
system. If the filter
clogs a valve opens
clogs,
and directs
unfiltered oil to the
engine. Most oilfilters on diesel
engines are larger
than those on similar
gasoline
li engines.

FUEL SYSTEM
Function of the fuel system is
to store and supply fuel to the
cylinder chamber where it
can be mixed with air,
vaporized, and burned to
produce energy. The fuel,
which can be either gasoline
or diesel is stored in a fuel
tank. A fuel pump draws the
fuel from the tank through
fuel lines and delivers it
through a fuel
f
f
filter
to either a
carburetor or fuel injector,
then delivered to the cylinder
chamber for combustion.

CARBURETOR
A carburetor is basically
a device
d i ffor mixing

and fuel in the correct
amounts for efficient
combustion. The
carburetor bolts to the
engine intake manifold
manifold.
The air cleaner fits over
the top of the carburetor
