VELOCITY

DISPLACEMENT

HOW TO CALCULATE DISPLACEMENT

YOU WILL NEED:

A PAPER PAD
SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR

DISPLACEMENT IS A MOVEMENT OF ACTUAL CHANGE IN

PLACE OR POSITION TO GROUND DIRECTION.

LETS START!
NUMBER 1
A BUS TRAVELS 35KM AND TURNS EAST 50KM. WHAT IS
THE DISPLACEMENT OF A BUS?
SOLUTION
d=

)+(

= (35km)2 + (50km)2
=(1,225

km 2

= 3,725

km 2

)+ (2,500

km 2

d= 61.10km
THE ANSWER IS 61.10KM

HOW?
Resultant displacement problems will specify how many
"feet" or how many "meters" an object has traveled. You
will use these units of measurement to calculate
displacement, or how far out of position the object is
based on its original point.
The resultant displacement formula is written as: d =
d1

d2

. "d" stands for displacement.

d1

direction that the object is traveling and

is the first
d

is the second

direction that the object is traveling.

An object can only travel in two directions maximum,
since moving along the north/south or east/west axes will
be considered neutral movement.

Now that you know the two directions your object is

traveling in, input the values into their respective
variables.
For example,

d1

= 300 and

d2

= 400. Your formula

should look like this: d = 300 + 400.

Square 300 and 400 first, then add them, and then find
the square root of that sum.
For example: d = 90000 + 160000. d = 250000. d =
500. You now know that displacement is equal to 500
feet.

HERES ANOTHER QUESTION

A MITSUBISHI MONTERO GOES SOUTHWARD THEN TURNS

WESTWARD AFTER TRAVELLING LATE 25 MINUTES A
DISTANCE OF 15KM. 21 STOPPED AT THE POINT 10.5KM
FROM WHERE HE TURNS?

SOLUTION:
d= (

)+(

= (15km)2 + (10.5km)2
= (225

km 2

= 335.25

) + (110.25

km 2

km 2

d= 18.30KM

THE ANSWER IS 18.30KM

SO NOW DO YOU KNOW HOW?

VELOCITY
VELOCITY IS THE RATE OF MOTION OF A BODY WITH
REFERENCE TO THE DIRECTION.
VELOCITY=

displacement
time

, V=

d
t

LETS START
A MAN WALKED 32.5KM SOUTHWARD AND 78M
WESTWARD. IF IT TOOK HIM 30MIN TO REACH HIS
DESTINATION.

SOLUTION:

d=
=

(32.5m)2 + (78m)2

1056.25

m2

+ 6084

m2

V=

7140.25

84.5 m
30 min

V= 2.82m/min
THE ANSWER IS 2.82m/min
HOW?
Velocity is figured when you take the displacement of an
object, with its direction divided by a change in time. It
requires a direction. For this reason, an object that
returns to its original position does not have a velocity.
To find average velocity, you will write
Velocity=Displacement/Time. It may also be written
"v=d/t."
Keep in mind that all of the variables in this formula are
written with a right hand arrow above the letter to
indicate a change in that variable, rather than a constant.
For example, if a bike goes 50 miles (80 km) to the west,
this is the displacement measurement.
For example, it took our biker 4 hours to ride 50 miles (80
km) to the west.
For example, Velocity=50m west/4 hours. In this problem,
the average velocity of the biker is 12.5 mph (20.1 km/h)
to the west.
If you know the initial velocity and the final velocity, you
can calculate average velocity in another manner. Add

them together and divide by 2 to get the average

velocity.
