IMMIGRATIONINTERVIEW

YanniisGreek,hewasborninGreecearoundthe1950s.Whileinhisthirtieshedecidedto
permanentlymovetotheUnitedStatesinthe1980s.HehadpreviouslybeentotheU.Swhen
hegotmarriedtohiswifeHarriet.TheybothwantedtohaveasmallweddingintheU.Sandnot
aBigFatGreekstylewedding.AlthoughhemethiswifeHarrietinGreece,shewasinfacta
U.Scitizen.WhileintheU.ShealsofiledforaSocialSecuritycard.Aftergettingmarriedinthe
U.SthecouplereturnedtoGreeceforawhile.Afterafewmoreyearsofstrugglingandwishing
formoreopportunities,andalittleadventure,thecoupledecidedtheywantedtomaketheU.S
theirhomepermanently.

AsManning&Baruth(2009)explainTheGreekeconomyfailedtoshowsignsofimprovement
(pg.145)causingYanniandHarriettoseekopportunitiesintheU.S.Howeverbeforeleaving
Greece,YannireceivedaletterfromtheU.Ssayinghewaseligibletoobtaincitizenship.After
hegothisletter,hetraveledtoAthenstotheU.Sembassy,inordertofilecitizenshippapers.
Yannidescribestheprocessasprettysimple,almostlikegoingtotheDMVandgettinga
license.HesaidhehadtoreadabooklettogooverAmericanHistory,Governmentstructures,
Congress,etc.TherewasalowfeeassociatedwiththetestandEnglishandSpanishversions
availableaswellasGreek.HetooktheEnglishversionsincehewasfluentinEnglishalready.

YanniandHarrietmadetheirmovepermanentonJanuary1st,1980.TheyarrivedinNewYork
andsettledinManhattan.Yanniwasalreadyexperiencedasahotelconcierge,workingatthe
HiltoninGreece.HetransferredtotheHiltoninNewYork.AlthoughthecouplemarriedinLas
Vegasandhadbeentothiscountrybefore,thiswasthefirsttimeinNewYork.Yannidescribes
NewYorkasmulticultural,multiethnic,fastpaced,withamagnitudesohugeitisunmatched
anywhereintheworld.HewasinaweofNewYorkandlovedit.Although15%ofEuropeans

settledintheNorthEastpartofthecountryuponarrival,about35%endofsettlingintheWest
(Manning&Baruth,2009,p.146).AlthoughYannididliveinNewYorkforseveralyearshe
relocatedtoLasVegaseventually.YanniflourishedinNewYorkatseveralhotelsbesidesthe
Hilton.Yanniwasaveryambitiousandadventurousyoungman,takingineverythingthis
countryhadtooffer,whilealsostayingtruetohisvalues.ValuesmanyEuropeansholdsuchas
individualpersonalachievement,independence,andcontroloveronesenvironment(Manning
&Baruth,2009,p147).

AlthoughYannilovesAmerica,therewillalwaysbeaplaceinhisheartforhishomecountry.
Yannidescribeshiscountryasbeautiful,surroundedbywater,fourseasonseveryyear,and
muchmuchsmallerthanNewYork..Greecehasanislandlifestyle,withasmalltouristelement
aswell.Boatseverywherethatareusedfortransportation.Also,plentyofCulturesuchas
history,buildings,music,andfood.YannidescribesGreeceaspeacefulandslowerpaced.
Yannihintsatthefactthatalthoughheloveshiscountry,heneededmore.Greeksarevery
proudindividuals,aswellasambitiousandhardworking(Manning&Baruth,2009,p148).
AlthoughGreeksareproudhardworkingpeopletheyarealsoveryfrugalwiththeirmoney,
carefulsavers,andusefinancialresourceswisely(Manning&Baruth,2009,p.148).

YanniandhiswifehavenowlivedintheU.Sforoverthirtyyearsnow.Theyraisedtwochildren,
andhaveseveralgrandchildren.TheyhavelivedinLasVegasforovertenyearsandresidein
theCentennialarea.TheybothspeakfluentEnglishbuthaveaGreekaccent.Theyalsohavea
lotofloveforhonorandthefamily(Manning&Baruth,2009,p.148).Theyarevibrant,
vivacious,andhighlyintelligentpeoplewhoareclassicexamplesofEuropeanimmigrantswho
madesomethingofthemselvesintheUnitedStates.
