Experience Descriptions for Kathleen Jones

Integrative Family Medicine

At this private clinic, I worked under supervision as a nutritionist performing one-on-one
consultations. During the course of my experience there, I assessed patients diets, lifestyle, and
health histories, reviewed laboratory results, and performed anthropometric evaluations. The
consultations focused on acknowledging Clients strengths, setting goals, and providing
education and dietary interventions. Evaluation and monitoring during subsequent visits allowed
for nutrition plans to evolve to continue to meet the needs of the Clients. Working at this location
demanded understanding of nutrient, supplement, and drug interactions, behavioral optimization
techniques in the counseling relationship context, experience with working with patients who
have disordered eating, and ethical practices in a medical facility.
VA Medical Center
During my time at the VA, I led workshops and classes for the consumers focusing on
nutrition as it pertains to the population of veterans. Participants were assessed in regards to
diet, lifestyle, and population factors, in order to choose topics that were most pertinent to them.
General nutrition interventions were encouraged and progress was evaluated and monitored.
Working with this unique population allowed for familiarization with various cultural and ethical
issues unique to this population such as individuals with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury.
Unity Community Healthcare
My experience at Unity consisted of conducting community nutrition education for the
consumers which included both families with young children and senior citizens. The population,
which consisted of mostly low income participants of diverse ethnic backgrounds, was under
constant assessment and the topics were continually tailored to meet the evolving needs of the
participants. Classes and workshops focused on nutrition interventions and progress was
monitored weekly with interventions being evaluated for their success and adjusted as the
consumers health and education evolved. Working with such a diverse group of consumers
allowed for furthering my experience and knowledge of working with people of different cultures
with various cultural mores impacting the way they interacted with food.
Holistic Primary Care
I worked as a contributing writer with articles based off of assessing the latest research on
emerging topics in nutrition, which included reviewing scholarly articles on the epidemiology and
biostatistics relevant to the material. The subjects explored in the articles included: Diets
Impact on the Age of Puberty, and How Preconception, Prenatal, and Postnatal Maternal
Nutrition Affects Fetal Development.
