Franois Campions Guitar Music:

listing, concordance and & statistics

Franois Campion published 70 guitar pieces in a book entitled Nouvelles Dcouvertes sur la Guitarre, (Paris, 1705). During the following years, he added manuscript pieces
in a copy that he intended to present to the kings library, after his death that occurred in 1748. This unique copy now bears the reference Vm7 6221 in Bibliothque
Nationale de France.
This table offers an overall view of his guitar works, and helps in precisely locating or choosing a piece or a type of piece.
To establish the key of the pieces using an accord nouveau, I have taken the third course, G, as the basis for tuning the other strings - according to Campions indications.
It gives the following results, from the 5th to the 1st course:

Accord nouveau [1] p. 1: Bb - D - G - C - F

Accord nouveau [2] p. 25: B - D - G - C - F#
Accord nouveau [3] p. 27: Bb - C - G - C - Eb
Accord nouveau [4] p. 32: B - C - G - C - E
Accord nouveau [5] p. 34: B - D - G - C# - F#
Accord nouveau [6] p.35: C - D - G - C - F
Accord nouveau [7] p.36: B - D - G - D - G

It seems obvious that some of these tunings are not possible without changing the gauge of a few strings. But
they can be transposed in order to avoid such an operation. As an example, Robert de Vise already used the
Accord nouveau [7] in his Livre de Guittarre (1682), with almost the same tuning indications given by Campion. But
I recently discovered that, although based on the 3rd course, the result was a minor third lower:

Franois Campion gave no instructions about the presence of bourdons on the 4th and 5th courses. A study of

Additions from Franois Campions hand to the1705 edition appear in brackets. If in square brackets, indications come from my hand. Random use of capitals is
original. White zones isolate the manuscript pieces. In Table 1, the ochre lines separate each accord nouveau from the next one.
Piece numbers do not appear in the original work: here they are intended to compare the two sources and count the pieces.
The last column refers to the concordances existing in Murzias Cifras Selectas (1722) - as indicated by Monica Hall - and in Passacalles y Obras (1732) - as drawn up by
Craig H. Russell. These 29 versions appear in italian tablature, in standard tuning, and are very often modified by the Spanish guitarist.
The contents of Table 2 is identical, but the pieces are listed in alphabetical order, with a statistic summary for each type of piece.
