Problem sheet 3 (ELECTROMAGNETISM)

1. A mild steel ring has a mean diameter of 20 cm and cross sectional area of 400 mm 2. Calculate the (a)
reluctance of the ring and (b) mmf to produce a flux of 500 Wb. Assume the relative permeability of mild
steel to be 1000.
[Ans: (a) 1.25x106 AT/Wb (b) 625 AT ]
2. A steel magnetic circuit has a uniform cross-sectional area of 4 cm 2 and a length of 50 cm. A coil of 250
turns is wound uniformly over the magnetic circuit. When the current in the coil is 1.5 A, the total flux is
0.25 mWb. Calculate the (a) magnetic field strength and (b) relative permeability of steel.
[Ans: (a) 750 AT/m (b) Relative permeability = 663]
3. An iron ring of mean length 30 cm has an air gap of 2 mm and a
winding of 200 turns. If the permeability of the iron core is 300
a current of 1 A flows through the coil, find the flux density.
[Ans: 83.77 mWb/m2]

4. A steel ring, 20 cm mean diameter and circular cross section of

diameter 2.5 cm, has an air gap of 1 mm. The ring is uniformly
wound with 500 turns of copper wire carrying a current of 3 A. Calculate the (a) MMF, (b) magnetic flux,
(c) flux density, and (d) reluctance for the steel ring and also the air gap. Neglect magnetic leakage and
fringing. Assume that the steel ring takes 30% of the total MMF.
[Ans:

For air gap (a) 1050 AT (b) 6.48x10-4 AT/Wb (c) 1.32 Wb/m2 (d) 6.48x106 AT/Wb]

made of two semi-circular sections of cast iron and cast steel
respectively with each joint having reluctance equal to air gap of 0.2 mm
as shown in the figure. Determine the ampere turns required to produce a
flux of 0.8 mWb. The relative permeabilities of cast iron and cast steel
