Practice Problems - Answers

1. Describe in your own words:

Operating a transistor in saturation region

A transistor is in saturation when the bias voltage is increased to such a point
that any further increase in bias voltage will not cause any further increase
in current through the transistor.

Operating a transistor in Cutoff region?

A transistor is in cutoff when the bias voltage is reduced to a point that it
stops current in the transistor

Operating a transistor in the Active region

A transistor is in action region when its base-emitter junction is forward
biased (emitter diode is ON) and the base-collector junction is reverse biased
(collector diode is OFF). Also IC does not change widely as VCE increases or
decreases in a wide range.

2. Fill in the blank with some approx values. You need to research these values in different
areas.

2. Convert the following amplifier gains (either power, voltage, or current ratios) into gains
expressed in the unit of decibels (db).
[a] AI = 24.5:
[b] AP = 87;
[c] AV = 115;

AI(db) = 27.78
AP(db) = 19.40
AV(db) = _41.21

3. Calculate the approximate amount of the current this current mirror circuit will try to
maintain through Rload , assuming Q1 and Q2 are silicon transistors. Also calculate the
approximate power dissipation of transistor Q2 .
Given: R1 = 2.2 K, Rload = 1.5 K and Vs = 15 V
15V 0.7V
= 6.5 mA
2.2 K
VCE = 15 1.5K(6.5 mA) = 5.25V
PQ2 = 5.25 V (6.5mA) = 34.125 mW

4. Calculate the approx output voltage of this regulated power supply circuit and the
amount of current through the zener diode under no-load condition.
Vout = -6.4 +0.7 V = -5.7 V
V3.3K = [35 x 1.414 2(0.7)] 6.4 VDC = 41.70 VDC
IZ = I3.3K = 41.7VDC 3.3K = 12.64 mA
