BROCHURE
Description:

A two-sided (duplex) folding brochure

Date:
July 10, 2016

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Visual Media
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images. One clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

I set up my fold in Adobe InDesign. I used my color scheme throughout my design as a way to create repetition and to unify the body copy
with the images. For the image of the the two caterers I used the lasso tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I then
placed the caterers into InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha channel of the image. I created the logo
in Illustrator using the pencil tool for the chefs hat and then I placed it into InDesign. I placed the logo onto the front and back of the brochure
so that there would be no question who the company was.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word, Scanner

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

Scan and import a high-quality image.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:

I scanned my image onto my computer using my home scanner. I then cropped the image in Microsoft Word to get rid of some ripped edges. I
added a filter onto the image (from Microsoft Word) to give it more brightness. I created a large rectangle shape to use as my background and
gave it a central gradient so that the eye would move to the image. I used the color dropping tool to take the color from the middle womans
dress and use it as the background. I used the shape tool to create three rectangles, and used the dropper (on the right womans dress) to
give them a light pink color. I used these rectangles to create repetition throughout my ad.

Objectives:

Process:

This entire project was done using Adobe Illustrator. I first started by drafting different design ideas for a blog with a pencil and paper. Then
I took those ideas and created them in Illustrator. After coming up with three different options, called for a vote on Facebook to see what
was everyones favorite option. After doing such, I decided on this option above to refine. I created the circle shape by using the pen tool to
make a curved line. Then I used a circle shape and used the type tool to type a path on it with my body copy font. I placed the focal point word
Tolman in the middle of the circles so that it would catch the eyes attention.

ta

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience.
Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Refine one logo with variations for color

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above
center on a vertical page.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.

Process:

I created the logo using simple shapes of ellipses and rounded rectangles in Adobe Illustrator. For my letterhead, I put the logo in the top
corner. I made it high enough so that there would be enough room for the margins and also enough room for the letter to be written. I placed
a line created with yellow circles all the way across the top and bottom of my page. I then put the name of the cake designer on the top of the
line. The rest of her contact information was located just below the name in a smaller and different font. I also added the cake logo (without
the words) as a watermark. I kept the opacity to about 5%.

Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.

Process:

I created the logo using simple shapes of ellipses and rounded rectangles in Adobe Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create a squiggled line
for the frosting. I also used the pathfinder tool to cut and combine these simple shapes. I then opened a new InDesign document and placed my
logo. I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card. I then copied/pasted the logo and contact information
onto this page. I kept the logo and contact information about the same size as the information on the letterhead. I also brought the dotted line
into the business card with a different color to help unify the stationery pieces.

WEB PAGE

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Visual Media

Program(s)/Tools:
Notepad++, HTML, CSS

Objectives:

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Knowledge of HTML and CSS.

Process:

I created this web page using only NotePad++. I had never seen or written any HTML/CSS before. It was interesting to see how you could make
a web page by only using a simple text editor. After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document
to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to be Cookies and Milk and Georgia. Tahoma became a backup for my Cookies and Milk font because
it isnt web safe on most computers. This was an interesting project for me to complete. Especially as I had to do a lot of independent study on
how to create certain effects.

MONTAGE
Description:
This project was a spiritual montage created by blending two or more images and using tasteful typography.

Date:
May 28, 2016

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Visual Media
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks

Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images

Process:

I first inserted the picture of the Rexburg temple and sized it to 8.5x11. I then used the leveling tool to get the colors how I wanted them. I
then used my lasso tool to grab the image of a womans eye (with feathering levels up so that I wouldnt have a hard edge) and inserted it onto
the temple image. I then blended the image of the womans eye into the temple image by using the masking and brush tools. I then inserted a
stucco texture image onto the entire picture that I had so far, and used the masking and brush tools to increase its opacity and make it more
see through. Then I added the filter Dust and Scratches from the filter options. I then added font by creating a text box. I increased the font
size and used a different font for the words that were most important out of the message.

Space is limited.

To start my project, I began with creating sketches of possible designs I could implement. Once I picked what design I wanted to go for, I began
to create an outline of that design in Adobe InDesign. I began by creating a large black box at the top of the page to create a focal point. Within
that point, I used two different fonts in my title in order to create contrast and a stronger focal point. I used gray rectangles throughout the
flier to create repetition. I kept my body copy small and gave enough white space so that nothing felt trapped in the page. I was given the
image, logo, and content for this flier.

PHOTODESIGN
Description:
This project demonstrated using photography and photo editing skills.

Date:
May 17, 2016

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Visual Media

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5x11 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process:

I first began by taking an picture of two dandelions. I used the rule of thirds to take this picture. I also used the focus option to blur the
background and focus on the dandelion. I started by using the color scheme of monochromatic green. By using the layering option, I placed in
these colors. I also inserted a quote by using two separate fonts to create contrast.
