DAY OF JOY!

FEDERAL ELECTION
By SEAN McCOMISH

THE federal Coalition has

promised to deliver the nal
$10 million for a south-west
integrated cancer care centre
if it wins the election.
Elated Peters Project
supporters spent yesterday
afternoon celebrating the
milestone announcement
after more than three years
of relentlessly knocking on
Canberras door.
Speaking at the Lighthouse
Theatre yesterday, opposition

health spokesman Peter

Dutton promised the money
would be delivered over the
two-year period.
If a Coalition government
is elected at the upcoming
federal election it will be
the intention of Tony Abbott
as prime minister and me as
health minister to deliver $10
million to this project, he
said.
It is an amazing project
built on difcult circumstances for a lot of people but
it is going to make an amazing
difference in the future.

TARGET $5M
The election promise was
timed just days after Wannon
Liberal MP Dan Tehan
launched his re-election
campaign.
Asked if other projects had
been scrapped or sidelined
to deliver the funds to the
south-west, Mr Dutton said

the gures were within the

$64 billion federal health
budget
Weve gone through the
gures meticulously and
Im convinced. That money
will be ready to go when
the project is ready to
commence.

Australian voters will

now effectively decide if
the cancer centre receives
$10 million but Dan Tehans
efforts to get his own party
on side will likely cement his
chances at the September 7
poll.
The election promise is a
blow to Labor as it tries to
win the blue ribbon Liberal
seat of Wannon after federal Health Minister Tanya
Plibersek declined to fund
the centre earlier this year.

overwhelmed by the news,

which has come only months
after the state government
also promised $15 million
for the centre.
Weve got to wait for the
September election to come
and go but its a great condence boost, Ms Jellie said.
I had a cry, a laugh. Its
been exciting for Dan to be
able to deliver that to us.
Dan Tehan has been a
long-time supporter of the
cause, promoting it around
the wider electorate and even
as far as South Australia.
