Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry .It was formed out of four exclaves of former French
India namely Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe. It is named after the largest district
Puducherry. Puducherry lies in the southern part of the Indian Peninsula. The areas of Puducherry
and Karaikal are bound by the state ofTamil Nadu, Yanam and Mayyazhi (Mahe) are enclosed by
the states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala respectively. Puducherry is the 29th most populous and
the third most densely populated state/UT in India. It has a GDP of 0.21 lakh crore (US$3.1
billion) and ranks 27th in India

SC stays Centres notification lifting ban on Jallikattu
Supreme Court stayed the Centres notification lifting ban on controversial bull taming sport
Jallikattu during the festival of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

The Centres notification lifting ban on Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu was challenged in the
Supreme Court by AWBI, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and a
Bangalore-based NGO.

Cabinet approbated 50000 crore rupees for Infrastructure Projects in TN


Centre has consented Rs. 50,000 crore for infrastructure development projects in Tamil Nadu.

The announcement has been made by Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and
Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari during the foundation laying ceremony of 3 four-lane
National Highways projects in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tirupur districts and 2
flyovers in Marthandam and Parvathipuram.

2015 Sangita Kalanidhi Award Bestowed upon Sanjay Subrahmanyam


Veteran South Indian classical vocalists Sanjay Subrahmanyam has been conferred with the
2015 Sangita Kalanidhi award.

It was presented by the mathematician Manjul Bhargava at 89th annual conference of


the Madras Music Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

With this, Subrahmanyam became seventh artist to be conferred with this award before
completing 50 years of age including Ariyakudi Iyengar, Musiri Subramania Iyer,Maharajapuram
Viswanatha Iyer, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, GN Balasubramaniam, ML Vasanthakumari and M
Balamuralikrishna.

Thakkar selected for 2016 S&T achievement Award


An Indian origin person Cottalango Leon hailing from Coimbatore has been selected for the
2016 Technical Achievement Award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Leon was conferred with this award to recognize his design, engineering and continuous
development of Sony Pictures Imageworks Itview. It is a tool used only within Sony
Imageworks.

Another Indian origin person, Rahul Thakkar was awarded for the groundbreakingdesign
of DreamWorks Animation Media Review System. He is a computer engineer graduate
from Mumbai University and currently the Vice-President at Brivo Systems.

Tamil Nadu Chief J Jayalalithaa launched a round-the-clock call centre for ensuring fast
response to grievances.
Aim: Ensuring quick response to peoples grievances wherein they can dial toll-free number
1100 at any point of time in the day.
Puducherry Lt Governor AK Singh launches MITRA app
MITRA (Mobile Initiated Tracking and Rescue application), a mobile application has been
launched by Puducherry Lt Governor AK Singh to ensure safety and security of women,
children and the elderly during emergency.

The MITRA is a smart phone based app that provides the facility to contact the police for
immediate help in emergency.

No internet connectivity is require and presently it is available only in smart phones

MITRA app has been developed by Puducherry Police department in association with
National Informatics Centre.

Sahayog Kaijin 2016: India and Japan joint Coast Guard exercise
The 15th edition of bilateral exercise between India and Japan titled Sahayog-Kaijin
2016has begun off the coast of Chennai, Tamil Nadu in the Bay of Bengal.

The focus of bilateral training would be Anti-piracy procedures, search and rescue
operations and interoperability between the two forces and other areas of common
professional interest.

Stan Wawrinka wins 2016 Chennai Open title


World No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland has won the 2016 Chennai Open title of
tennis. In the summit clash at Nungambakkam tennis stadium in Chennai, he defeated the Borna
Coric (World No. 33) of Croatia by 6-3, 7-5 score.

This was his third consecutive ATP Chennai Open title for Wawrinka (won in 2014, 2015
and 2016) and overall fourth, first won it in 2011.

With this win, Wawrinka pocketed US $ 75,700 and won 250 ranking points.

Tamil Nadu to set up 800MW supercritical coal-based power plant
Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha laying the foundation stone for the states first 800-MW
supercritical coal-based power plant. which will come up at Athipattu in Tiruvallur
district over 250 acres of land.
About the project :

This is the first time in Tamil Nadu that a 800-MW unit is being established under the
supercritical technology.

The project will be completed in August 2019 and 19.2 million units of power a day
will be generated

Indias first fully solar-powered educational institute now in Puducherry


Indias first fully solar-powered educational institute had been launched by Sri Aurobindo
International Centre for Education Puducherry.

The institutes produce three times of the electricity it consumes through solar power
plants.

The institute saves Rs 10,000 every month on the electricity bill.

The solar plant system is installed on the roofs of the dining room, primary school,
library and high school of the campus.

The institute has been self-sufficient in energy since September 2014.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa unveils new projects worth Rs 1,002.02 crore
J Jayalalithaa Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had inaugurated a series of projects worth Rs
1,002.02 crore which are taken up by Highways and Minor Ports Department.

The project includes construction of new bridges, railway over bridges and
buildings.

Foundation stone for construction of five bridges and five railways over bridges had
been laid down.The project will help the local people and the other connected states

Tamilnadu And West Bengal To Invest 150crores In Waste Management


Solid waste management is a project under the Swachh Bharat mission. It has been found that
the Indian cities generate about 170 million tonnes of solid waste every year.

The government has allocated 37000 crores of 62,009 crores for solid waste
management. Now according to sources from urban ministry, Tamil Nadu and West
Bengal have used around 150 crores in this regard.

West Bengal - West Bengal govt has utilized 92 crores to set up 200 compactors across the
state for waste management
Mahamaham Celebration ends with Theerthavari in Tamilnadu
Mahamaham which is a Hindu religious festival celebrated in Kumbakonam once in twelve
years during the full moon of Tamil month Maasi (Feb-March).It ends on Feb 22 this year with
the last day grand eve being the Holydip.Auspicious time of Holy dip is between 12 noon and 1
PM.

Mahamaham also known as Kumba-mela is a ten day festival celebrated by Hindus


once in 12 years

This year the eve began on Feb 13 and ended on Feb 22 with last day being more
special known as the Theerthavari or Holy dip

Around 10 lakh devotees from various parts of the country were gathered to take a Holy
dip in the tank which contains water from 20 Holy Springs.

Last Kumbamela took place on March 6, 2004

IIT Madras partners with Nokia for enhanced broadband connectivity


IIT Madras had partnered with Nokia to enhance broadband connectivity in rural India by
enabling the government vision Digital India.

Nokia will provide technological expertise and funning for research at IIT-Madras
Center of Excellence for Wireless Technology (CEWiT).

The Aim of the technology solution is to control unlicensed spectrum and to enhance
broadband connectivity in rural India.

Tamilian movie Kanavu Variyam to get Remi Award at WorldFest


Kanavu Variyam, a Tamil movie directed by a Chennai based techie Arun Chidambaram has
been selected for the prestigious Remi Award in the US.

The award will be presented to Arun Chidambaram during the 49th WorldFest Houston
International Film Festival, which will be held from April 8-17, 2016.

The film deals with the power cuts and shortage of electricity in the Indian villages.

The movie is produced by A. Chidambaram and Karthik Chidambaram in the banner of


DCKAP Cinemas.

Jayalalithaa announces Amma Kudineer Thittam


Jayalalithaa the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had announced Amma Kudineer Thittam a
new scheme for supplying drinking water.

Under the Scheme the govt will supply the water to those who cannot afford to
buy purified drinking water from private players.

Under the first phase of the scheme water supplying points will be established.

Tamil Nadu government had announced free bus travel for senior citizens in Chennai
metropolitan areas.

To gain the benefits of the scheme person has to fill an application form and submit it to
transport authorities for the tokens.

Free bus passes will be provided to the senior citizens

Ten tokens are given to the person for a month.

31 species of birds spotted at Otteri Lake


The Department of forest and Animal Keepers at Arignar Anna Zoological Park has carried out
long day census of birds and came to the conclusion that 31 species of birds in Vandalurs Otteri
Lake.

This census will focus on the no of new species of birds had arrived and increase in their
number in comparison to previous year.

The Lake sprawling area of 16 acres and protected by 635m long wall, It has storage
capacity of 8.5 crore liters.

The lake is filled with water and around 31 species of 7256 birds were found during the
survey, and species includes spotbill duck , Spoonbill, dabchick, night heron, Indian Cormorant,
Little egret
Pietro Fittipaldi wins 2015 MRF Challenge Formula 2000
Pietro Fittipaldi Brazil racing driver has won the 2015 MRF Challenge Formula 2000 by
winning two of the four races.

The racing was held in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu at Madras Motor Racing Track.

He wins the game with 244 points by attaining top position among the other
participants.

The 17-year old Pietro Fittipaldi is the grandson of former Formula One World champion
Emerson Fittipaldi.

Famous Tamil Comedy Actor Kumarimuthu Passed Away


Legendary Actor comedian Kumarimuthu died at private hospital in Chennai.He was 77.He is
known for his comic laugh.

He was passed away due to some age related ailments, His debut film was Nandu in 1981,
he acted in nearly 50 films spanning over three decades.

He was also part of the Political Party Drivida MunnetraKazhagam.

Chennai gets first smart self cleaning toilets in India
In a move to ensure public sanitation and to promote the use of public toilets, 183Automatic
self cleaning smart toilets have been installed in Chennai. They are known as e-toilets as they
could be located by people using a smart phone and authorities can control their function using
smartphone.

They are designed by Eram scientific solution who have provided 1600 such e-toilets
in 16 Indian states to various private organizations

Each toilet cleans itself with 5 litres of water after 3 min usage and 4.5 litres if
usage period is longer

43 toilets are specially for women with a sanitary napkin generator and an
incinerator

Each toilet costs around 4,50,000

Germany to develop Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Coimbatore as Smart Cities


Germany will partner with Indias flagship program Smart City Mission to develop
Bhubaneswar, Kochi, and Coimbatore as smart Cities.

The three Cities are among the twenty cities which have been announced by
the Urban Development Ministry.

Germany helped India in the selection process of the cities consists of three delegations
from Germany , Two of them from Urban Development Ministry and One from Ministry
of Housing and Poverty Alleviation.

P.Susheela enters into Guiness book of Records


The famous playback singer P.Susheela enters into the Guiness world book of records for
singing highest number of songs .
Points about achievement

She holds title for the highest number of solo, duet and chorus backed songs in
over
six Indian languages

As per the official records, she has sung 17,695 solo, duet and chorus backed songs
as on January 28, 2016

Susheela has over 30,000 songs to her credit across multiple languages

She has sung 20000 songs in Telugu and around 10000 songs in other languages

She has sung an exceptional 1,336 duets with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam which is a


record of maximum duets by the same duo

Agasthyamala the biosphere reserve shared by Kerala and Tamil Nadu has been placed in
the new 20 Biosphere reserves list released by UNESCO.

Rajnath Singh chairs High Level Committee meeting for Central assistance to Karnataka,
Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh affected by drought and floods
Union Home Minister chairs High Level Committee meeting for Central assistance to Karnataka,
Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh affected by drought and floods.

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting attended by various portfolio
of Ministers of the High Level Committee (HLC) has granted a Central Assistance of Rs
842.7 crore to Karnataka, Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh affected
by drought and floods.

The proposals from the Union government is based on the report of the Central Team
which visited Karnataka, affected by drought, and Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh
affected by floods.

The committee approved the assistance Karnataka will get the tune of Rs 723.23crore
while Rs 35.14 crore for Puducherry and Rs 84.33 crore for Arunachal Pradesh.

Vasu to be new TNCA Academy director


Vasu will be appointed as the new director of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA)
Academy for a period of two years.

Vasu has been the chairman of the selection panel in the TNCA at the various age-group
levels from under-13, to u-19 and u-23.

Father of Madras Atomic Power Station M.H.P.Rao passes away


The architect of Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS), Myneni Hari Prasad Rao aka MHP
Rao passed away due to old age ailments. He was 88..

He was specially appointed by the then Nuclear Power Board to administer the
construction and commissioning of the MAP.

He had also served as a member of Southern, Western and Northern Indian


Regional electricity boards.

In 1984 he was awarded with Padma Shri.

In 1983 he was conferred with the Sanjay Gandhi Award for contribution in Science
and Technology.
