Weve come over all nautical this issue.

Whether youre lucky enough to live by
the sea or you just want to give your home
a touch of beach chic, this issue is packed
full of ideas. I fall into the latter camp,
but I cant wait for school to be out for the
summer so that we can head off for day
trips to the seaside. Until then, I have to be content
with pouring over the pictures of our reader homes, from a chic holiday
bolthole in Devon (p24) to a bungalow on the Dorset coast that has been
remodelled to suit the way the owners live (p52). Weve also got advice
from our gardening expert on coastal plants that thrive in this harsh
environment (p60), plus eight pages of seaside-inspired decorating (p70)
and a look at how the experts interpret nautical style with the restoration
of a Victorian townhouse in St Ives (p78).

5 minutes with...
Helen Round, creator of unique hand-printed
textile designs inspired by nature and the sea
How did you
get into what
you do? My
background is
in textiles and
printmaking.
After my two
children started
school, I returned
to work as a
teacher, but after
10 years I decided
to rechannel my creative energies
and start my own business.

Have you always been interested

in making and designing? Thanks
to my mum, I learned to use a
sewing machine at a young age. As
children, my brother and I would
sit at the kitchen table with a pot
of glue, fabric scraps, the sewing
machine and bits of wood we were
always making and designing. The
joys of growing up without a TV!

What was the first piece you ever

made? The first product I made for
Helen Round was an apron. Linen
has always been one of my favourite
fabrics and I tried and tested
different weights and styles before
I settled on the long cross-over
design we sell today. Hand-printing
on the pocket came later, following
numerous customer requests.

What inspires your designs? The

amazing views from my studio in
Cornwall are always transforming
with the weather and the seasons.
They provide an ever-changing
backdrop and are a constant source
of inspiration for new designs.

sit on the various products in our

range. After lots of testing we create
the artwork, which is exposed onto
a silk screen using a photographic
process. Then comes the printing,
which is all done by hand on to
each and every product. There
is always an element of surprise
when you lift the screen and see
the print for the first time.

What is your best-selling design?

The Garden Collection has proved

to be one of our most popular
designs, but the new Coastal
Collection is definitely
a close second. Our
lampshades and

What is your unique

selling point?

The products we design

and make are both practical and
beautiful. Each item is exceptionally
well made in small batches to ensure
consistency and quality, using the
highest quality linen fabric. That,
together with the hand-printed
designs, makes each one unique.
As the business continues to grow,
so does our product range and the
variety of colours we stock our
cutting table is always full of ideas
that are in the pipeline. September
will bring a new collection along
with two additional linen colours

INTERIOR
VALET

Every conservatory slowly loses its

sparkle. Over time, the accumulation
of dirt, algae and pollutants can turn
the brightest and whitest into the
dullest and greyest no matter how
much you try to keep it clean. Added
to which, with a fragile glass roof and
hard to reach areas, its a job many of
us do our best to avoid.

WITH EVERY

Weve been enhancing every kind

of conservatory across the UK for over
25 years with our handcrafted blinds
and shutters. Now, weve gone one step
further. Our Conservatory Care Valet
will not only restore your conservatory
to its former glory both inside and out,
it will help keep it that way too.
Using bespoke cleaning and care
treatments our two person technical
team will meticulously clean and polish
your conservatory. Completed in just
a single day, a Thomas Sanderson
Conservatory Care Valet will put back
that as new look and inspire you to

Owners advice

The benefit of having

someone to look after your
holiday home is enormous.
It means when you arrive
the beds are already made
up and the towels
are clean.

With a holiday home, the trick is to

keep things simple and easy-care,
says Nancy Cruickshank, the owner
of this converted fisherman's cottage
in Devon. If you have a lot to look at
through the windows, painting the
walls white throughout means there is
nothing to distract you from the view.
White walls also always make a small
place feel more spacious.

completely by accident, remembers
Nancy Cruickshank. It belonged to
good friends of ours who had bought it as a
complete wreck and done it up. We borrowed
it for a weekend one November and had a
wonderful time. On the way home they rang to
thank their hosts and discovered the property
was going to be sold. Jim immediately said wed
have it, says Nancy. That was seven years ago and
by the following January the couple were the
delighted owners of this cottage in the village
of Lympstone in south Devon.
While the family spends term-time weeks
in London, their seaside cottage is a magnet
in the summer months and for many winter
weekends. Its appeal is obvious. At high tide
the house dips its feet in the sea and the wide

At high tide the house dips its feet in the sea and the
wide bay window offers an unfettered view of the estuary
bay window, which stretches across most of one
sitting room wall, offers an unfettered view
across the estuary.
Nancy has done a fantastic job giving the
interior a real wow factor. Formerly two
fishermans cottages knocked into one, the
property had been modernised by the time the
Cruickshanks came to buy it. However it only
had two bedrooms, says Nancy, and we often
invite friends to stay. So we decided to make a
few changes and add another bedroom.

total revamp
About 18 months after moving into the cottage,
the improvements began. The couple inherited
two shower rooms, but to make washing easier
when the children were younger they decided
to swap the double walk-in shower in the main
en suite for a bath. A third bedroom with a Velux
window was created in the loft. It doesnt have
full head height, explains Nancy, but as it is

mainly used by children, that isnt a problem. We

didnt want to ruin the character of the building
by raising the roof. And as a result we didnt
need to ask for planning permission.
The second stage of improvements began in
spring 2013 when the couple decided to tank
(waterproof) the external walls. The house is
very old and the river is incredibly tidal and salty,
explains Nancy. The salt was getting into the
mortar between the bricks and drawing in water.
The resulting damp began to discolour the plaster
like tea stains, so a total revamp was called for.
We put the furniture in storage, says Nancy. The
kitchen cupboards, radiators and all the plaster
came off the walls and a waterproof lining was
laid under the new plaster. Then we decided
that, with all this work going on, we might as well
change some of the rickety windows. The old bay
window in the sitting room was replaced with a
bespoke system of folding glass panels. Acting like
a balcony with a sea view, the new window has

After the cottage had been repainted, inside

Decoratively the Cruickshanks have kept
to a seaside theme with blue and white

and wooden beam left exposed for texture. Most
floors are covered in reconditioned oak boards,
washed in a grey-white floor paint, while the
little entrance area has practical slate tiles that
cope perfectly with sandy wellies. I do love the
chic country mix of French Provencal and New
England styles, confesses Nancy, who opted for

scrubbed pine and painted furniture rather

than polished wood, and nautical stripes or
plain fabrics rather than florals. Careful not to
introduce an urban edge into her seaside home,
she opted for driftwood mirrors and fishermansstyle lighting and was careful to watch her
budget when buying major items of furniture.
There seemed no point in spending a fortune on
seating when we have dogs and children and are
only here for holidays and weekends, she says.
Ikea sofas and chairs, all with washable covers,
were the obvious answer.
When the family is in London, a local couple
keeps an eye on the property, which is greatly
reassuring. The cottage represents family time
for us, says Nancy. Its where we come to relax,
far away from our high-tech working lives. We are
right in the heart of the village and the richness
of the area grows every time we come down. I
cant imagine a time when we wont be able to
escape to our little cottage by the sea. &IPH

A COASTAL getaway
After visiting Cornwall every year for a decade, the Halls finally took
the plunge and bought a holiday home in the perfect seaside setting

the spider-infested bungalow does not
sound too promising. However, after
viewing a dozen different properties, Melanie and

their favourites. And, despite the boys less than

hands down. On that day we had seen four other
places, but Mermaid Cottage just felt right for us,
says Melanie. It hadnt been lived in for a couple of
years hence the spiders but had previously been
a much-loved family home. It was ready for some
updating, but that didnt really matter as long as it
was, or could be, big enough for what
we wanted and the location was right.
The bungalows location was, in fact, perfect.

The property itself, though, was ready for an
overhaul. The Halls wanted to open up the
downstairs, and decided to add a large sundeck to
create more of a connection with the views. They
also extended some of the rooms, put in a new
kitchen and bathrooms, laid new flooring, added
a utility and an outdoor shower and modernised
throughout, replacing all the doors, removing oldfashioned built-in storage and fitting new skirting
and architraves. In all, it took about seven months.
It went surprisingly smoothly, says Melanie,
www.periodhomesandinteriors.com

especially considering we were doing it from 370

miles away, as our main home is in Halifax, West
Yorkshire. It was largely due to the fact that we did
so much preparation with our architect before the
work started, and that our builders were so good.
The most dramatic change was to turn a small
kitchen and separate dining room into one openplan sociable room that leads directly outside via
full-height sliding glass doors. It is now enviably
light and bright, with a feeling that is at once cosy
and spacious. Another major transformation was
to two small upstairs rooms, one of which had
a chimney stack in the centre, that were almost
unusable due to their sloping roofs. The Halls
increased the head height and removed the
chimney stack and the dividing wall, creating a
bright, light bedroom for their three boys.
Humphrey was born just before the purchase
was finalised, and Melanie made the majority of
her decorating decisions with a tiny baby in a sling.
It really focuses the mind, she laughs. I mainly
collected bits and pieces as and when I saw them. >>

simple pleasures
Initially Melanie had an idea that the house
should feature lots of ticking stripes, with a colour
palette of blues, whites and reds. A
s I started
shopping, however, the vision seemed to change
into something softer, so that actually all the
colours are fairly muted. In the end, the colour
scheme was based around the stripes on a bath
mat that I bought on a whim. I believe in following
your instincts and buying only what you love.
Now the house is finished, Melanie and Jeremy
visit as frequently as they can, and in between rent
it out as a holiday let. We spend a lot of time on
the beach, says Melanie. The older boys love to
bodyboard and kayak, and are learning to sail.
In the evenings well have barbecues and spend
time in the garden. Basically, we try to keep our
time here as simple and family-oriented
as possible. We really hate leaving. &IPH

t was love at first sight when Julie

Fitzgerald Vitelli, originally from Liverpool
and of Irish descent, set eyes on this
cottage in West Cork on the beautiful Sheeps
Head Peninsula. I had always loved Ireland,
particularly the coast of Cork, and was keen to
buy a holiday home in the area. I contacted a
few estate agents but nothing ticked the right
boxes, so I abandoned my search. Months later
I received an email from an agent featuring
details of a rather run-down cottage near
Bantry. I viewed the cottage on a gloriously
sunny afternoon in May 2006 and was
completely captivated, says Julie.
The cottage was owned by an elderly retired
American artist who had taken some steps to
renovate it but found it difficult to maintain.

Due to the wild coastal and hillside location it

had become rather weather-beaten and run
down over the years with poor drainage, a
leaky roof, rotten floors and damp and mouldy
walls. When I first met him he said to me:
So youre the next guiding force of this place.
That, combined with the agents email Id
received out of the blue, really made me feel
it was fate that had driven me here and the
cottage was meant to be mine.

Art is an important part of the history of the cottage, so

I found pieces that would have a sense of belonging
required as well as new internal floors and
stairs, a new kitchen and bathrooms, new
windows and a replacement slate roof. We
had to dig out a lot of earth at the back of the
property and put in land drains. We also had
to take down the back gable as it was unstable,
so it turned out to be a huge renovation
project, and much more work than I had
first anticipated, says Julie.
Fortunately, help was at hand. My father is
a retired architect so I knew he would have
some innovative ideas on the layout. He drew
up all the plans by hand and helped me make
the most of the available space. We decided
on an open-plan kitchen/dining/living area
downstairs, with an upstairs bathroom and
three bedrooms, one with an en suite. He
gave me the bare bones and I concentrated
on the interiors. It all came together with the

help of an excellent local building company.

When it came to the interior, Julie took her
inspiration from the traditional buildings in
the area with their whitewashed walls, exposed
stone, timber beams and flagstone floors. I
really wanted to stay true to the spirit of the
cottage and to preserve the understated feel
it had when I first saw it, so it was important

in keeping with the landscape. I also wanted
the ambience inside the cottage to be as

distinct sense of deja

as this is the second property
theyve renovated in the
very same Dorset country
lane. We did up a house
down the road in 2005, and
then moved away to open
an art gallery in a nearby
village, explains Toni. But we both missed our old
home badly, especially its semi-rural location and
fabulous coastal views. So when the couple heard
about a property in the lane that was soon to come
onto the market, they couldnt believe their luck.
It was far from love at first sight, however, when >>

As soon as the warmer weather arrives, we fold back

the doors and create a wonderful outdoor dining area
the couple first viewed the property a 1950s
bungalow that was in serious need of updating
and modernising. Looking back, Toni recalls
feeling distinctly daunted by the challenges
ahead, but Mervyn was quietly optimistic.
Although the building needed stripping out
and reconfiguring, as veteran renovators (this
was to be their sixth major project), Mervyn
was confident he and Toni could transform
the bungalow into the serene coastal home
they both wanted.
Securing the deal was far from
straightforward, as the house was initially
priced slightly beyond the couples budget,
after factoring in the cost of all the building
work required. We both had our hearts set on
moving back to the lane, so we decided to bide
our time, rather than going for other houses,
says Toni. The couples patience was eventually

rewarded, for six months later the property

remained unsold. Happily, the price dropped,
our offer was accepted and we went ahead with
the purchase, says Toni.

making changes
After drawing up designs for the rebuild, Toni
and Mervyn applied for planning permission.
Obtaining approval for their plans was a long,
drawn-out process, since the bungalow was
sandwiched between two listed properties.
Initially, we wanted to raise the roof level, but
our first application was turned down, says
Toni. We werent allowed to change the original
roofline or the footprint of the building. We
then sought the advice of our neighbour Chris
Jackson, a retired surveyor, who suggested
we compromise and build a mezzanine floor
instead. To save costs, the couple lived on site >>

light and space

Toni and Mervyn both agreed the pre-existing
Mid-Century layout (with the main bedroom
and sitting room at the front, and the guest
bedroom, dining room and small kitchen at
the rear) needed completely rethinking. Their
top priority was to maximise the sense of light
and space. The first thing we did was to knock
down the interior walls, which made a massive
difference, says Mervyn. With the expert help
of Chard-based builders Darren and Martin
Emery, and local handyman Paul Reid, the
couple then built a new kitchen and living room
at the front of the property, and replaced the
dated wooden conservatory with a wrap-around
verandah and tri-fold patio doors. As soon as
the warmer weather arrives, we fold back the
doors and instantly create a wonderful outdoor

dining area, adds Mervyn. New windows were

also installed in the sitting room to make the
most of the glorious sea views. Toni is a keen
painter, and much to her delight the newly built
mezzanine floor turned out to be the perfect
spot for a light-filled artists studio.
Moving home also called for a radical round
of decluttering. Our previous home was much
bigger, so we decided to keep only our favourite
pieces of furniture, and got rid of everything
else, says Toni. Ive never seen myself as a
minimalist before, but Ive discovered that its
far more enjoyable to live with just the things
you really love.
Several months on, with the building work
complete, Toni turned her attention to the
decor. She was keen to keep the design looking
as light and spacious as possible, so she opted
for a neutral palette of soft creams, blues and
greens, with splashes of red and orange as
accents. Junk shop finds and much-loved

worth the effort

Despite Tonis initial misgivings, both she and
Mervyn agree that the time and effort involved
in renovating the bungalow was thoroughly
worthwhile. We absolutely love our home, and
the revamped space suits our lifestyle really well,
she says. Its great being back in Lyme Regis, and
the towns artistic atmosphere is a constant source
of inspiration. Ive taken up sculpture after

Did you know?

The terms flotsam and jetsam, used to
describe odds and ends found washed
up on beaches, refer to specific types of
marine waste flotsam (to float) for debris,
often due to shipwrecks, found floating
on the water; jetsam (jettison) are items
deliberately thrown overboard
by a crew of a ship in distress
to lighten the load.

GARDEN | SEASIDE PLANTING

Dense planting with no lawn and no exposed soil creates

an illusion of a garden much bigger than it actually is

FEATURE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LEIGH CLAPP

ardening by the sea requires careful

planning as you need to deal with a
range of challenges, including salt spray
and wind. Climatic conditions vary around the
coast, from mild down south to exposed and cold
further north. Think beyond the usual lawn with
beds and embrace the unique visual elements of
the coast from pebbles to flotsam and jetsam
found along the beach. Create shelter with
boundaries that filter the wind and salt; then find
seaside-proof plants to create clumps and drifts.
An example of taking on the challenge with
exuberance is Driftwood, a small garden in
East Sussex. Owner Geoff Stonebanks has
created a vibrant jumble with creative detailing,
packed full of ideas to inspire, by fully embracing
the possibilities the location offers. When he
moved from his small town garden in Barnet to
Driftwood in 2004 Geoff had an initial dream to
create a cottage garden, bringing with him more
than 100 pots from his London home. The saltladen winds prevented that; many of my plants
were lost in the first winter and I have learnt
from experience, he explains. I had to work
with the prevailing weather conditions and create
gravel beds and use plants that defy the wind
and rain. The garden has developed organically,
a bit at a time as an idea came to me theres
been no grand plan.
Starting in 2007 with a summerhouse, Geoff
worked his way around the sloping plot, removing
the lawns, creating level areas for furniture and
developing different garden rooms. I made wind
breaks with Griselinia littoralis and low hedges with

choice for coastal planting,
as is Stipa tenuissima.

Olearia traversii Tweedledum, using wicker panels

to both ease the wind and help divide the garden
into rooms, he adds.
The exposed front garden is beach themed,
partly inspired by the Derek Jarman landscape,
with an old timber rowing boat, lobster pots, fish
crates, sculptural driftwood and rusted metal
features, and is planted with wafting grasses,
bright perennials and agaves, all set in gravel.
Sunny faces of Gaillardia Dazzler and Coreopsis
Calypso mingle with clouds of Verbena bonariensis
and magenta penstemons. Timber seats are
placed to look out over the garden to the sea and
allow time for Geoff and partner Mark Glassman
to enjoy the location. A new feature for this year
is a jetty with water beneath.

A LAYERED TAPESTRY
In contrast, the back garden is a layered tapestry
of colourful planting and quirky installations,
and is home to more than 400 varieties of plants
and shrubs that draw the eye as you wander the
winding paths. Heavy, dense planting with no
lawn and no exposed soil creates an illusion of a
garden much bigger than it actually is, explains
Geoff. Here he has successfully created a feeling
of a cottage garden with its eclectic palette; from
pots billowing with petunias and fuchsias to green
metal patio furniture that appears to float on a
sea of daisies. Creative one-off pieces abound,

once owned by family and friends, adds Geoff.
It is clear this is a garden made of great care
and passion that continues to evolve. When I first
decided to create my garden, with absolutely no
experience in garden design, I just did what felt
right for me, and I have achieved it by trial and
error. Never be afraid to try something, even if it

Tips for coastal gardens

Provide windbreaks with hedges that filter

and slow down the wind.
Use living willow fences and chestnut picket
fences with narrow gaps to allow wind through.
Geoff uses hardy perennials that work in the
coastal conditions then adds summer annuals
across both gardens.
Cut out some portholes in hedges to give views.
Look for plants with the botanical names of
Maritima or Littoralis, meaning of the shore.
Coastal plants often have tough, hairy leaves to
protect against moisture loss and salt damage.
Plant in late spring and summer to give plants
time to establish before winter gales.
Mulch and protect young plants with shingle,
flint, grit or gravel this provides sharp drainage
while conserving moisture at the roots.
Use bright colours in the stronger light.

Weve remodelled this

house to fit our lifestyle
perfectly, and its a wonderful
space for entertaining our
family and friends who
come to visit.

herself lucky to have a
studio with such fabulous
sea views. The long

block was made by a local
carpenter. It serves as a
great kitchen island, and is
one of our favourite pieces
of furniture, says Toni.

As soon as the warmer weather arrives, we fold back

the doors and create a wonderful outdoor dining area
the couple first viewed the property a 1950s
bungalow that was in serious need of updating
and modernising. Looking back, Toni recalls
feeling distinctly daunted by the challenges
ahead, but Mervyn was quietly optimistic.
Although the building needed stripping out
and reconfiguring, as veteran renovators (this
was to be their sixth major project), Mervyn
was confident he and Toni could transform
the bungalow into the serene coastal home
they both wanted.
Securing the deal was far from
straightforward, as the house was initially
priced slightly beyond the couples budget,
after factoring in the cost of all the building
work required. We both had our hearts set on
moving back to the lane, so we decided to bide
our time, rather than going for other houses,
says Toni. The couples patience was eventually

our offer was accepted and we went ahead with

making changes
After drawing up designs for the rebuild, Toni
and Mervyn applied for planning permission.
Obtaining approval for their plans was a long,
drawn-out process, since the bungalow was
sandwiched between two listed properties.
Initially, we wanted to raise the roof level, but
our first application was turned down, says
Toni. We werent allowed to change the original
roofline or the footprint of the building. We
then sought the advice of our neighbour Chris
Jackson, a retired surveyor, who suggested
we compromise and build a mezzanine floor
instead. To save costs, the couple lived on site >>

ASK THE EXPERTS

We answer the questions to all your renovating
projects and decorating dilemmas

Where can I get a roll-top bath

customised with a bespoke design?

We have just completed this roll-top bath

for a client. When first asked if we could
create a bespoke stencil design, we were left
scratching our heads. The challenge of painting
a geometric design is a big ask when you have
curves going in all directions, and the process took
more than five days. Please give us a call and we
will be happy to chat through your requirements.

At Waxfurniture.org.uk, a family-run
business providing unique furniture delivered
throughout the UK, we are passionate about
vintage craftsmanship combined with modern
design. Taking inspiration from our base in the
Pennines, the dramatic landscape has led Wax to
carefully consider the products used in order to
provide the most eco-friendly furniture we can for
your home. Our choice of low/no VOC products
makes our furniture safe for all of the family. Each
original vintage piece is sought, salvaged and
restored ensuring modern design meets traditional
craftsmanship, providing our customers with
furniture that time may have otherwise forgotten.

Please could you suggest a suitable flooring for the bathroom of our seaside
holiday home? I love the look of wood, but I want it to be hardwearing.

When it comes to choosing a stylish, hardwearing option

for a bathroom floor, wood-effect tiles are perfect. Made
from durable porcelain, they dont mark or scratch as easily as
laminate or natural wooden boards, and if water-resistant grout
is used, they keep water on the surface, rather than allowing
it to soak in. They also come in anti-slip options to add extra
grip to a wet bathroom floor. The latest HD technology is used
to print natural wooden photography onto the tiles, leaving
you with a believable, realistic finish. For an on-trend layout, try
adopting the herringbone pattern (pictred here) to help create a
wonderful eye-catching floor display in your bathroom.

WRITERS BUREAU CREATIVE WRITING COURSE

Why Not Be A Writer?

What our students say:

Ive been published in The Guardian

and Good Life earning 400. And
now Ive got my first book
published by Bloomsbury called
MOB Rule: Lessons Learned by a
Mother of Boys. The Writers Bureau
course provided me with structure, stopped my
procrastination but most importantly it provided the
impetus to try something different.
Hannah Evans, Winchester

My total earnings so far are

2,500.
Victor Wright, West Midlands
When I started the Writers
Bureau course, I wanted to explore
avenues for my writing and develop
and strengthen my personal style. I
had no idea that it would lead to me
being a published writer of novels and
short stories. I still pinch myself when I receive
emails and messages from readers whove enjoyed
my work or when I give talks to book clubs and visit
bookstores to do signings. These are magical
moments that have changed my life my dream has
come true.
Jane Isaac, Northamptonshire
As a result of my cricket articles, I
have been elected into The Cricket
Writers Club an organisation that
counts experienced journalists
among its members. One of the
perks of this membership is a press card
that gives me entry into all of Englands cricket
stadium press boxes.
Martin Read, West Sussex
I chose to sign with Ammonite
Press, who had a reputation for
producing high quality art and
photography books.
Sarah Plater, Buckinghamshire
When I first saw my words in print it
was life changing. Someone else had
read my work, believed in it, paid
for it, and put it out there for others
to see. As more articles made it to
press, my confidence grew and I found I
wanted to inject some of myself into my writing. At
the time of writing this I have received 1,197 for
my work.
Kris Roberts, Somerset
