rom the age of six, Daniella Norling

remembers accompanying her
father on drives around Aucklands
picturesque Herne Bay just so she
could study some of her favourite
houses. So the design director of
Ponsonbys Trove Interior Design
was delighted when she was asked to
work her magic on one of the beloved 1920s villas on
her childhood wish list.
Norling was also no stranger to the villas new
owners a well-travelled, professional couple who
no longer have children living at home as she had
already completed a ive-star boutique hotel on
the South Island for them, as well as their previous
home on the North Island. Like Norling, they are
passionate about beautiful design and craftsmanship,
and sharing her love of art deco, they too wanted the
interiors in this house to remain somewhat faithful to
the period in which it was built.
Originally commissioned by a high-ranking
naval oicial in the 1920s, the house is an exceptional
example of New Zealands art deco style, with original
mouldings and pillars and stunning double stained
glass windows that go all the way up to the third loor
gallery and bathe the antique piano and the large
formal entrance beyond it in an almost celestial light.
Recent additions to the house extending the
kitchen, building a two-car garage, and adding a front
deck are so sympathetic to the original architecture
its hard to tell they werent always there. The owners
even went to the trouble of sourcing original 1920s
roof tiles from Iona College in Hawkes Bay, complete
with existing lichen.
Inside, Norling sourced art deco pieces to mix with
two more of her favourite styles 1930s Hollywood
regency and chinoiserie. Ilove the way these
styles ping of each other adding luxury, texture
and interest, she says, standing in the entrance
of the house, a space that boasts an impressively
large engraved mirrored art deco cabinet by Arte
Veneziana, and a caramel-hued Murano chandelier.
While Norling is usually known for her fearless
use of colour, the palette here is muted. Still, she says,
she refused to embrace beige. No one wants to live in
a bowl of porridge. For her, green is a more palatable
neutral, so she used grey-greens and mixed them
with silver and gold metallics, smoky purples, natural
timbers, licorice blacks and sharp, lacquered blacks.
You can have beauty in subtlety without going the
safe route of utter neutrality, she says.

gold and silver. Depending on where you walk and
where the light is, you get a lot of movement.
In fact, the wallpaper became a dcor solution
too, extending the entry hall all the way to the stairs
and transforming it into a space that is perfect for a
cocktail party. You can almost hear the tinkle of piano
keys and the antique loo table (originally designed
for playing the card game loo) begs for a plate of
canaps. Elegant black lacquered bookshelves display
gleaming gold and bronze objects as well as books that
hint at the library beyond.
Through the pillars is the formal lounge, a room
that is devoid of a television. Its about sitting around
the ire and spending time getting to know people.
Talking, laughing and drinking, says Norling. To
that more convivial end, a deco-esque cocktail
cabinet designed by James Salmond is the centre of
entertainment for the room. The owners have illed
it with Waterford martini glasses in jewel colours.
The cofee table with its glorious veneer is lanked
by art deco-style chairs by LaGaleria of Ecuador
upholstered in a loral velvet by Catherine Martin
from her Gatsby collection (Martin won two Oscars

Norling left the original tiling on the ireplace as well
as a couple of burns on the wooden loor in front of it.
Its part of the provenance of the house, she says.
One room Norling cannot take any credit for is the
kitchen. Aside from the three shiny black pendant
lights that hang over the island, the husband took
charge and directed it from start to inish. The house
was designed in three stages, explains Norling.
Sometimes people can go of piste in their own
homes and end up with something really disparate.
He designed the kitchen after I had inished stage
one and I was so touched that he worked with the
ethos of what I was doing in the rest of the house and
executed it here so beautifully.

sit around one end of it, says Norling. Hes an
excellentcook and its really friendly and full of
soul.Tucked away, perpendicular to the kitchen
island is a butlers kitchen with a walk-in pantry,

Three guest bedrooms take up an entire wing of
the home and are illuminated by refurbished original
art deco light ittings and lamps. I will literally search
the world for my clients to ind the perfect object or
piece of furniture, says Norling. Its a pleasure for
me. The feminine rose room features a pale pink
watered moir silk headboard with nailing detail and
metallic chevron wallpaper from Catherine Martins
Gatsby collection. The masculine counterpart, a
room Norling afectionately refers to as the 50 shades
of grey room has three painted pale grey walls and a
fourth wallpapered with another silvery art decoinspired pattern by Martin. The largest of the guest
rooms features an array of textures from heavy Edo by
Mokum linen curtains and velvet throws, to cottons
and embroidery. This is possibly the most neutral
room in the house, says Norling, but I think the
layering of textiles and textures gives it depth.
Upstairs is a nursery for when the couples twoyear-old nephew sleeps over. Original mouldings
resembling a circus tent set the tone for Catherine
Martins Circus Parade wallpaper, illed with big top
imagery. You can sit in this room and tell a story
to a child just by picking out a character from the
wallpaper, says Norling. Its magical.
Across the passage, the master bedroom boasts
a spectacular view of Coxs Bay and beyond. It is
here that Norlings love of chinoiserie is given its
full expression via a custom-designed pagoda-style
headboard upholstered in a linen pattern featuring
egrets, and black lacquer side tables with orientalinspired handles. An armchair in one corner has
part of an obi over the back. Ive used subtle oriental
motifs quite heavily, she admits. At the foot of the
bed, a vintage shaved oriental rug adds warmth to the
original wooden loors. I like my interiors to look like
theyve been built up slowly and lived in and loved.

What does your role at Carpet Court entail?

Carpet Court approached me to work on tools and content
to help take the headache and stress out of making design
decisions. We want to ensure the principals of how customers
make looring decisions are looked at holistically and cover
everything from colour, desire and need, to practicality
andbudget.
How important is looring in the design process?
Very you can easily change a poor paint decision, its not
so simple to rip up a loor you have just put down. More
importantly, a good loor decision really helps solidify the look
and feel of the style you want to create.

throughout the day. Something as simple as changing
the orientation of furniture in a room to factor in the
light source can alter the entire feel of a space without
spending a penny.
How did your career in interiors evolve?

My interest in interiors began at a very young age with a
penchant for gold lam and anything that glittered! This
changed thankfully, but my love of colour and texture didnt.
Later on I worked for a boutique paint company mixing colour.
This evolved into collaborations with institutions and galleries,
and the formulation of colours for residential and commercial
clients. In 2006 I established Venia Design, a full service
designconsultancy.

What are you most inspired by?

People and how resilient we are. Think about the humble origins

Whats the irst thing you notice when you walk into a home?
The natural light source because it is so important to how we
live and how we function. In design, natural light determines
the orientation and low of a room and we naturally tend to build
Whats on your interiors wish list this winter?

I want to recover my sofa in a dark chocolate velvet as
my boys have destroyed the existing cover. I seem to
have a thing for dark, earthy velvets this year.
What is your top renovating tip?
Design and decorating can be daunting but dont let
that put you of we are all creative beings. Start small,
be considered, set a budget, sort your likes from your
dislikes and enjoy.

COMBINING COLOUR
When creating a combination of colour for a room,
startwith your canvas. The loor and walls are the
backdrop to the introduction of your colour scheme.
Flooring provides the structure and the grounding
elements required to bring your colour combinations
tofruition. Using a neutral-coloured loor in any
product allows you to accent and layer with either cool
or warm tones and does not restrict you to staying
within these palettes if you feel the need for a change.
Dark chocolate and steely grey carpets, and washed-out
white woods and burnished walnut are all excellent
looring choices for anycolour palette. When working
with colour, the choice can be overwhelming. Colour
wheels are a useful tool in helping to decide which
shades to use as your accents, as they contain the 12
primary, secondary and tertiary colours and can be split
into twopalettes of complementary warm and cool
tones. When decorating, think about a rooms use and
what you personally like to help identify which palette
to work with.

Cool palette
Warm colours are energising and

strong. The six warm hues on the
colour wheel are: yellow-green,
yellow, orange-yellow, orange,
red-orange, and red.
Reds and oranges: these colours
represent power, they raise
energy levels, and because they
are the colours of heat, they evoke
warmth and are invigorating.
Yellows: cheery and uplifting,
yellow is a colour that appears
to loat. Like sunshine, it is a
compelling colour but one to
watch as if used incorrectly, it
can appear sickening. The key is
to think of the muted, muddied
yellows found in nature.
Tip: nature provides harmonious
palettes with a balance of warm
and cool, light and dark colours.
Your aim is to create this sense
of balance in a room with your
colour palette.
Cool colours evoke feelings of

calm and relaxation. The six cool
hues on the colour wheel are:
green, blue-green, blue, bluepurple, purple, and purple-red.
Blues and purples: these
colours symbolise serenity.
Skyblues evoke wide, open
spaces while soft duck egg
bluesofer tranquillity. These
are good colours for bedrooms
and bathrooms. Dark blues are
rich and inviting when used as
anaccent.
Greens: known as natures
neutral, green hues incorporate
both the cooling agents of blue
and the heat of yellow and ofer a
freshness other colours dont. It
is the most restful colour on the
eye and suited to any room.
Tip: use other neutrals whites,
blacks and greys to play on
light, shadow and form.

ormer fashion designer Claire
Kingan-Jones has created a relaxed
feel in the Auckland home she shares
with her husband and teenage sons. The
former owner/designer of womens fashion
labels RJC and Kingan-Jones has travelled
extensively, particularly in India, Bali and
her native South Africa, where she picked
up both knick-knacks for her home and a
fearless approach to colour. So it was an
easy decision for her to work with interior
designer and former Republic publicist
Fiona McLeod to create a resort feel in her
Herne Bay home.
She and husband Struan Kingan bought
the two-storey house when sons Byron and
Oscar were preschoolers. They enlisted
architect Andrew Meiring to reconigure
the property, which now has four bedrooms,
three bathrooms and three living areas. The
sleek, modern kitchen opens onto a patio
and sizeable pool with a barbecue area, all in
keeping with Kingan-Jones love of casual
entertaining and abusy, noisy household.
She enjoys hunting for dcor inds that
she can revamp, favouring mid-century
modern and art deco pieces and describes
her interior style as eclectic, contemporary
with classical references. I dont like being
precious about a space, she says.

are prominent members of the
New Zealand art and design scene,
so its hardly surprising their home is an
absolute standout. A massive concrete cube
spanning four levels and straddling a corner
on Aucklands Upper Queen Street, the
building also houses Vuletas art, vintage and
interiors business, Design55, and is home to
her 19-year-old daughter Isabella.
The couple bought the former warehouse
in 2005, completely gutted it and engaged
the services of New York-based Kiwi
architect David Howell. It was designed
to be sculptural from the outside, says
Langsford, a long-time art collector, dealer
and owner of the Gow Langsford galleries in
Lorne and Kitchener streets.
Inside its a slick, high-walled, allwhite space that showcases the couples
extraordinary art, furniture and objet
collection to perfection. Modern
masterpieces by the likes of British artist
Damien Hirst are mixed with highlycollectable 1940s Italian vintage furniture,
a rare historic wooden cross from the
Solomon Islands, a silver plate by Pablo
Picasso and glasswork by Anne Robinson.
You can put anything together so long as
the quality is right, says Langsford.
The open-plan kitchen, dining and
principal living area is the heart of the
homeas the couple entertain often for
business and pleasure. We love sharing
it because were passionate about what we
do,says Vuleta.
On the top loor is the couples
bedroomand ensuite bathroom (with
a viewto downtown Auckland and the
harbour from the tub), opening onto a large
balcony and rooftop-style garden with
enviable views over the city to the Waitakere
Ranges. The garden is my sanctuary, says
Vuleta. Its our space. This is true urban
living and it its the couples lifestyle and
professional needs to a tee. I didnt want to
be moving lawns in Herne Bay or cleaning
pools, says Langsford.

hen North & South art director and

columnist Jenny Nicholls bought her 1940s
cottage on Waiheke in 2007, it was more
holiday crash pad than the permanent home Nicholls
needed. There was enough shelf space for a few cans
of spaghetti and some togs, but not enough for my
books or even my shoes! You couldnt swing a cat
in the kitchen, and the rainwater tank was the size
of a washing machine. To cap it all, everything was a
dreary beige, except the carpet, which was grey.
After the irst crucial purchase (a bigger
rainwatertank), Nicholls set to work bringing colour
into the house with some nail-biting online buys.
The mercury gold glass lights, linen curtains and
Fornasetti ish wallpaper were all impulsive sale
bargains from US website anthropologie.com.
Then a fortuitous island friendship with spatial
designer Michelle Ben Zur made everything easier.

I saw her house, says Nicholls, and thought: I need
some of that! Ben Zur made architectural drawings
of Nicholls two-storey home, reworking the kitchen,
dining area, bathroom and laundry without changing
the footprint. I thought I could do the interior design
myself, but it is much more eicient working with a
professional. Michelle is an ideas machine. Setting
cube shelves into the kitchen wall, for instance,
freedup space in the kitchen and, in a stroke, also
made space for a bookshelf in the bedroom.
Ben Zur supervised the building and tiling
andeven designed the bookcases and lighting
herself. Imbeige phobic I love mixing patterns,
says Nicholls. Agreat designer like Michelle is a
personality lavourenhancer.

Annie Sloan is the artist behind
the decorative painting trend that has
transformed the way we style our homes.
f youve ever looked at an old piece of furniture

and thought with a lick of paint, that could look
really great, chances are youre already familiar
with the work of Annie Sloan. The Australian-born
artist has single-handedly transformed the home

gave Johnny and Hildy Kovacs irst-hand
experience of what it takes to make it in the
world of furniture design. Kovacs started out like
many businesses in New Zealand, in the garage of
our family home in Christchurch, says Johnny.
His parents Stephen and Maria Kovacs emigrated
to New Zealand in 1957, having lived as refugees
in Austria, where they made handbags and shoes,
after escaping the communist regime in Hungary.
With his new-found freedom and passion for craft,
Stephen soon realised he could design and make
his own furniture. My mother was a good sewer
and pattern maker, so they worked well together
and in 1959 furniture making became their full
timepursuit, says Johnny.
At a young age, Johnny and Hildy started
learningthe skills that go into each design, both
joining the family irm after university. Its a made
by hand, know by heart philosophy, says designer

to constructing frames and sewing upholstery, every cut,

stitchornail is undertaken with care.
Despite many industry changes, the rise of lat-pack
furniture and direct importing, Kovacs has stayed true to
Stephens vision, producing inely crafted pieces that can be
inished in a fabric or leather chosen by the customer. Its
the diference between us and what is available on the mass
market, says Johnny. But there are still a lot of people who
believe we import our furniture, so we wanted to address this
in our new advertising campaign to make people proud of
supporting skilled local craftspeople. We make it right. We
make it here.
As the company approaches its 60th anniversary Johnny
saysKovacs will continue to evolve to meet its customers
needs, while maintaining the standards of excellence and lair
the brand has become known for.
At my fathers funeral in 1993, a Christchurch resident of
Hungarian origin gave me a pair of shoes my father had made
for him when he irst arrived in New Zealand, he says in
testament to the craftsmanship that has made Kovacs one of the
most respected and well-loved names in the industry today.

My style is unstructured. I endeavour to look
professional but relaxed at the same time. I have a
couple of tailored jackets, but in the main I prefer
oversized everything, except for trousers.
How does your style change in winter?
If anything my wardrobe is even more unstructured
during winter. Oversized t-shirt dresses, lots of
layering and overcoats. I love contrasts in texture.
What about accessories?
I like to wear scarves in winter, they break up
the blackness of my wardrobe, and I always wear
glovesnot only do they protect my hands but
theyre also just a little bit Audrey Hepburn.

Scotland. Its one of the most beautiful countries Ive

To hunt for and invest in well-designed and
well-made, timeless pieces. In my case, this has
resulted in a collection of new or second-hand
European coats and jackets that I love and will
continue to wear for a long time.

Practical, wash and wear. I love to wear special
vintage conversation pieces or things that hark
back to my grandmothers on my maternal side
its tailored coats Ive been handed down and on my
fathers side its Indian gold jewellery, neck pieces or
heavily beaded shawls.
Do you have a work uniform?
White shirts from Country Road, Witchery or
Barkers if Ive borrowed my husbands. The good old
Glassons black skivvy (I buy three a season), Zambesi

I have to wear clothes that are suitable for building
sites and boardrooms.

when it comes to fashion?
Black, white and tan. Never red.

I would say its eclectic, edgy and preppy, with an
emphasis on structure, form and colour. Lots of
interesting jewellery, oversized scarves and big bags.
Its mainly the fabrics that change rather than the
style. In winter I switch from cotton, linen and
viscose to wool and cashmere. I also wear more boots
and leather shoes.
What are your fashion rules?
Keep it simple but surprising. Always wear very
goodquality clothing with an emphasis on inishing
and detail.
What is your fashion obsession?
Interesting colour combinations and unusual
jewellery.

anhattan-based interior
designer Fawn Galli,
has created the perfect
getaway from city
life in her Brooklyn
brownstone. After 15
years living it up as a
hard-working party
girl in the West Village, a pregnant Galli and
her architect husband Julio Salcedo crossed the
Brooklyn bridge just over a decade ago to set up
home in the family-friendly neighbourhood of
Carroll Gardens.
They purchased a 760 square metre, turn of
the 20th century townhouse, which was painted
red inside and was somewhat dark and dreary.
Galli immediately set about bringing light into the
four-storey home with a quirky design aesthetic she
describes as a mix of 70s disco, Alice in Wonderland
and modern vintage. Key to the look is Gallis love
of nature and her desire to include lora and fauna
motifs throughout the home including a life-size
black ibreglass deer acquired at the Chelsea Flower
Market, which stands proudly by the ireplace in the
living room.
The nice aspect of this townhouse is the front
garden, says Galli, while discussing her afection
for her home. I feel like theres a real kind of restful
moment from the streets and the craziness of New
York City as soon as I enter the garden.
The inluence of the garden is evident throughout
the house, thanks to Gallis vibrant colour palette
of bright green and hot pink. I love colour and a
sense of animal life and fantasy, which I wanted to
incorporate into the interiors, she explains.
Galli, her husband and sons, Gaspar and Laszlo,
occupy a duplex over the two lower loors of the
brownstone and rent out the upper loors. The

The couple kept renovations to a minimum, instead choosing
to open up the space with colour and clever design tricks. With
most townhouses theres an issue with light, says Galli. So I
used some metallic wallpaper to relect the light from outside,
because brownstones can be very dark places to live.
In the living room, two pieces of Roy Lichtenstein wallpaper
hang in frames by the window, surrounded by the silver metallic
Florence Broadhurst wallpaper. Together with a white leather
Natuzzi sofa adorned with colourful cushions, the art adds a
disco vibe to the space. Either side of the sofa sit matching table
lamps, which Galli found in a store on the Lower East Side, and
above it hangs a cuckoo clock she bought in SoHo.

I really love to use

I feel like it gives it this

fabric), a chair upholstered in vibrant green velvet, a

single potted palm tree and, of course, the ibreglass
deer, to bring the all-important sense of nature into
the room.
I think it brings height to a living space and gives
it a kind of tropical lourish, she says of the tree, and
I really love to use animals because I grew up in the
countryside. I love animals in the interior. I feel like
it gives it this kind of other-worldly ambiance.
This other-wordly feel continues throughout the
house where you ind loral wallpaper with matching
curtains, a gold ornamental rabbit by Paul Smith
displayed alongside a bright pink rabbit on a marble
mantelpiece, and ceramic birds dotted all around.
Downstairs, a door leads from the garden into the
hallway of which the bedrooms are located.
The couple had a door put into the master bedroom
to give them direct access to the garden and create a
constant loop to the outdoors.
Walk straight down the hallway and theres the
master bedroom with a walk-in closet and doors
that bring you out to the garden again, says Galli,
highlighting how the layout of the house embraces
its surroundings.

When not enjoying the wonderland she has created in her
home, Galli does residential and commercial work in New
York City, Connecticut, and the Hamptons. Asked to choose
a favourite spot in the house, she says she spends a lot of time
with her family in the dining room, which is connected to the
kitchen via a long pass.
An acrylic chandelier hangs low over a white marble-topped
Saarinen Tulip table, which is surrounded by four vintage
white leather chairs. Custom-made loor-to-ceiling walnut
bookshelves loaded with the familys books line one wall. The
children do their homework there and we share meals there,
she says of the room. In the warmer months, we like to have
friends over for barbecues on the terrace of the kitchen.
Then, of course, there is the garden, where Galli and Salcedo
like to drink their morning cofee when the weather allows and
where the children play to the sound of birds in the trees and the
hum of New York City in the distance.

estled among the villa-lined

streets of St Marys Bay, sits
a house that subtly deies the
Auckland suburbs sense of
history. The contemporary
glass and concrete structure
built by Ian Webster and
his partner Jianni Felpas
is all stylish white furniture and straight lines,
which should come as no surprise given Websters
pedigree as the founder and former owner of the
Verge womens fashion label.
The house is a collaboration between Jianni and
myself. We always had a strong vision, we wanted
simplicity, we wanted clear and uncluttered, says
Webster, who since selling Verge last year has
become a trustee of a charitable trust and is looking
forward to whatever the future brings.
Prior to inding their current spot, the couple

lived in a traditional board and batten house in
Herne Bay. They decided it was time for a change
and began perusing properties in the local area and
neighbouring St Marys Bay. Each time they found a
house that excited them, they put in an ofer but had
little success initially.
We went through three attempts at buying but
none of them worked out, recalls Webster.
Then, while he was on a work trip in China,
Webster received a call about a vacant piece of
land for sale in St Marys Bay. When he returned,
the couple went to look at the plot. As soon as we
approached, we knew it would be an incredible place
to live, he says.
The duo had a fairly free rein when it came to the
kind of house they could build on the 680square
metre section. The only condition from the council

was that the house must be in keeping with the

grain of the area. As far as design went, they knew
what they didnt want. We didnt want a bungalow
or colonial look. We always wanted something more
modern and contemporary, he says. Something
using a lot of glass and wood, and something that
could nestle into the hill without looking too
harsh. We really just wanted the new place to
hang together, be easy to live in and ultimately
uncomplicated.
They chose Andrew Patterson of Patterson
Associates as the architect for the project. Patterson
had clear ideas about how the property could make
the most of the views and Webster knew he had
made the right choice. Andrew is a great visualiser,
hes got an amazing team behind him and theyve got
a great building team too, he says.
Weekly meetings on-site meant the couple
wereinvolved in every stage of the build process.
This, says Webster, was relatively stress-free,
despite the discovery of a well which required a
pump to be incorporated into the build to direct
water into a drain.
Ive heard the horror stories, but we had a great
relationship with the builders and we kept tabs on
where we were at every stage of the project. There
were no surprises, he adds.
Three years passed before the couple were able to
move into their new home, following the design and
planning consent processes and the 18-month build.
We didnt want to compromise on anything,
so we bought a place in Westmere while we were
building so we had somewhere to live and wouldnt
feel like we needed to rush, says Webster.
The Westmere property was sold once the
couples home was complete, and they couldnt be
happier with the result.
The main living quarters are on the upper loor,
which has an easy-living apartment feel with an
open-plan kitchen, powder room, laundry, and
master bedroom with dressing room and ensuite.
The homes brilliant indoor-outdoor low is
facilitated by expansive doors leading out to an
entertaining area and pool. Downstairs, theres a
bedroom, study, a second bathroom, and a second
laundry. A lift and set of concrete stairs allow easy
access between the loors. All the spaces work

When we were designing

the room layout, we were
thinking about how we
already lived, so the house
its us perfectly.
well together, and we really dont have any spaces

that we dont use, says Webster. Initially sceptical
about the need for extra rooms downstairs, he is
now convinced, saying the study and spare bedroom
areused a lot.
The layout of the upper loor relects the couples
lifestyle and was designed around the kitchen and
outdoor area, which is where they spend most of
their time when alone or entertaining friends.
When we were designing the room layout, we were
thinking about how we already lived, so the house
its us perfectly, he says.
When asked what they love most about their
home, Webster quotes Grand Designs presenter
Kevin McCloud, saying: Good architecture makes
you happy.
Its a great house to live in, he says. Theres
nothing we would change and nothing that has
disappointed us. I think when you build, you often
hope for the bestbut expect the worst. But for us it
wasgreat.
Webster used Auckland-based interior designer
Adrienne Seager for the homes textiles, and when
he discovered that Seagers husband is an engineer
at Fisher & Paykel, he was happy to have them it out
the kitchen too. The look is tied together by the use
of concrete in three inishes: honed, rough sawn and
polished. The interiors are very simple really, says
Webster. Jianni and I knew what we liked and what
we didnt. We went with the classics and took the
style of the Barcelona Pavilion as a starting point.
Plush rugs, deep-seated sofas, wooden looring,
and the presence of miniature schnauzer Bex,
all help to create a comfortable and welcoming
atmosphere. Ifproof were needed that minimalist,
modern homes can also be warm and characterful
spaces, then look no further than this carefully
constructed corner of StMarys Bay.

Into the blue

The bold use of an inky blue palette totally transformed this Melbourne
home, without the need for structural alterations.

elinda Halls house in Melbourne,

Australia, shows what can be
done to live more beautifully
within an existing framework of
a building. Melbournes oldest
suburbs were laid out in the
boom years of the Victorian era
gold rush, when neat quadrants
of brick cottages were built, street by street. These
streets are now lush and leafy, and the homes in them
much sought-after.
Houses of this era are most often renovated to
retain the gracious front rooms, while demolishing
the various additions at the back to erect a modern
extension; a white box, if you will, with lofty ceilings,
bright spaces and open-plan living. Halls house had
already been renovated in this manner when she
found it, but she viewed it as a blank canvas and set
about adding meaning to our space for our family.
Without any further structural changes or
architectural input she has transformed the house
into something altogether more sophisticated a
home that responds to the diferent needs of a growing
family and one that feels warm, layered andenriching.
The house retains no vestige of its former life as a
working dairy and from the street, the formal garden

and the deep red brick facade give no hint to the vim
and colour of the interior.
Hall, an interior stylist, together with her business
partner Fiona Richardson, forged a design ethos
based on the idea of interiors relecting the rich
layersof life, where many lifetimes of travel and living
come together in a carefully edited modern family
home. They set about creating diferent spaces to
allow the family to congregate or separate, depending
on the mood.
Halls husband, Patrick, was an enthusiastic
collaborator in the project. He brought pieces home
from his travels abroad, including a pair of pineapple
wall sconces, although even he baulked at lugging a
tin of Farrow & Ball paint across the world.
The transformation of the house started with
wallpaper, which Hall says assisted in creating warm,
emotive spaces. For me it harked back to positive
childhood experiences my daughter Roses room
was papered in a soft metallic Colefax and Fowler
Rose wallpaper, which was a nod to my grandmothers
decorating choices.
The greatest leap, though, was choosing a deep,
midnight blue as the dominant colour in the back part

of the house. This created warmth and allowed for

diferent spaces to emerge.
Wallpaper, indoor trees and smaller sitting zones
deined by rugs also assist with this. Two nib walls
papered with the towering trees of Anthropologies
Etched Arcadia Mural cleverly lead away from the
kitchen space. A window seat tucked in the corner
beckons, and French doors painted in the same dark
blue provide a stunning contrast with the vivid green
of the garden, leading the eye outwards.
Painting out all woodwork ensures the depth
of the colour feels endless, says Hall. This single
move and the later decision to paint the kitchen
cabinets and install Spanish tiles in deepest blue
really ensured the success of the scheme. Those tiles
glossily light up the kitchen and enliven the space.
The deep blue contrasts beautifully with pale
loors and pieces such as a blonde-wood sideboard,
created in the 1950s by Albert Gunot, the former
head designer at French department store, LeBon
March. Other special pieces a brass vase, stone
sculpture or wool cushion provide a natural
element to the house and add a thoughtful layer to the
refurbishment, designed to put you at ease.
As Hall says, My favourite experiences at home
are the times when all family members are milling

around in the one large room, separately reading,
drawing, watching TV, cooking but all together.
The warmth of the palette provides much-needed
cosiness on Melbournes cold winter evenings, when
the open ireplace is a blessing.
To link the contemporary rear of the house with
the original rooms at the front, the hallway was
painted at half height in the deep blue. Above this,
sits a dado line in brilliant gold, by artisan Australian
company Porters Paints. The gold picks up gilt
picture frames, including a portrait of Halls mother
by her great-grandfather.
The master bedroom is a study in calm; blush pink
walls create airiness and modern pieces contrast with
the classical architectural forms of the windows. The
pendant light and bedside light are clean and crisp in
this restful room. The colour scheme is classical; pink,
the grey of the original marble ireplace and a pop of
colour from the citrine bedspread.
Corners to sit and read, spaces for children to play
and perform. Enough space for a large gathering of
friends or a quiet moment at the end of a busy week.
That is the success of this inner-city transformation;
all in all, a place of spirited sanctuary.

Fashion designer Vanessa Kortlangs home is a world of riotous
colour and pattern this is how to live loud.

heres something to be said for

the wise, predictive powers
of those who forecast trends
for a living evidenced in the
decision by Australian fashion
designer Vanessa Kortlang to
purchase a home in the then
largely migrant populated
area of South Yarra 27 years ago. The fact this
locale has become one of Melbournes most soughtafter neighbourhoods is of secondary importance
to Kortlang, however, who felt an immediate
connection with the old Victorian house.
She purchased the small single-fronted
weatherboard cottage in 1989. It had been inhabited
by the same woman for more than 60 years and it was
falling down around her. The cottage had a simple
loor plan of rooms of a hallway and very dated
amenities. Kortlang regarded it as a rescue mission
and felt excited to take on the challenge of
renovating such a dilapidated property.

She immediately discovered the piles underneath
the house needed to be replaced, likening the
experience of being inside the property to being on a
listing ship. I will never forget the irst bath I took
there before the repiling I had to hang on to the
sides for dear life so I didnt slide down to the other
end, she laughs.
After some urgent rewiring, repiling and
painting, Kortlang could begin to stamp her
colourful personality onto the propertys interior, a
process that has taken years. This has been a work
in progress for me. My home is an evolution not an
instant overnight renovation. It has taken more than
20 years of collecting, morphing and tweaking to get
it to where it is today, she says. Patience is a virtue!
Kortlangs renovations included a new bathroom
and kitchen it-out 10 years ago, and more recently
knocking down a wall between two smaller rooms to
create a single, larger space. The slow process was

sources, of course, but my
biggest inspiration really
comes from the things I love
and from within.
beneicial, she says, allowing her to live in the space

to see how she used it before making big and costly
decisions.
Religious iconography, pop art, stencil art and
mutinous colour combinations all feature heavily in
Kortlangs home. I think a house is a relection of its
owner and tells a story about the person who lives
there, she says, adding that the happy chic vibe of
her interiors keeps her upbeat. Iam a colourful
person by day, by night, by fashion and by interiors.
Iadore colour and celebrate it in all of its glory.
Kortlang used wallpaper to add an instant
injection of colour and personality to her rooms, and
proudly confesses that her love for wallpaper
pre-dates its fashionable comeback (she bought her
dining rooms silver wallpaper 15 years ago from a
local op shop for just $2 per roll).
For the most part, she opted for simple but
striking patterns in a monochrome palette. The only
room in which she deviated from her largely black
and white wall theme was in her bedroom, which
features a striking blue pattern and large mirrors to
give the illusion of a bigger room.
I wanted the bedroom to feel diferent and the
aqua ikat wallpaper by Schumacher did the trick,
she says.
With such busy walls, Kortlang deliberately kept
her loors plain. The white loorboards were
designed to give the rooms space to breathe, to
create theatre, and allow her multi-coloured

furnishings the chance to pop. Despite being

warned about the impracticality of white looring,
Kortlang says she is pleasantly surprised at how well
the loors have worn.
When it comes to the colourful objects, art
andfurnishings that adorn every room, Kortlang
says she inds inspiration everywhere I took an
aqua Tifany bag into my local paint shop and had
them match it and that became the colour of my
front door and references to her previous life as a
singer in a rocknroll band are scattered throughout
her home.

Kortlang believes that if you love something you

challenge was in combining her diverse tastes into a

cohesive whole. I have so many diferent interests
and passions and am drawn to a lot of diverse
culturesand styles, she says. The challenge when
you have broad and eclectic tastes is how to put so
many diferent styles together and make it work.
There needs to be an underpinning of colour you
build on and a natural sense of display to make it
work as a whole.
The success of her approach shines through in
every room in the house and, unsurprisingly, the
busy designer cherishes time spent at home.
I love putting on some vinyl, poring over a design
book and enjoying my time with like-minded
people, she says. I also equally love throwing open
the courtyard doors on a balmy summer night and
cooking for my friends youd never know you are in
the heart of the city out there.
Living so close to the retail Mecca that is Chapel
Street means indulging her shopping habit is all too
easy for Kortlang.
When I buy for my home I like to shop local and
support the small local retailers. South Yarra and the
surrounding area has so many great unique interiors
stores, where you can ind some really quirky and
interesting pieces. Being a total shopaholic that suits
me down to the ground, she laughs. I can always it
more onto those shelves.

talented couple who designed and built it.

dam and Alice Sharp were

still dating when Adam spied
a For Sale sign on what is
now the top half of the site
of their modern concrete
three-story family home
in Remuera, Auckland. On
the land at the time was a
derelict Cape Cod-style house in desperate need of a
makeover. We were literally ripping out ceilings and
pulling down walls on the irst weekend, says Alice.
But when they stood in the living room and looked
out of a small sash window at the view that stretches
to North Head and Rangitoto, they knew it had
enormous potential.
Realising the realm of possibility in a home is what
this couple is all about. Adam is managing director
of Sharp & Page, an 80-year-old family business
that specialises in residential, commercial, and
commercial hospitality interiors as well as Kitchen
Living, a company focused on creating superior

residential kitchens. Alice, meanwhile, is an interior
designer with her own company, Linea Design.
Still, the refurbished Cape Cod house that had
been so perfect for them became restrictive once they
started their family and found they had too many open
spaces that werent particularly child-friendly. Then
the Sharps had the opportunity to buy the land behind
their site and take it back to its full, original section.
It allowed them to build their dream home from the
ground up, one that would suit the full section and
optimise the living space with swooping three-metre
ceilings on two of the three levels and allow them to
best capture the views and available light.
When you live here like we did for 10 years you
get to understand where the sun is in the afternoon
and where people like to be. Its pretty important,
explains Alice. The pair, along with some early input
from architects, designed the entire house right
down to the skirting boards, mouldings, front door

and staircases. We both love solid structures so we

chose concrete and timber and theres a fair bit of glass
around, she adds.
At the start of the build, which coincided with
Alices third pregnancy, the family moved out. But
because the somewhat tricky section needed pylons
to retain it all the way around, it took three years
before the couple could move back in with daughters
Alannah (eight) and Zara (seven), and son Brook (ive).
It was well worth the wait.
To maximise the elevated views at the back of the
section all the way from Remuera to Newmarket,
Mt Eden and the Domain and bring the outdoors in
as much as possible, they used cantilevers and joinery.
Everything can open right up, says Alice, explaining
how fully retractable glass doors create an outdoor
space on the ground level that is completely sheltered
from wind. Even in winter its an oasis.
Once construction was complete, Alice went to
work on the interiors. Adam and I generally share the
same taste, but we both have strong opinions when it
comes to design and we tend to challenge each other
until we get something special, she says. Her love
of art history as well as merging the classic with the
modern to create contemporary yet timeless rooms
is evident from the moment you enter the house via a
front door that was made by Sharp & Page and which
features a circle and square design. Its a motif that
is repeated from the structured Versailles-inspired
hedge in the front garden to a panel on the kitchen
ceiling and a custom Sensational Floors carpet in the
upstairs lounge.
The Sharps careers keep them enviably abreast
of the latest technological advances for bespoke
touches like the custom rugs (theres a second one in
the entrance hall, also by Sensational Floors, with a
personalised S border inspired by the classic Greek
key design). I like the creative outlet of putting my
own stamp on something. It adds that extra layer of
interest, says Alice.
On the lower level, a sunny lounge that was initially
envisioned as Adam and Brooks refuge from the girls
has become a favourite spot for the whole family.
I am a bit of a hoarder of textiles, says Alice of the
scatter cushions in a mix of fabrics. Especially when
theyre tactile. She used a James Dunlop woven
outdoor fabric on one of the custom-designed Sharp
& Page sofas so the children dont need to be too
precious about it. A house is a home at the end of
the day and it needs to be able to be used, she says.

ingers-friendly.
Another interesting illusion of texture can
be found on the litis wallpaper from the Pleats
collection that hangs loor-to-ceiling on the stairwell
wall joining the lower, middle and upper levels of
the house. It resembles folded sheets of brown paper
decorated with images of nature and birds.
Unsurprisingly in a home belonging to a master
cabinetmaker, the cabinets are real talking points. In
the upstairs and downstairs lounges, matching Sharp
& Page cabinets feature a lustrous santos palisander
veneer a wonderful example of old workmanship
in a modern context. Its a lovely, rich material
that is not often used as it tends to be expensive,
explains Alice. Sharp & Page laid it out at diferent
angles to create a three-dimensional shape. But it
is the kitchen that is the real pice de rsistance. All
appliances, except the oven and induction hob, are
hidden in high lacquer white or dark brown cabinets.
A key thing for a kitchen is having generous space
between working surfaces. Were future-prooing
for teenagers to be able to share the space, says
Alice. Cool drawers inside the large Italian marbletopped central island hide sparkling water and beer,
while others conceal platters and china that arent
used every day. Electric candles provides mood
lighting for litis foam wallpaper framed by Sharp
& Page to create French-style panelling inspired
by a deRothschild villa they once visited in the
South of France. I love bringing elements that have
inluenced me from architecture and painting to life
in a New Zealand context, says Alice.
Glass panels separate the kitchen from the openplan dining room, where an antique table that once
belonged to Adams parents has been modernised
with high gloss black lacquer and is ofset by
geometric matte black Matisse chairs.
A diferent kind of panel can be found above the
bed in the master bedroom. Alice asked Sharp & Page
to frame a piece of wallpaper by Nina Campbell and
then mounted a pair of Porta Romana sconces that
look like the branches of a tree. Adam mostly goes
along with it all, she smiles. I am pretty lucky to have
someone who realises my design ideas.
The Sharps home will be open to visitors on November 18

Handle-free designs dominated the recent EuroCucina kitchen fair in Milan. Here, we get the lowdown on
this minimalist trend and how to incorporate it into your kitchen with the latest innovations from Blum.

What does Blum do and what is your philosophy?

On the surface Blum manufacturers and sells hinges, lifts and
drawer systems, but beneath the surface it is so much more than
that. Were constantly on the lookout for ways to improve the
ergonomics, comfort and enjoyment in a kitchen; adding value
to and enhancing the experience in the kitchen is our goal.
Where did the trend for handle-free kitchens come from?
The kitchen is now an integral part of the home and our openplan living space, so consumers want previously segmented
spaces to blend together harmoniously and this has resulted in
kitchens that look more like itted furniture.
What are the latest trends to come from EuroCucina?
Everything was integrated even ovens were hidden away.
Fridges, freezers, dishwashers, and all other appliances were
tucked out of sight behind minimalist cabinet fronts with either
no handle and a push-to-open mechanism, or a rebated inger
pull or some other subtle opening mechanism.
What opening mechanisms has Blum developed?

We have three diferent motion technologies for a completely
handle-free design: Servo-Drive, Tip-On, and Tip-On
Blumotion. Servo-Drive is electronic and can be itted to the
entire kitchen or just on frequently used pull-outs, such as
rubbish bins. You simply press on the cabinet front you want to
open, then close again with a light push. Tip-On is our pushto-open and push-to-close mechanism, which is great for
cupboard doors and overhead cabinets. Tip-On Blumotion is
our latest innovation for drawers and pull-outs. It is 100 per cent
mechanically operated and also push-to-open and soft-close.

Colourful
The classic white bathroom still has its place in the home
but there are myriad ways to inject some colour and fun
into your space. If you have a freestanding cast-iron tub,
you could have it repainted in a colour of your choice. You
can also use bathroom-friendly wallcoverings or wallpaper
to amp up the interest. When choosing your colour palette,
use the rule of three: one neutral colour, one bold and one
accent. Use the neutral over 70 per cent of the space and
the other two colours for the remaining 30 per cent.

This award-winning design proves you

THE BRIEF
The brief given to expert kitchen and bathroom
designer Celia Visser for her clients city townhouse
was clear: a combined bathroom and laundry
that was innovative, aesthetically minimalist and
sophisticated. They also wanted to have a blissful
soak after a hard day at work, good storage and
practicality of the service areas.
CHALLENGES
The two major challenges were size constraints and
incorporating a utility room and luxe bathroom in
one. Visser brilliantly resolved the soaking challenge
by including an exterior spa bath which is accessed
directly through a glass door from the shower area.
THE INTEGRATED LAUNDRY

Appliances are hidden inside the single vertical
unit. The striking horizontal lines of the bespoke
Corian vanity in Corian Designer White with its
seamlessly formed Corian basin, Corian door fronts
and electric cabinetry are enhanced by elongated
mirrored cabinets holding generous amounts of
storage. Corian Designer White is a very clean
black white perfect for this streamlined space.

The Corian vanity top and door fronts were
fabricated and installed by experts from Topline
Benches a favourite with designers due to the
absolute care they take to deliver a great outcome.

deinitely more. More subtle dimensions
are in, says colourist Jennifer Morgan,
co-owner of Morgan and Morgan in
Auckland. Here, three hair professionals
give us the inside scoop on the seasons
chicest shades.
For the ultimate in winter chic, opt

forpink undertones to your colour.
Ifyou have a warmer complexion think
about a rose gold or rose copper hue,
suggests Morgan. Not too light, not too
dark, and with the perfect pink copper
relection, this is a skin-lattering shade
that will warm up your complexion
easily. A new take on the redhead,
this lighter colour with a subtle hint of
rose pops nicely against a dark winter
wardrobe. If your skintone is cooler,
imagine the perfect rose mahogany,
says Morgan. Once youve had your
newcolour done, prevent fading with
anat-home enhancer and protector.

THE BLEND TREND

The ombre trend is here to stay, but this
season the look will be more seamless,
says Chinney Yeap from Buoy Salon and
Spa in Wellington. Theres deinitely
no place for stripes or severe two-tone
balayage, it should look like multi-tonal
natural hair. The new buzzword this
winter is sombre, which is a soft, subtle
ombre that typically blends higher up to
achieve a more natural look, says Yeap.
However, the ends remain light, with
only subtle hints of dimensional darkness
going through. For a look that will grow
out subtly, ask for a number of shades
and tones in the same colour family to be
weaved throughout your hair. Whether
you are blonde, brunette or a redhead,
this will add shimmering dimension and
texture to your tresses.
AUTUMNAL AUBURN
BLONDE AMBITION
To add depth and richness to your hair,

try adding some warmer colours on the
roots and pull some pieces through to the
ends, says Danny Pato, creative director
and co-owner of D&M Hair Design in
Auckland. This gives the appearance of
two diferent tones, without lightening
the hair. Refresh trending copper
and deep auburn tones at home with
Schwarzkopf s new wash-out mousse.

this seasons take on blonde rests
somewhere in the middle and it looks
gorgeous when it catches the light.
This sought-after colour is generally
achieved with a blend of highlights and
lowlights artfully applied to complement
the natural undertones of your skin.
But remember, good things take time.
To ensure lightened locks look healthy
and shiny, Pato recommends Olaplex.
When it is added to bleach or colour, it
protects and repairs hair at a molecular
level, helping to prevent damage, he
says. Other than the expertise of your
professional colourist, the only thing to
help protect hair fully when lightening
is Olaplex. To maintain blonde hair at
home use a purple-tinted shampoo or
conditioner to neutralise any brassiness,
and an intense conditioning treatment,
such as Olaplex No 3, once a week to
ensure your hair stays in optimum
condition between salon visits.

1 Combine zaatar and toasted almonds. Place rocket

PULLED PORK
2 tsp fennel seeds
1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme
2 tbsp good-quality smoked
paprika
2 tbsp sea salt
3kg pork shoulder (approx),
bone in, preferably free-range
6 cloves garlic
1 onion, peeled and diced
1 carrot, diced
ROMESCO
4 red capsicums
1 tomato
4 cloves garlic
1 red onion, skin removed
and quartered
2 slices white bread
cup blanched whole
almonds

30ml red wine vinegar
125ml olive oil

TO SERVE
1 loaf bread
Fresh garden leaves
Good-quality olive oil
Juice of 1 lemon
1 Combine fennel seeds, thyme,
smoked paprika and salt and rub
all over the pork. Cover and
refrigerate for 1-2 hours, or
preferably overnight.
2 Preheat the oven to 200C.

Place spiced pork shoulder in a
deep casserole dish. Cover the
pork with water and add garlic,
onion and carrot. Cover the dish
with greaseproof paper, then
tightly wrap foil over the top.
Cook in the oven for 1 hour.
3 Reduce oven to 160C and
continue cooking pork for 3-3
hours until tender and pulling
easily off the bone. Remove
from the oven and shred.
4 For the romesco, preheat oven
to 180C. Place capsicums in an
oven tray with the tomato, garlic
and red onion. Roast for 15
minutes. Remove tray from oven.
5 Add bread and almonds to
tray. Return to oven for 5-6
minutes ensuring almonds dont
burn. Remove tray and cool.
6 Peel skin off capsicums and
remove seeds, keeping only
WKHpHVK
7 Remove the tough core from
the tomato. Squeeze garlic from
skin. Place cooled ingredients
along with the remainder of the
ingredients in a food processor,
and pulse until you have a rough
pesto-like consistency; dont
overblend into a pure.
8 To serve, pile the pulled pork
onto sliced bread on individual
plates. Add a good dollop of
romesco and top with garden
leaves dressed with olive oil and
lemon juice.
Leftover romesco sauce can be
kept in the fridge for up to a
week and is great with chicken
and seafood.

1 tbsp vegetable oil
200g crme frache (thick
sour cream)
40 mint leaves (1 loose
handful), shredded
1 Boil the potatoes in lightly
salted water until almost done
(when you can insert a knife
through them). Add the peas
and cook for an additional
2 minutes. Drain into a
colander and run cold water
over them for a few minutes,
then drain again.
2 While the potatoes are
cooking, saut the shallots in

the oil with a teaspoon of
salt over medium heat,
stirring frequently, until
caramelised and slightly crisp.
Tip into a bowl and stir in the
crme frache.
3 Tip the potatoes and peas
into a large bowl and add the
shallots and the mint. Stir
together and taste for
seasoning. Transfer into a
clean bowl to serve.

1 Preheat the oven to 160C.

2 Cut the carrots on the diagonal you
want about 3 pieces from each carrot.
Brush a large roasting tray with some of
the olive oil and spread out the carrots.
Now pour in some more olive oil and use
your hands to mix it through until the
carrots are coated all over. Sprinkle with
salt and pepper. Pour a 2mm layer of
water into the tray, then cover with foil
and roast in the oven for 30 minutes.

When the carrots are almost done,
remove foil and cook for a further 10
minutes, until caramelised.
3 Bring a largish saucepan of water to the
boil and add the quinoa. Cook until
tender (10-15 minutes). The quinoa is
cooked once it puffs up and becomes
translucent. Once cooked, drain water
and leave to cool.
4 Spread rocket evenly between four
plates, laying it to the edges. Tear
radicchio into pieces and scatter over the
rocket. Sprinkle over a little salt. Place a
cup of cooked quinoa in the middle of
each plate on top of the rocket and
radicchio. Spoon a good 1 tablespoons
of miso dressing (see recipe, below right)
on top of the quinoa, then place 5 or 6
carrot pieces around this.
5 Put a small pan with olive oil on
medium heat. When the pan is quite hot,
slice halloumi into thick strips and brown
in the pan on both sides.
6 Divide halloumi between the salads,
placing the slices in between the carrots.
7 Serve with sliced avocado, if desired.

5 To make the icing, combine butter and cream
cheese in a bowl and beat with an electric
beater until smooth. Beat in lemon zest and
add enough icing sugar to make the icing stiff

6 This cake keeps well for up to three days,
iced and stored in a cake tin or airtight
container in a cool pantry.

THE SEINE
A river cruise from Paris to the beaches of Normandy
introduces Pamela Wade to magniicent scenery,
sobering history and delicious local cuisine.
he Englishman making himself a cup of tea in the

Club Lounge sighed heavily. Its been such a long
day, he said. We had to leave London so early to
get here. And then theres the time change!
I left him mournfully stirring his tea and
continued exploring our new home for the next eight days. The
Tapestry II is a river cruiser belonging to Avalon Waterways and
her patch is the Seine, between Paris and the Normandy region
in north-western France. My journey from New Zealand had
been somewhat longer than the weary Londoners, but I knew
it would be worth it. Launched in 2015, the Tapestry II is full of
luxurious comforts enjoyed by just 128 passengers in her all-suite
accommodation. The biggest on the water, these suites are unique
in having the beds facing panoramic windows, allowing for surely
the laziest sight-seeing ever.

Not that I spent much

time in my suite. In this
respect, river cruising is less
relaxing than its ocean-going
equivalent, for the simple
reason that there is always
something to see. Thats the
problem with 360-degree
scenery: obsessive types like
me are always afraid theyre
missing something and the
endless parade of pretty
villages, farmland, woods
and hills, a cast of waving
ishermen and dog-walkers, and a soundtrack of birdsong, lapping
water and chiming clocks, had me spinning like a top.
I soon gave in to the challenge of seeing as much as possible
and the standard was set high right from the start. The garden at
Claude Monets house in Giverny is a dazzling celebration of his
art. As local guide Marie-Hlne explained, Monet considered
this garden his greatest masterpiece and in real life, his muchpainted lily ponds are simply gorgeous, surrounded by roses,
hollyhocks, azaleas, and sweet Williams, the Japanese bridges over
the water dripping with wisteria. Inside his house, I was delighted
to discover that he and I share a bright yellow dining room but
while I stopped at the walls, his professional boldness with colour
extended also to the table, chairs, dressers and sideboards. Colour
followed him to the end, Marie-Hlne declared, telling how his
body lay in state in his bedroom, draped not in black, which he
never used, but in patterned curtains from the house, pulled down
by his friend, prime minister Georges Clemenceau.

centuries of complicated history. In Normandy that includes

Vikings, Richard the Lionheart, Joan of Arc, Napoleon, and D-Day
all of them bringing both glory and misery to the land.
At Les Andelys, the beautiful castle shining white on its green
hilltop above the river was where sheltering townspeople were
evicted by soldiers during a winter siege in 1203 as les bouches
inutiles (useless mouths) and left to die of starvation and cold in
the moat outside, trapped by the enemy.
The city of Rouen is a riot of colourful, medieval half-timbered
buildings, but its two main attractions are the site where Joan of
Arc was burnt at the stake, and its ancient cathedral, which was
severely damaged by the 6,000 bombs that fell on the city in 1944.
Its at the D-Day landing beaches, of course, where the shadows
of the past fall most darkly over Normandys green landscape,
its little towns each with a memorial cross and stories to tell.
Passengers were taken by coach to either the American or Allied
sections of the coastline, to sandy beaches with resonant names:

Omaha, Utah, Juno. We went to Arromanches to see the concrete
remnants of Mulberry harbour, visited museums and stood on the
clif where the sides of bomb craters are now velvety with grass
but the bottoms are shockingly deep. We went to the cemeteries
and looked out over the graves, the straight lines of the headstones
bringing order now to what was chaos, fear and courage.
It made for a long and sobering day; but the cruise has plenty
of delights as well. Even in the rain Theres a reason why
Normandy is so green, city guide Stphanie told us cheerfully
Honleur was glorious. Tall, narrow houses surround a small
harbour bristling with the masts of yachts and narrow cobbled
streets wind up the hill past inviting little boutiques to the unusual
double-nave church of St Catherine.
Bayeux would have warranted a visit even without its famous
tapestry, chainches trilling in neatly pollarded trees, a little river

running past water mills, the domes and buttresses of its cathedral
worthy of a much bigger city. We saw the local version of thatched
cottages, the ridges held together by the roots of lowering irises.
Beuvron-en-Auge was outrageously, over-the-top pretty, dazzling
with colourful half-timbering.
And then there was the food. When you are angry, you must
heat! said guide Estelle, in charmingly accented English. And
eat, we did. Local cheeses
Camembert, Pont lvque,
Livarot and crpes, cider and
Calvados, home-made quiche,
six-hour rice pudding, and lamb
raised on the salt marshes. Some
of it was at markets from local
producers, some served by our
hostess Madame Franoise in
her Beuvron summerhouse,
most of it in Tapestry IIs
own dining room, where
waiters Tiago and Shady had
a refreshing disregard for the
reined half-glass pour and illed
our wineglasses to the brim.
We have so much of it! they cried.
The pice de rsistance was Paris: Notre Dame, Versailles,
Montmartre, the Louvre, and the Eifel Tower scintillating in
the dark, as the guide so aptly described it. Our last night took us to
the Moulin Rouge, where the expected topless dancers with their
feathers and slick routines were supplemented by unexpected, and
astonishing, variety acts: acrobats defying gravity, roller skaters
defying physics, aquatic pythons defying their handlers and
escaping from their water tank.
I hope the Englishman thought the cruise was worth his epic
journey; I know I did.
