Overview

2 Overview
The Flexi Outdoor Case (FOC) is an outdoor case able to contain one indoor unit 2 U (2
standard units) high or, alternatively, up to 2 indoor units with 1U high each.

Figure 2

FOC overview

The following Nokia Siemens Network microwave IDUs have been tested and verified
the feasibility of being installed inside the FOC.

FIU 19E
SARL XD
FlexiMetro
FlexiHybrid
A-1200
FlexiPacket Hub (eg. FirstMile 200)

In addition, the power injector can also be installed in the FOC.

Also any other 19 indoor unit with the heat generation which is less than, or equal to
135 W, can be installed inside the FOC. However, the feasibility, cabling solution,
thermal functionality, etc. must be tested and verified before installation.
The IDU(s) can be installed in the FOC using mechanical adapters for standard 19 rack
interface.
The single cable suitable for outdoor used is specified in FOC Installation and Maintenance customer documentation.
FOC is completely compatible with FlexiBTS, which is stackable and pole mountable as
any FlexiBTS module with same FlexiBTS mounting parts.

For detailed information, refer to FOC Installation and Maintenance customer Documentation.

4.2
4.2.1

Limitations for appliances

Mechanical sizes
IDUs can be either 1 or 2 standard units high (1 U = 44.45 mm). Maximum width = 483
mm including the external width of a standard 19" rack.

Keep in mind that adapters for standard 19" interface are needed, thus the appliance
shall have to be narrower.
Maximum depth = 252 mm if internal fans unit has to be equipped, otherwise it will be
315 mm. These values are valid in the case the adapters for standard 19" interface are
mounted to be perfectly in line with the front panel of the IDU.

g
4.2.2

Please note that 65 mm will be available in this condition between the IDU front panel
and the Fan Controller Board. Make sure that enough space for cable connectors and
cable themselves, depending on how many cables are used and the connector types.

Electrical limitations
The maximum power required by each connector will be equal to 200 W. Higher power
must be considered as temporarily abnormal condition due to failure of one of the two
sources, and the faulty power source will have to be replaced as soon as possible.

4.2.3

Applications

Power consumption and fans

The total power consumption of the IDU(s) hosted in the FOC is lower than 135 W. No
internal fans (in the IDU) are necessary if its sub-rack allows a good air flow when the
IDU power consumption is lower than 60 W. In case of power consumption higher than
60 W, fans mounted inside the FOC usually are not enough to take away all the heat,
so fans internal to the IDU are necessary.

The main functions of the Fan Controller Board are:

WARNINGS: Fuse protection works only with common positive terminal configurations. The positive terminal of the primary supply may or may not be grounded but
the negative terminal should never be connected to ground.
The allowable voltage range is from -40.5 V to -57 V and the latter value should
never be exceeded. The power inputs are equipped with varistors to protect electronics and fans from electrical surge voltages. It is vital that the cover plate which is
equipped with two ground wires are intact and that the whole outdoor box installation
is grounded properly to allow these protectors to work properly. The primary power
supply lines must be equipped with proper fuses to protect power inlet cables from
short circuit and thermal overload.

5.2

Power distribution to all the equipped units, including fans, heaters, IDUs and ODUs.
Each power input/output is protected via suitable fuse.

Heating and cooling systems control (fan speed control and heater current control).
Alarms detection in case of fan failure, and alarm transmission to the IDU alarm
input.

Total power load ? 415 W, since heating and cooling system are never both on.
Due to the figures above stated, each main power input (B1 and B2) is designed to withstand the maximum power of 500 W.
1+1 powering protection (B1 and B2) is used for powering both the heating system and
the cooling system.
The 1+1 powering protection of the single IDU (with ODUs connected to it) can be
provided by using both FIU and Bx power outputs of the Fan Controller Board.
Each main input (B1 and B2) is used to power one (FIU + Bx) power output.
Several power supply options are allowed, but none of them can exceed the 500 W limit
per single Bx port.

Fan Controller Board, Power Consumptions, and Temperature Management

Product Description

The FOC will support also direct power distribution toward six ODUs. Each one has a
maximum power consumption fo 60 W. The six output lines will be shared between the
two input lines of the FOC, i.e, three ODUs will be fed by B1 whereas the other three
ODUs will be fed by B2; no 1+1 powering protection will be supported for these units.

The FOC can be powered by many power modules (e.g. Flexi Power Module FPMA,
Flexi Rectifier Module 6000 FRMB/C). Pay attention to the necessary power amount
when equipping the FOC, in order to choose the proper power module; in case a limited power module is available, attention must be paid to power consumption of FOC
and other appliances powered by the FOC.

5.3

Coolling system control

Two microswitches I1 and I2 are present on the Fan Controller Board:
Microswitch I1 (TR1)
INTERNAL FAN CONTROLL ON: the internal fans are controlled by the circuit and the
rotation speed depends on the temperature (default)
INTERNAL FAN CONTROLL OFF : the rotation speed of the internal fans is not controlled by the circuit and the speed is always set to MAX (independent from the temperature)
Microswitch I2 (TR7)
+VB OPEN: the parallel connection of +VB of the two batteries is floating (configurable
by user)
+VB CONNECT TO GND : the parallel connection of +VB of the two batteries is connected to ground (default)

Figure 17

Fan Controller Board: Microswitch

There are two kinds of alarms: E_ALM and C_ALM. Followings are the definitions:
E_ALM reports the operating status of the external fan group. In case at least one of
the external FANs (two concurring physical items) is not operating properly, the alarm is
active (the alarm line is connected to GND). The alarm is managed during the ON
