If a mixed flow reactor of 10 times as large as the PFR is hooked up in parallel with the existing unit, by what fraction could the production be increased for the same 96% conversion? (08) A first order reaction is to be treated in a series of three mixed flow reactors. Find the ratio of the volume of the three reactors when the total volume of the three reactors is minimum. Assumptions: Constant density system; Isothermal operation; Steady operation. (10) Derive the performance equation of a Recycle Reactor for an isothermal liquid phase second order reaction 24—+ products. Find out te optimum recycie ratio which minimizes the reactor volume or space time. (18) The acid catalyzed second order irreversible liquid phase reaction A-» B is carried out adiabatically in a CSTR. The reaction is second order in A. The feed, which is equimolar in a solvent (which contains the catalyst) and A, enters the reactor at a total volumetric flow rate of 150 ce/s with the concentration of A being 6M. The entering temperature is 300 K. What CSTR reactor volume is necessary to achieve 90% conversion? Derive the necessary performance equationS for an adiabatic CSTR. Additional Information: AHlgx (300K) = -3300 cal/mol.°C; Cpa = 15 cal/mol.°C; Cpg = 15 cal/mol.°C; Cps cacig) = 18 cal/mol.°C; k(300K) = 0.0005 dm’/mol.min; E = 15000 cal/mol. (14) The oxidation of A to form B is carried out on a catalyst. Unfortunately B is also oxidized on this catalyst to form C. The reaction is carried out in a three fald excess of oxygen and in dilute concentration. Consequently the volume change with the reaction can be neglected. Determine the concentration of B as a function of space time. Both the reactions are irreversible. The reactions are 0 order in A and first order in B. Find out the reactor length, space time, conversion of A and yield of B under optimum conditions. (18) The decomposition of A produces R as foliows: AOR 1593-120 mu The following results are obtained in a series of steady state runs, all having no R in the feed stream. Space Time, t, see | C,,, In Feed, molditer | C,,, In Exit Stream, mol/liter 50 2.0 1.00 16 12 0.80 60 20 0.65 22 10 | 0.56 48 0.48 0.42 T2 10 0.37 40 0.48 0.28 12 0.48 0.20 From this kinetic information, find the size of the Plug Flow reactor needed to achieve 75% conversion of a feed stream of v= | liter/sec and Cy = 0.8 mol/liter. 4) c) At present conversion is 2/3 for our elementafy Second-order Tiquid reaction 24 + 2, when operating in an isothermal plug flow reactor with a recycle ratio of unity. What will be the conversion if the recycle stream is shut off? (06) d) The following reaction is carried out in a batch reactor in which there pure A initially present. Derive an equation for the concentration of A as a function of time. If k; = 0.01 s", what is the ratio Ca/Cao after 1.5 minutes. Derive a differential equation that gives the concentration of B as a function of time. (12) ke ks A>B—>D ky c 1513 - 120 a Ref. No. Ex./CR.EVT/B312/4/2013 3" Year Chemical Engg.
