Using chainnose pliers, make a small bend in each wire end so they form a right angle. ‘Wrap the horizontal wire around the vertical wire asin a wrapped Toop. Trim the excess wrapping wire. Make a wrapped loop with the vertical wire, directly above these weaps, STITCHES AND THREAD Conditioning thread Use either beeswax (not candle wax or paraffin) or Thread Heaven 10 condition nylon theead (Nymo). Beeswax smooths the nylon fibers and adds tackiness char will stiffen your beadwork slightly. Theead Heaven adds a static charge that causes the thread to repel itself, so don’t use it with doubled thread. Stretch the thread, then pall it through the conditioner, starting with she end that comes off the spool first Ending/adding thread ‘To end a thread, weave back into the beadwork, following the existing thread path and cying cwo or these half-hitch Ienots around the thread between beads 45 you go. Change directions as you weave so the thread erosses tell. Sew through a few beads after the last knot before cutting the thread To add a thread, stact several rows ptlor to the point where the last bead was added. Weave through the beadwork, tying hal-hitch knots as you 80, and exit where you let aff ‘Stop bead Use a stop bead to secure beads temporarily when you begin stitching. Choose a bead that eo is distinctly diferent from the beads in your project. String the stop bead about 6 in. (15em) from the end of your thread, and go back through it in the same ditection. If desired, go through ir ‘one more time for added security. Brick stitch ‘Work off a stitched ladder (see Ladder stitch). Pick up two beads. Sew tndec the thread bridge between the second and third beads on the ladder from back to front. Sew up the second bead added and then down the first. Come back up the second bead, For the row's remaining stitches, pick ‘up one bead. Sew under the next thread bridge on the previous row from back to front, Sew back up the new bead. aa %, & Ladder stitch There are several ‘ways to work a ladder, The ‘eomanon way is to pick up two beads, sow through the first bead again, and then sew through the second bead {eb} Ada subsequent beads by picking up ‘one bead, sewirg through the previous bead and then sewing through the new bead (&-<). Continue forthe desired length, ‘While chis isthe most common technique, it produces uneven tension along the ladder of beads because of the slcernating partern of a single thread bridge on the edge between tw0 beads and a double thread bridge on the ‘opposite edge between the same £0) beads. You can easily correct the uneven tension by zigeaging back throogh the beads inthe opposite direction. Doing this creates a double thread path along both edges of the ladder. This aligns the beads right next to each other but fills the bead holes with extra thread, which can cause a problem if you are using beads wih small holes ‘When you're using ladder stitch to create a base for brick stitch, having the holes filled with thread doesn't matter ‘because the ros of brick stitch are ‘worked off the thread bridges, sor by sewing through the beads. If you're using the ladder asa base for Ndebele hestingbone stitch, extra thread is potentially problematic, because you'll 'be sewing through che ladder base more than once. ‘There are two altemate methods for ‘working ladder stitch, each of which produces beadwork with even tension. For the first, center bead ona nny with a needle length of thread. atrachied to each end. Pick up a bead with onc nesdle, and cross the other needle through it @-b ant! e-d), Add all subsequent beads in the same manner, —— “To begin the other alternative method, pick up all the beads you need to eeach the length your pattern requires, Fold the last two beads so they are parallel, and sew through the sccond-tn:last bead again in the same direction (a-b). Fold the next loose bead so it sits parallel to the previous bead in the ladder, and sew through the loose bead in the same direction (ab). Continue sewing. back through each bead until you exit the last bead of the ladder = [you are working in cubular brick lor Ndebele herringbone site, sew your ladder into a ring to provide a base for the new technique, With your thread exiting the last bead in your ladder, sew throogh the first head and then back through the last bead, or cross the needles through the firs bead if you are using the crossweave technique. You may choose to hide the edge thread by picking up an accent or smaller bead before you sew back through the last bead of the pair you just added. wee UHROGVEO gwvveuvuVE Basics To make a turn without baving thread show om the edge or adding an edge bead, sew down through the tend bead in the previous row and up through the second-to-last bead in the previous row, and continue through the last bead added (a-b). Ndebele herringbone: tubular To work tubular Naebele herring bone, you ean stare wich either aring ora ladder. To start with a ring, pick up the desired number of beads, and tie the tail and working thread together to forma circle. To start with a ladder (see Ladder stitch), use an even number of beads, and stitch the first bead to the last bead to forma ring Pick up two beads, and go through the next bead on the previous row (the ladder). Come up through the next bead, and repeat. There will be two stitches when you've gone down through the fourth bead (a-b). You need to work a step-up to be in position ro start the next row. To do this, come up through the bead next to the one your needle is exiting and the first bead of the frst stitch in the rowr above (o-a).
