The basic function of the CRDI system is that the injection of the diesel
fuel is carried at the right moment, right quantity and also with the
required injection pressure.
CRDI system ensure that the diesel engine not only runs smoothly but also
economically.
The injected fuel quantity is defined by the driver through the Accelerator
pedal sensor and it is sensed when he presses the pedal.
Injection Pressure is generated with respect to the engine Speed & Load
The fuel is stored under pressure in the high pressure accumulator ( Rail) and
from there it is supplied to the injection nozzle.
Dr.K.Murugu Mohan Kumar

The pressure of the fuel is raised by a high pressure pump which gets
the drive from the engine camshaft through the toothed belt.

When the engine speed increases, the delivery pressure of the high
pressure pump also gets increased and with the same high pressure, the
fuel is delivered to the common rail.
Pressure generation (by the high pressure pump)and the fuel injection
(by triggering the solenoid) are completely decoupled from each other
The start of injection and injection pressure are calculated by the ECU
on the basis of the stored maps and it triggers the solenoid of the
Injector.
Rail pressure is different from injection pressure.

In the case of conventional injector, the injection

pressure is constant through out the operation of
engine for speed & Load variations, where as in the

CRDI system, the injection pressure is made to vary

continuously.

The above continuous variation is possible by varying

the spring force continuously by the opening of the
bleed orifice and in turn the fluid force on the Plunger

and finally the continuous variation in the Injection

pressure.

Dr.K.Murugu Mohan Kumar

More injection pressure leads to better atomization

and satisfied emission level.
Also, it has to be noted that in the case of
conventional injector, the spring force is adjusted by
the adjusting screw (if the spray pattern is not found
to be good) and even in that case, the injection
pressure is set for a particular value only
