This mechanism is common when pipelines carry higher levels of free-water production without means of water removal, or where fluid traps allow water and solids to accumulate. Vapor phase corrosion is a less frequent mechanism that has also caused failures, though many preventative measures against pitting corrosion will also mitigate vapor phase corrosion.
