Research and Development Intern at HelpAge USA

Job Summary:
HelpAge USA, the US affiliate of HelpAge International, a non-profit organization
focused on improving the needs of the worlds most vulnerable older people, is seeking
to fill a Research and Development internship position.
The position will involve growing HelpAges list of funding opportunities through
research, and some data entry to update HelpAges tracking systems. The intern will
work directly with the Director of Strategic Partnerships and Development and will
interact closely with the US-based team.
This is an ideal opportunity for an individual to gain direct, real world experience with
fundraising, including research on foundations, corporations, and individuals, which can
be used for future career opportunities in a nonprofit position that may require
development skills.
This unpaid internship is based in our offices in Washington DC and offered on a
voluntary basis for up to three months, with a possibility of extension during the
following semester. Ideally, the intern will be able to work for HelpAge USA on a parttime basis (10 to 25 hours per week), including some research that may be conducted
remotely. [Credit for this internship can be considered, based on your own universitys
policies.]
Duties and Responsibilities:

Enroll in free, locally-available classes to learn about the basics of


fundraising/research on foundations, corporations, and individuals, as well as
other more specific classes on international giving, online donations, as
available.
Assist with research on potential foundations and identify funding.
opportunities using the web and the Foundation Center online research tool.
Make calls to get contact details of Program Officers and key people.
Update Foundation tracking reports to reflect research.
Update HelpAges pipeline report to track status of grants.
Use database to track donations and add contacts and opportunities.
Assist in key administrative functions when necessary.

Qualifications and Skills:

Very good organizational and internet research skills.


Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong computer skills; experience using Salesforce or other CRM application
desirable.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
Enthusiastic and self-motivated work style with high attention to detail.
Ability to multi-task, work independently, and in a team environment.
Previous experience in non-profit management, development and fundraising
highly desirable, but not necessary.
Interest in international humanitarian work a plus.
