Adiplexerisapassivedevicethatimplementsfrequencydomainmultiplexing.Twoports(e.g.,LandH)are
multiplexedontoathirdport(e.g.,S).ThesignalsonportsLandHoccupydisjointfrequencybands.
Consequently,thesignalsonLandHcancoexistonportSwithoutinterferingwitheachother.
Typically,thesignalonportLwilloccupyasinglelowfrequencybandandthesignalonportHwilloccupya
higherfrequencyband.Inthatsituation,thediplexerconsistsofalowpassfilterconnectingportsLandSand
highpassfilterconnectingportsHandS.Ideally,allthelowbandsignalpoweronportListransferredtotheS
portandviceversa.AllthehighbandsignalpoweronportHistransferredtoportSandviceversa.Ideally,the
separationofthesignalsiscomplete.NoneofthelowbandsignalistransferredfromtheLporttotheHport.
Intherealworld,somepowerwillbelost,andsomesignalpowerwillleaktothewrongport.
Thediplexer,beingapassivedevice,isnormallyreciprocal:thedevice
itselfdoesn'thaveanotionofinputoroutput.Howeverpoorlydesigned
diplexersmayhavedifferingimpedanceonvariousports,soitshouldnot
simplybeassumedthatanysuchdeviceisfullyreciprocalunlessitis
statedorthereturnlossmeasured.
Thediplexerisadifferentdevicethanapassivecombinerorsplitter.The
portsofadiplexerarefrequencyselectivetheportsofacombinerare
not.Thereisalsoapower"loss"differenceacombinertakesallthe
powerdeliveredtotheSportandequallydividesitbetweentheAandB
ports.Adiplexerdoesnot.

Adiplexerfrequencymultiplexestwoportsontooneport,butmorethan
twoportsmaybemultiplexed.Athreeporttooneportmultiplexerisknownasatriplexer,andafourportto
oneportmultiplexerisaquadplexerorquadruplexer.
Theaccepteddefinitionofadiplexerisadevicethathasaround30dBisolationbetweenports.Thisismore
thanadequatetoprovideisolationbetweenportsincaseofsplittingamultibandantenna(30dBcoupling
betweendifferentantennasonamastisquitetypicalanyway).Howeveritisinsufficienttoallowreceptionand
transmissionuponeantennaatthesametime,thisdeviceisknownasadu
