River of LifeSteven Reineke
River of Life by Steven Reineke was published in 1995. It creates a melody that sounds
like a flow of a relaxing river. In the beginning, it starts off with a gentle, flowing solo section
and quickly builds up speed. At measure 68, the piece moves into 2/2 time and it becomes a
more lyrical section. Toward the end of the piece, the tempo changes back to the original allegro
spirit.
Ghost Fleet..Robert Sheldon
Ghost Fleet is a piece composed by Robert Sheldon, written in 1999. Sheldon meant for
the piece to portray long forgotten warships and their spirits returning from days at sea. Sheldon
composed the piece to sound very mysterious though the use of slurs and accidentals to make a
ghostly vibe. It starts off peaceful and slowly gets more dramatic through the addition of more
instruments when the ships are anchored. It then explodes in a heroic ending of the fleets return
to the high seas and their glory days.

Wind Ensemble
At the Strongholds of En GediDavid R. Holsinger
Kayla Mauk, Conductor
At the Strongholds of En Gedi was composed by David R. Holsinger for the Mount
Saint Charles Academy Music Department in 1995. Holsinger was inspired by the Old
Testaments first book of Samuel, in which King Saul pursued David. David was to flee to a city,
but was warned against it, so instead he sought shelter in the caves of En Gedi. It was in these
caves that David had the opportunity to kill King Saul as he rested, but instead chose to spare his
life. King Saul then reconciled with David and returned home. However, David and his
followers chose to remain within the caves of En Gedi. David Holsingers compositions have
won four major competitions, including two ABA Ostwald Awards, and have been finalists in
the DeMoulin and Sudler competitions. He guest conducted Horseheads ensembles in 2008.

Illyrian DancesGuy Woolfenden

Mr. Collin Smith, Conductor
Illyrian Dances was commissioned by the British Association of Symphonic Bands and
Wind Ensembles, although some of the thematic material for this suite of three dances is adapted
from music originally written for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Illyria is in essence
Neverland, in other words not a real place. Shakespeare mentioned Illyria in one of his
plays, and the composer was intrigued with the idea of inventing dances for such a place.
Illyrian Dances first premiered on September 26th, 1986 at Warwick University. It is composed
of three movements. The first is a seven bar refrain with a very unique rhythmic twist,
showcasing the band in its variations. The second is a gentle dance, highlighting the flute section.
The third is a rondo in six-eight time, using a recurring theme to profile variations and
counterpoints.
Italian PolkaSergei Rachmaninoff
Italian Polka was composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff for piano in 1906, but was scored
for concert band in 1941 by Erik W.G. Leidzen. This piece utilizes a very passionate and
expressive sense of musical identity, and sumptuous harmonies and intricate textures blend to
create this incredibly lyrical piece.

Composers
Steven Reineke
Steven Reineke was born on September 14, 1970 in Tipp City, Ohio. He is a conductor
and composer who plays the trumpet and the piano. He has been active since 1995 and
still is to this day. Reineke started to develop his musical talents on trumpet at an early
age and taught himself how to play the piano at fifteen. Reineke continued to study the
trumpet at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned two Bachelor of Music
degrees with honors in trumpet performance and music composition. Steven Reineke
became the Musical Director of the New York Pops in 2009. He conducts the orchestra at
Carnegie Hall for tours, recordings, and telecasts. Reineke was nominated Principal Pops
Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra and started his season in 2011. In 2009 he
debuted with Boston Pops and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He also conducted the National Taiwan Symphony. In
2008 Reineke conducted in Carnegie Hall for the New York Pops 25th Birthday Gala. In addition, Reineke
conducted, arranged and orchestrated the music for Wayne Bradys orchestral show and did the same in
collaboration with Peter Frampton.
David R. Holsinger
David R. Holsinger was born on December 26, 1945 in the town of Hardin, Missouri.
In 1999, following 16 years of service as a music minister and worship leader to the
Shady Grove Parish in Grand Prairie, Texas, he relocated to Cleveland, Tennessee to

teach conducting and composition at Lee University. He holds various degrees from Central Methodist University
in Fayette, Missouri, University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, and the University of Kansas in Lawrence. In
addition to his university studies, Holsinger spends much of his time appearing at many All- State music
organizations and bands nationwide as a guest composer and conductor. In his spare time, he builds model trains.
Holsinger is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, and has won four national competitions, including
a two ABA Ostwald awards. Also, his works have reached finals in the NBA and Sudler composition competitions.

Guy Woolfenden
Born in Ipswich, England, Guy Woolfenden is the composer of Illyrian Dances. Woolfenden
was born on July 12, 1937, and died April 15, 2016. Woolfenden was a very accomplished
composer, having written over 150 scores for the Royal Shakespeare Company alone. He's
credited for his contribution to plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Henry IV, The Comedy of
Errors, and Sweet Swan of Avon. The Royal Shakespeare Company was so impressed with his
work, he composed for them in 1966, and was even awarded with the title of their Honorary
Associate Artist. Woolfenden was also known for using other means and sounds in his
pieces, such as blowing up empty crisp packets and manipulating the recording to create a
certain sound. Illyrian Dances has three movements, each with their own sound and feeling.

Sergei Rachmaninoff
Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff, was born in Semyonovo, Russia, on April 1, 1873. As
a young boy Rachmaninoff's mother began incubating his musical talent by teaching him
piano with the help of a musician hired from St. Petersburg, Anna Ornatskyaya. As a
result of economic problems, Sergei and his family moved to St. Petersburg, Russia. It
was here he began his training with Vladimir Delyansky. As a musician with exceptional
talent, Sergei went to the Moscow Conservatory, and received piano lessons from
Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti. Zverev's strict and grueling instruction helped
Sergei develop the talent and work ethic he carried with him throughout his career. The
performance of his first symphony was a disaster and sent Sergei into a depression, and his was unable to write for
three years. Eventually, he was cured by hypnotic therapy, and began work on his second concerto. By the end of
1910, Sergei had made his first American tour and was popular in the United States. He continued to live in Russia
until he left permanently during the Revolution of 1917. Until his death, Rachmaninoff lived alternatively between
Switzerland and the United States. In 1943, Sergei died in Beverly Hills, California at the age of 70. A few weeks
before his death, Sergei Rachmaninoff became an American citizen.

Marching Band 2016

Marching band at Horseheads High School is a great experience for band students. This
season, all sections will have once a week evening rehearsals in July to get a head start on music.
The season officially begins with Pre-Week in mid-August, followed by Band Camp the
following week. This year Band Camp will be August 20-25 (Sunday off)! During Band Camp
the entire ensemble learns drill, and memorizes music. We add colorguard work, flags, props,
and lots of technique into the mix as well. As the school year begins, the band moves to a
Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday practice schedule. Horseheads 2016 Marching Band show is
Scheherazade, a tale from The Arabian Nights. The Horseheads Marching Band will be facing
fierce competition from multiple schools throughout New York State. We perform in places as
far as Central North Syracuse and Victor, to as close as our own home football field during
Homecoming and other games. At the end of every marching band season we travel to Syracuse
Universitys Carrier Dome to compete in the Large School 2 field band championships (and
A&W Root Beer on the way back!).

Scheherazade

(Artwork by MacKenzie OBrien)

The legend of Queen Scheherazade is both dark and enticing. King Shahryar of Persia
found out one day that his beloved wife had been unfaithful. Seeking revenge, the king vowed to
marry a new women each day and behead the previous days wife. The king nearly ran out of
women in the land to behead, Lady Scheherazade being one of the last ones to remain. Each
night, Lady Scheherazade would tell an adventurous story to the King without a resolution.
Upon sunrise, King Shahryar would ask the vizier to not murder the woman, as she had to finish
her story. This continued for a thousand and one nights, when the king finally decided to marry
the beautiful Scheherazade. Young women who had fled the kingdom returned once again, and
prosperity was returned to the land.

Reflections on the Year

Things got started for the band program over the summer with marching band. The band
was introduced to Mr. Smith, our new band director. Entering the season with challenging music
and guard work, and having graduated from Large School 3 to Large School 2, the marching
band entered an intimidating season but managed to place top six. Also, this year we acquired
new uniforms. Thanks to the help of many band parents, we were able to premiere these at the
Corning competition. Ultimately, this season was a stepping stone for further growth and
accomplishment.
This year, the Horseheads School District was also given the honor of being one of just
five districts in the United States to pilot the Dallas Brass Harmony Bridge Program. A total of
43 students from the high school (and many more from the Middle School and the Intermediate
School) were involved in the program this year. Those privileged to participate in Michael
Levines brainchild played fan favorites like America and Paw Paw Patch. In addition to
this benefit we were privileged to BRIDGE the generation gap and provide a much needed
service to this communitys elderly citizens.
To start out the year, five students attended the 2015 Junior High Area All-State and 22
students attended the Senior High Area All-State to play challenging music with other students
from the area. Three students were accepted into NYSSMA Conference All-State and two others
had the opportunity to play in the 2016 NYSBDA Honor Band. 46 students played a NYSSMA
solo this year and achieved exemplary scores.
The bands also performed their three annual concerts. Wind Ensembles December
concert featured the upbeat and catchy, Rakes of Mallow, the beautiful Australian carol, The
Sussex Mummers Christmas Carol, and a collaboration with the Middle School Choir in Pacem
Noel. Concert Band performed The Star-Spangled Banner, Finnish Folk Song Suite and Grand
March. Our March concert featured the epic Songs of the West, Sousas New Mexico March, and
Concert Band played LaPlantes Voyageurs. Rich Peng opened the concert by conducting the
Concert Band in Pulsation.
The band looks forward to another marching band season and hopes to achieve even
greater levels of musicianship with their new music, Scheherazade. The band plans on offering
more conducting opportunities to students, as well as bringing in previous Horseheads music
teachers as guest conductors for a Past, Present, and Future themed concert. Along with this,
the music department hopes to bring back district-wide music performances which will host
ensembles from all grade levels.
Im excited to have a story driven show and its interesting to have a guard emphasis Joshua Samodal
If I hadnt joined marching band, I would have never gotten a girlfriend! Isaac Rawcliffe
