1. Show that each of the relation R in the set A = {x Z : 0 x 12}, given by

(i) R = {(a, b) : |a b| is a multiple of 4}
(ii) R = {(a, b) : a = b}
is an equivalence relation. Find the set of all elements related to 1 in each case.

2. Show that the relation R in the set R of real numbers, defined as R = {(a, b) : a b2} is neither
reflexive nor symmetric nor transitive.
3. Show that the Signum Function f : R R, given by
1, if x > 0

f ( x) = 0, if x = 0
1, if x < 0

is neither one-one nor onto.

4. Find gof and fog, if
(i) f (x) = | x | and g(x) = | 5x 2 |

(ii) f (x) = 8x and g(x) = x .
5. Consider f : R+ [4, ) given by f (x) = x2 + 4. Show that f is invertible with the inverse f 1 of f given by
f 1(y) = y 4 , where R+ is the set of all non-negative real numbers.
