PUNAKHA DZONG

DEAR ADVENTURER
I invite you to join me for a high-altitude trekking adventure to explore the little-visited
Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Nearly unknown to Western travelers, Bhutan is a colorful
patchwork of striking images: yak herders, rhododendron forests, snowcapped peaks, alpine
meadows, rare birds and animals, ornate temples and colorful houses, monks turning prayer
wheels, and farmers working their plots of land. And, there is no better way to discover these
time-honored traditions and natural wonders than with our own two feet.

While preservation of traditions is a way of life in Bhutan—centuries-old dzongs, chortens,

and temples mark the countryside; skilled artisans maintain the techniques of their forebears;
and Bhutanese visual and performing arts are still deeply rooted in Buddhist philosophy—the
country’s politics are quite progressive. In fact, it is the only country in the world to adopt the
concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH), developed in an attempt to define an indicator
that measures quality of life more holistically than the standard gross national product.

Th is is no ordinary journey and is not for everyone. It requires stamina, a good sense of
humor, and an adventurous spirit. This is a pilgrimage back in time to places where determined
people live close to the heavens and keep their traditions alive. And, a destination where the
snowcapped peaks of the Himalayas appear so close, it is as if you can reach out and touch them.

I hope you will join me on this epic journey to Bhutan, a mountain realm whose sheer geograph-
ical inaccessibility ensures few travelers ever experience its ethereal wonders.

Sincerely,

Gary Wintz
