Rightso,TheChernobylNuclearPowerFacilityislocatednearthecityofPripyatin
thecountryofUkraine.TheconstructionoftheplantandthenearbytownofPripyat(to
housealltheworkersandfamilies)beganin1970.Thefirstnuclearreactorwas
completedin1977followedbythesecondin1978,thethird,in1981andfinallythe
fourthin1983.Atthetimeoftheaccident,therewere2otherreactorsunder
construction.The5threactor,whichwasabout70%finishedandhadanopeningdate
of1986.The6threactorwasplannedtobeinanewblockofthebuildingandwassetto
beopenedin1994.


Firstoff,letstalkaboutthenowabandonedtownofPripyat.Pripyatwasfoundedon
February4th1970,andwastheninthcitytohaveaNuclearpowerplantintheSoviet
Union.It'smainfunctionwastohousetheworkersandscientistsofthepowerplantup
untilaround1979whenitwasofficiallyproclaimedacity.Accesstothecitywasnot
restricted,whichmeansthatliterallyanyonecouldgothere.Thereasonitwasnot
restrictedisbecausebeforetheChernobyldisaster,Nuclearpowerplantswereseenas
muchsaferthanothertypesofpowerplants.Beforethedisaster,thecityofPripyathad
growntoaround49,000occupants,whichisquitelarge.

Alsoonseptember9th1982,apartialmeltdownoccurredinreactornumber1.The
reactorwasputbackintoservicewithinmonthsandnopublicwordcameoutaboutthe
meltdownultin7yearslater.Thiswaskindareallyforeshadowingthedisastrousfuture.

Sowhathappened?Well,onApril24th1986,ataround1am,systemtestswere
beingconductedonreactornumber4.Thiscausedanunexpectedpowersurge.When
theplantattemptedanemergencyshutdown,thereactorexertedahugespikeinthe
poweroutput.Thisleadtoareactorvesselrupture...whichisnogood.Afteraseriesof
stemexplosions,thereactorexposedthegraphitemoderatorofthereactortotheair
causinganignitionbasicallyreactornumber4blewup.Thisexplosionkilledtwo
workersintheplant.Theresultingexplosionscausedamassiveleakofradiationinto
theairwhichleadtothedeathsof28others,mainlyfirstresponders.Mostofthe

radiationcontaminatedBelarus,theUkraine,andRussia,butwouldhaveglobaleffects
intheyearstocome.

Followingtheannouncementofthedisaster,thepeopleofPripyatweretoldtoleave
astheUkrainegovernmentbroughtinbusesandmoveeveryoneintwodays.Thiswas
madepermanentasofficialshonestlyhadnoideahowbadthecontaminationwas.
Peopleworkingattheplantreallydidn'tknowhowseriousallofthiswas,andlittledid
theyknowthiseventwouldchangetheworldforever.

So,it'sbeenawhilesince1986,what'shappenedandwhatwillhappen?Wellsince
then,immediateareasoftheplantincludingthetownofPripyatandsomeareasinthe
nearbycountryofBelarushavebeendeemedasunsafeandofflimitstoeveryone.
About3040deathshavebeencompletelycausedbytheplantanddoctorsclaimthere
willbelotsmoreinthefuture.

Asfortheplantitself,reactornumber4wassealedoffandsurroundedby200cubic
metersofconcrete,literallyafewmetricshittons.TheUkrainiangovernmentalsolet
theremainingreactorsrun,asthecountrywasinabitofapowerdeficit.Thenin1991a
firebrokeoutinreactornumber1andbasicallyallofthemweretakenofflineafterthat.
Aninitialstructurewasbuiltaroundtheplanttoactasashieldtostopradiationleakage.
Thiswasbuiltfairlyquicklyasitwasextremelyneeded.Asyoucouldimagineitwas
prettyshitty.Anew,betterstructurewasannouncedin2003andstartedconstructionin

2010.Youwouldthinkitwouldbedonebynowbutno,it'sbeendelayedsomanytimes
it'snowexpectedtobecompletedin2017.Bytheway,theoriginalstructurebuiltalso
partiallycollapsedontothefacilityin2013.Since2011,thetowndoesoffershort,and
prettydamncooltoursoftheabandonedcity.Itsaalsosaidby2065,alloratleastmost
oftheradiationwillbecleanedup.Theareaisstillextremelyunsafeandwontbefor
quiteawhile,theareasbythereactorarepracticallyhellonearth.

SoeventhoughIcouldtalkaboutChernobylforhoursbecausetherehonestlyisso
muchtotalkaboutthisbutweneedtowrapthisup.
