TO KITCHEN PLANNING
Kitchen Ergonomics and how it transforms your kitchen.
Kitchen Ergonomics - It may sound like a big word but in reality it deals with the little things that
make your kitchen more comfortable to work in. A few of the kitchen platforms are a bit high, for the
average Indian woman, and cutting and cooking can be a strain on the back. Or the kitchen
cabinets are too high and reaching the corners is always a long stretch.
Art & Science - If cooking is a passion, then planning the perfect kitchen is an art. An art that
blends design with functionality, colour and space and engineering with every day conveniences.
Combining art and science to give you ergonomic kitchens is an important factor to effective
kitchen planning, which is a must for every Indian home.
Problem Solving - Big cities have constraints for space, and the most comprised area is the
kitchen. Fitting everything into it can be a major problem. But a planned ergonomic kitchen
ensures that every problem has a solution. From storage space to utility areas to conveniently
constructed kitchen platforms that are of perfect height, adopting Kitchen Ergonomics in your new
kitchen is a good way to ensure that it is designed with your specic needs in mind.

The Plan

A plan helps dene your budget and priorities. A good rst step, in the planning process, is
creating a list of features that are there in your current space, and deciding whether they are
sufcient, or need updating or elimination. Create a wish-list of items that you would like to include,
in order of priority begin with your basic needs and then include extras that can be added as per
your taste and budget allocation.
A plan also helps you stay on course. Sticking to the plan is important, as its easy to get carried
away in the process of a make-over. Sometimes this can prove to be excessive. So make sure you
stick to the plan.

Budgeting

Dening a budget makes the process more realistic. If you are working with a contractor or
even if you are doing it your self, a budget helps in knowing the nancial boundaries in
re-modelling.
After considering the base costs of materials and labor, always factor in a line for surprise
costs. Even when working with design professionals, unexpected changes are sometimes
necessary. For example, older homes may require additional structural, electrical, or
plumbing work in order to support the project.

Make a wish list

Write down all the things that you've always wanted in your kitchen. The appliances you need
to change, the storage space you need to increase, the crockery and cutlery you have seen in
magazines, and other elements of the kitchen that you think need to be updated. But while
doing so please remember to remove all the things you have accumulated over the years, that
are not being used and are occupying valuable space in your kitchen.
This is an important part in kitchen planning and will help determine the style and look of your
new kitchen.
Here are some important features to consider.

What is your kitchen type?

Do you use a gas cylinder or Pipe gas?

Or would you like to install an electrical HOB?

What are the appliances you wish to have?

Would you like to install a chimney? which type?

What type of refrigerator would you like to have?

What kind of sink would you like to have? Double or single? With a draining tray?

Ergonomics

Collecting Ergonomic data of people that are going to use the new kitchen, will ensure that
your platform height is at a comfortable level. The cabinets are placed at a convenient height
and that movement around the kitchen is comfortable.

36 inches or 3 ft, above the ground is the right height for most people. But extremely short or
tall people, or those with special needs, may want to modify that height to better suit their
needs. Working out a comfortable height is very important in planning your perfect kitchen.

Checklist

Write to your society and inform them of the work you will be carrying out, along with the
duration of the job and the hours involved, as getting permission is important before you start
installing your kitchen.

Plumbing, Electrical and Civil works

When remodeling a kitchen, you will need to do certain civil work, which includes breaking
and plastering, plumbing for the sinks and water outlets, and of course electrical work for the
plug points and lighting work as well.
