Description of the Background and Context. How does this activity fit with the lesson:
Previous activities:
Students have worked with family and descriptive vocabulary to this point. This lesson will
take place at the end of October. They have completed the following:
1. Preliminary work with the vocabulary. Students have read different stories and
completed interpretive tasks for reading, writing, and listening while working with the
Day of the Dead. The activity described here is simply a formative assessment, not a
summative assessment. The students have been working with Day of the Dead for a
week at this point.
2. Thus far in the year, students have had a review unit, likes/dislikes unit, and for
this unit will be studying family. In using culture, it will be a good review for all
concepts learned to this point for the year.
Activities that will follow:
1. Students will compare the U.S. celebration of Halloween to Day of the Dead
with a reading/writing activity.
ACTFL Standards met:
1.3- Learners present information, concepts, and ideas to explain a topic using
appropriate media and adapting to various audiences, readers, or viewers.
Students will use the comics to portray Day of the Dead concepts to their classmates.
2.1- Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationship
between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied.
Students will use the vocabulary that they have worked with to analyze the Day of the Dead
and examine why Mexicans make ofrendas, why they use certain items, and their outlook on
death.
