This document provides instructions for creating a soil profile in a jar to show the different layers of soil. Students are asked to place large rocks on the bottom to represent the bedrock. Then subsoil is added above the rocks, followed by garden topsoil on top. Students label and describe the layers, noting the materials in each, and answer questions about which layer supports plant growth, why the topsoil is darker, and which has the largest rocks.

Make your own soil proles. Materials A jar (such as a pickle jar) Chunks of rocks, sample of soil from the garden Sample of soil from the bottom of a big hole (perhaps at a construction site) Procedure Place large pieces of rocks and gravel in the bottom of your jar (two to three inches deep) Pour two to three inches of subsoil on top of the rocks. Place one to two inches of garden soil on top of the subsoil. Label the parts of the soil prole below. Describe the traits of each layer. Tell what kinds of materials are in each layer. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ Which layer of soil is the most important of plant growth? _______________________________ Why is the topsoil darker than the other layers? _______________________________________ Which soil layer has the largest rocks? ______________________________________________
