Dear Parishioners,
Pope Francis has proclaimed this a year of mercy out of a
concern that we easily lose touch with God's mercifulness. It is the
Lord's defining characteristic, yet we so often feel that God must be
harsh.
In our popular imagination we often use the story of Sodom and Gomorrah as a means
of seeing God as severe. We need to address this story if the message of the year of mercy is to
work. For this very reason today's first Reading from Genesis is timely. It shows God's zeal to
spare the two cities from destruction. Only when God is sure that there is no just soul in them
does punishment proceed.
It is also important that in this passage Abraham imitates the mercy of God praying for
the salvation rather than the death of sinners. That is exactly how we should respond to any
people whose sins disturb
us: keep on loving them and praying for them.
Often we think of the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah almost entirely in terms of abuse of
human sexually. But that issue is only a symptom of a much deeper problem, in hospitality to
the entire word of God. Here is where the other two readings come in. They show us how
hard Jesus works to keep us open to the word. In the second reading St. Paul celebrates the
gift of the sacraments, grounded in our baptism.
Thus begins our intimacy with Jesus who in the gospel teaches us how to pray. By
prayer we keep in contact with God and give the Lord the constant hospitality of our
hearts. By sacraments and prayer we surely avoid the fate of the two cities that God and
Abraham joined in worrying so long ago.
In today's world it is common to hear the complaint that people do not listen to each
other. Today's Gospel shows that such is not the case with God, who always listens to our
prayers. We who are made in God's image have the same ability to listen that God has.
We can put that ability to work by removing today to listen more deeply to our fellow
parishioners.
