the retirement of Dr. Hallett as Editor of ANALYTICAL

CHEMis appropriate to call attention to his outstanding contributions in developing this publication into a leading scientific journal.
Progress was slow during the first years following the initial publication of the Analytical Edition as a quarterly supplement to Industrial
and Engineering Chemistry in 1929. It was not until 1935 that a separate Advisory Board was named for the Analytical Edition. This original six-man Board remained intact through 1942.
In 1943 Walter J. Murphy became Editor of the Analytical Edition
and in the following year Dr. Hallett became Associate Editor. These
two men worked closely together, the former contributing an intimate
knowledge of the publication field, a persuasive editorial pen, a keen
enthusiasm for promoting his adopted field of analytical chemistry;
Dr. Hallett contributing for the first time for the Editorial Staff of the
Analytical Edition the background of a professionally trained scientist
with both academic and industrial experience.
Especially during the period 1945-47 and more gradually in subsequent years, a number of deep-seated alterations occured. It is unnecessary t o dwell on the obviously visible changes such as the adoption of
the present name, the cover design, the introduction of various features,
and the like. Less apparent, but of critical importance to a new Editor,
were organizational details such as the gradual evolution of the present
system of a 15-man Advisory Board of rotating membership, and the
building of an unusually competent office staff of assistant editors capable of handling the many routine details of a complex operation with a
minimum of outside advice. A backlog of unpublished manuscripts
was whittled down t o insignificant size and the reviewing and editing
procedures were streamlined to reach an enviable record of promptness
in publication.
I n the long run, most significant of all to the scientific world, however,
were gradual and subtle improvements in the character of the published
papers themselves. The following excerpts from statements of policy
illustrate the change. I n 1935 it was stated that, Articles dealing with
the fundamental or theoretical considerations of no immediate application to chemical analysis belong more properly in the Journal of the
American Chemical Society. By 1958 the guide for authors contained
this statement, Articles of a theoretical nature which hold promise of
future analytical applications even though not directly related to analysis a t the moment are included.
It is characteristic of Dr. Hallett that he chose to retire a t a time
when his house was in superb order. He passes on a legacy of solid
achievement. A firm base has been provided for continuing development in an era of change and challenge.
