SCOPE
This Technical Specification has been prepared by WEL and covers the
requirements for the supply of the tank base and bottom corner cellular glass
insulation materials used in full containment LNG storage tank(s).
The requirements for supplementary materials that may be used in
conjunction with the cellular glass are also covered by this specification.
This specification is based on the requirement for the Manufacturer to have
an effective and audited QMS conforming to ISO 9001 in place for the
duration of the order. All such procedures shall be suitable for the
environmental conditions and handling facilities available at the workface.
All vendors shall have a proven supply history of insulation materials of the
types described in this specification.

Note: Adhesives containing bitumen based products shall not be used for
bottom corner protection work.
4.2.1
Type: Suitable material for filling the open surface cells of the cellular glass
blocks is PC 85. Alternative materials such as fine sand will also serve the same
purpose.
4.2.2
Suitable materials for use as an adhesive when building the bottom corner
protection of tanks is Hydrocal B11. This is a Gypsum based material which is
inorganic and forms a non-combustible adhesive when mixed with water.
Alternative materials such as builders gypsum powder may also be used with
written approval from the Client.
4.2.3
4.2.4
Required Properties: The powder shall be mineral based & contain no organic
materials. Data sheets for alternative materials shall be supplied to the Client
for review / approval prior to use.
4.2.5
4.2.6
4.2.7
Mixing as Adhesive (For Bottom Corner work): The powder shall be added to
potable water in the ratio of approx 7 Litres water to 10Kg of powder. (Never
pour water into powder).
Once initial mixing is complete, let stand for 2 to 3 minutes before re-mixing. The
product is then ready for application.
Note: As adhesive the mixture has a short plasticity time and therefore large
quantities shall not be prepared in advance.
Packing: All packaging shall be suitable for keeping the material dry and
preserving product integrity during shipment to and storage at site. All
packages to be marked to identify the use / location at site.
