Typology
-Within a given field, the systematic classification of types according to their
characteristics
Housing Types
The type of house that one lives in reflects a lot about the occupant
Reflect the occupants personality, socio-economic status or means of livelihood
The wide array of housing typologies that characterize human settlements around
the world are characterized by:
1. Scale
2. Structural
3. Materials
4. Ratio to Land/Density
5. Mode of Occupancy
6. Layout Relationship to Open Spaces
7. Prices
8. Interior Spaces
9. Dominant or Sub-uses
Housing types according to their physical composition are basically categorized
under two main divisions:
a. Free-standing or detached dwelling
b. Attached or multi-user dwellings

SINGLE DETACHED - A free-standing residential building. It means that the


building does not share an inside wall with any other house.
SINGLE ATTACHED/DUPLEX - It consist of pairs of houses side by side as units.
They share a party wall.
TERRACED HOUSE/TOWNHOUSE - A row of identical houses that are joined
together.
BUNGALOW - It is a one-storey house, usually surrounded by a veranda.
APARTMENT/CONDOMINIUM - A multi-unit dwelling made up of several
apartments/flats/condos within a building.
PENTHOUSE - A very expensive apartment on the top floor of the building. It
occupies the entire floor.
MANSION - Is a very large and stately dwelling house for the wealthy.
MOBILE HOME - A large caravan, that can be installed on a permanent site
and that is used a residence. Also called manufactured home.
SHOP HOUSE (Mixed Use Building Form)
-Consist of shops on the ground floor w/c open up to a public in a covered
passage and has residential accommodation upstairs
-The shop houses would adjoin each other to form rows with regular faade.
-It is a vernacular style building type that is commonly seen in areas such as
urban Southeast Asia.
