Services on NGN

• PSTN/ISDN Emulation Service

• support PSTN/ISDN scenarios,
• with full interoperability with existing (legacy) PSTN/ISDN networks.
• provide the user with identical services and experience to that of the existing
PSTN/ISDN.

• Both real time conversational communications

(beyond voice) and non-real time communications

•Real-time Conversational Voice

•Messaging services such as IM, SMS, MMS, etc.
Services on NGN contd

• Should support the three classes of value added

service environments:
– IN-based service environment –
– IMS-based service environment – Support for IP
Multimedia Subsystem based service environment.
– Open service environment – Support for open service
environments.
• Push to talk over NGN (PoN)
• Point-to-Point interactive multimedia services,
• Collaborative interactive communication services
• Content delivery services
Services on NGN contd

• Location-based services,

• Internet access
– NGN to permit access to the Internet through existing
mechanisms

• Other services
– Virtual Private Network (VPN) services
– Services such as data file transfer, electronic mailbox and
web browsing
– Online applications (online sales for consumers, e-
commerce, online procurement for commercials)
Services on NGN contd
• Public Interest Services
– Lawful Interception.
– Emergency Communications.
– Customers with disabilities
– Network/service provider selection

• Consumer Assistance Protection and Privacy

– Do Not Call; SPAM.
– Malicious call trace
– User identity presentation and privacy
Migration Strategies

Migration Strategy must encapsulate business drivers in order to

minimize risks and maximize returns
How to Manage Migration?
Overlay Strategy (Revolutionary)
„ Identify Migration Paths that achieve
„ Deploy an NGN network in parallel with the existing
Business objectives

„ Consider renewed Business Models
„ Create Overlay NGN Network…

BSNL’s Plan
• Pilot Project for 200 KC IP TAX equipment,
– To introduce IP, in transit network is under
implementation

• Plan to add 6.4 million Class-4 Transit capacity

through IP TAX by 2008-2009

• Plan to Strengthen SSTP Networks, to become the

de-facto Signaling Network

• Replacement of Legacy switches nearing

expiry/expired switches to begin from 2008-2009

12
BSNL’s Plan contd.

• Plan to introduce SIP based services by 2008-

2009

• Migration to IMS
– introduction of new applications such as
presence information, videoconferencing,
multiparty gaming, community services and
content sharing expected to roll out in a phased
manner from 2009

• Full migration to NGN with replacement of PSTN

by 2015

13
BSNL’s Plan contd.

• To migrate the Fixed Line Access which at present

is designed for Voice to Broadband
– by a suitable mix of Wireless Access, Copper, FTTH,
FTTB and FTTC solutions

• To have IP backbone
– at Circle, Zonal and National level

14
BSNL’s Plan contd.

• Plans to be implemented in phases

– IP Core to support IPv6
– The IP Core spreads over more than 100 locations
with each node capable to handle 160 Gbps of
traffic

– The Core network to have two layer

structure
• Primary Nodes are fully mesh connected at 2.5 Gbps.
• The secondary nodes connected to at least two other
nodes with 1 Gbps links
• Plans to increase the interconnectivity to 10 Gbps
Actions items

™ Promote transition to IPv-6

– Scarcity of IPv4

™ Build up monitoring and interception capability

– Need to monitor the Network provider, Service Provider and
Access provider simultaneously
– The Centralization of Interception and monitoring to cut the
dependency upon the various service Providers

™ Develop/adopt standards for interoperability

– Many suppliers/manufacturers implementing standards
partially
– A classic case - H.248 Soft-switch from vendor x and Media
gateway from vendor y may not interwork
– Network supporting BICC need to interwork with network
supporting SIP-T in control plane
Actions items contd.

™ Redefine Interconnection issues

– Interconnection at many layers
– Distance based charging for Service access may not hold
– Address translation, transparency of Emergency Services

™ Redefine Numbering plan

– The Number portability
– Carrier Pre-selection both NLD & ILD
– Huge Routing tables in current internet

™ Redefine Quality of Service standards

– Access, Transport and delivery of Service in different domain
– ubiquitous, Mobility and technology Agnostic

™ Modify licensing scheme

– Access Provider, Transport Network Providers,
Service/Applications Provider
