Rolling roadblocks to hit I-65 soon

Scheduled closures will be near Sellersburg
CLARK COUNTY The Indiana Department of Transportation
plans to disrupt traffic on Interstate
65 Thursday, Aug. 13, to make
timely bridge repairs at the structure
over Perrys Crossing Road north of
Sellersburg, according to an INDOT
news release.
The supporting beam under I-65s
southbound right lane must be raised
and fitted with a replacement bearing system after the bearing component, essential for allowing but
controlling beam movement and
reducing stress, failed. I-65 motorists
have been experiencing random deck

movement under traffic loads and a

jarring drop in driving surface at the
last span of the bridge.
On Thursday, beginning at 10
p.m. weather permitting INDOT bridge crews hope to lift the
southbound side of the I-65 bridge
and use steel plates as shims to raise
the beam to its proper position. This
will require closing all I-65 southbound lanes as well as southbound
entrance ramps at Memphis and
Henryville interchanges for brief periods of time.
Indiana State Police will assist
INDOT by staging rolling road-

blocks across all southbound I-65

lanes approaching the bridge at Perry
Crossing Road. These slowdowns
are intended to create traffic voids of
approximately 20 minutes each.
INDOT officials anticipate two
staged roadblocks will be required to
restore the beam. If all goes extremely well, one 20-minute roadblock
may be sufficient.

All 3 members of
Indiana family die
after house fire
FREEDOM All three members of a western Indiana family have died from injuries following a fire
that gutted their home.
Dan Reynolds, 43, and his stepson, Bailey Little, 11,
died Thursday at an Indianapolis hospital a day after
the fire at their Owen County home near the town of
Freedom. The boys mother, Joy Reynolds, 41, died
early Friday morning at the hospital.
A passerby spotted the fire about 6 a.m. Wednesday, the Owen County Sheriffs Department said. The
family was able to escape the home, but they suffered
severe burns all over their bodies in the fire.
The couple married in January and had just moved
in the past couple of weeks into the home in a wooded
area about 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis, friends
and family members said.
Bailey was an honor-roll student and longtime little
league baseball player at Owen Valley Sports Complex. Wednesday wouldve been his first day of sixth
grade at McCormicks Creek Elementary School near
Spencer.
Hes one of the best kids that Ive ever met. He
was an outgoing kid, a good Christian kid, always did
the right thing for sure, said neighbor Jason Douglas,
who helped coach Bailey.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but
investigators believe they know what happened, said
Joy Reynolds aunt, Ginger Waterman.
They suspect the water heater had a gas leak, and
when Bailey went to let the dogs out at 6 oclock and
opened the back door, there was an explosion, she
said. They think Joy and Dan got out, then went back
in through the flames to get Bailey, and ran out with
him the same way.
The home also didnt appear to have working smoke
detectors, said Franklin Township Volunteer Community Fire Department Chief Dale Walker.
A candlelight vigil will be held Friday night for the
family at the Owen Valley Sports Complex on Field 8.

Indiana artist
chosen to design
bicentennial medal
INDIANAPOLIS An artist from southeastern
Indiana has been selected to design a commemorative
medal for the states 200 year anniversary.
The Bicentennial Commission announced Thursday
it had selected Donna Weaver of Vevay from a pool
of 50 applicants and more than 100 designs.
Weaver will work with a minting company to shape
her initial submission, titled Indiana Revealed, into
a design that will appear on the commemorative medal.
Indiana will celebrate its 200th anniversary of statehood in 2016.
Before she retired in 2006, Weaver was a contract
artist with the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, where she
designed coins and medals.

OUR OPINION

RCI worth a
shot for region

isk versus reward is an equation weighed

every day by businesses, government and
individuals.
Area county councils are in the midst
of such a question, one that we believe has more
upside than potential to harm those who choose to
participate in a new state program.
The Regional Cities Initiative was created earlier this year by the state to help incentivize cooperation among regions in Indiana. It IN SUMMARY
set aside $84 million
We urge area county counin to-be-collected tax
amnesty funds to be cils to vote to join a regional
split between the two development authority.
regions that can best
plan for and present a case for projects that attracts
business talent.
Area economic development agency One Southern Indiana saw this as a priority and created Our
Southern Indiana, a push to form a regional development authority of up to five counties in Southern
Indiana Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Washington and
Scott.
But time is short applications are due to the
state Aug. 31, by which time a five-member RDA
board must be seated and the process has not
progressed as smoothly as Our Southern Indiana
would have hoped.
The Scott County Council approved joining the
RDA, while Washington County declined. Clark
and Floyd councils could vote on the matter next
week. If a county opts to participate, all secondand third-class cities within the countys borders
automatically become members.
Once enough counties join, a five-member RDA
board will be picked. Our Southern Indiana had
hoped to allow for one appointment per county
to the board. The appointees cant be an elected
official or an employee of a participating local governmental unit.
Our Southern Indiana has identified several projects for which it would seek funding, including
redevelopment in South Clarksville and the former
Colgate-Palmolive plant and funding for the Ohio
River Greenway. Think about how far $20 million
could go in completing the greenway, a project vital to quality of life across Southern Indiana.
Some of the primary themes from RDA opponents are that those positions would be appointed,
not elected; that counties or cities could be tagged
with financial risk; and that the RDA could use
eminent domain to take land.
We understand the hesitation to grant decision-making power to a nonelected board, but such
precedent exists in the form of local redevelopment commissions, at River Ridge Development
Authority and the South Central Regional Airport
Authority.
Also, local governmental entities would decide,
by vote, whether to fund individual projects or to
allow the RDA to take land by eminent domain, so
there is a layer of protection built into the Regional
Cities Initiative.
So, the question becomes, what serious risk is
facing us?
Even if Our Southern Indiana is successful in
forming an RDA, theres at least a decent chance
our area isnt picked for funding by a state committee. Still, the boards formation would better
connect a team of regional leaders, which would be
a positive development.
If nothing else, the communities and counties of
Southern Indiana need to break down the walls of
isolationism that continue to plague them at times,
and a regional development authority would help.
We urge Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties to
pass an ordinance to participate in the RDA.

A passing from Oak Park

LINDON DODD

Local columnist

When faced with the past the

strongest man cries. Dan Fogelberg

or over a decade and a half on

New Years Day in my backyard in Oak Park, we had a
football game called the Oak
Park Bowl. It consisted of two twoman teams.
One team was made up of my
friend from down the street Moto
Pendygraft and me. The opposing
team was made up of my younger brother Roger and Motos older
brother Bo Pendygraft.
Bo and I are not sure exactly how
long the annual game took place, but
it certainly stretched more than 15
years. We started as young athletic kids, and when it ended our best
sporting days were surely behind us.
It was tackle and we played to win.
The games were played in snow, rain,
sunshine and often frigid January
temperatures. There were no cancellations due to weather conditions.
We played to a score of 10 with
each touchdown getting credit for one
point. The games are memorable for
me for a couple of reasons. First, it
was pure unadulterated kid fun. Secondly, in all of those years we played
the Oak Park Bowl in the backyard
of Lindon and Joann Dodd on Hawthorne Lane, Moto and I never lost.
For a career we went undefeated.
There were years we were down by
six or more touchdowns and yet always came back to win. It was a phenomenal streak. Moto Pendygraft was
my teammate for the only undefeated
career team for which I ever played.
Motos real name was Steve Pendygraft. Chances are I might have
never known that Moto was not his
Christian name except when his older
sister was mad and reprimanded him
as, Steven Wayne. His older brother was called Bo and one of his sisters

was called Peachie.

The older sister, Cheryl, was the
only one in the family referred to by
her real name. And I mean Bo, Moto
and Peachie were called that by everybody that knew them.
Steve passed away last week after
having had a fairly rough last few
years health wise. He was only 56
years old. At his service, many people stood up and said many wonderful things about him. I was one
of them and wanted to make people
laugh. Instead, before it was over, I
broke down.
Steve was such a part of my childhood that I know a part of my lifes
history left with him. We hadnt
stayed real close the last few years,
but when we did run into each other
there were the familiar greetings and
inquires about family. Then usually
we would talk about the good old
days as kids living in a nirvana in
an almost surreal place called Oak
Park subdivision in the 1960s. With
childhood friends, it just takes one,
Remember when to make a grown
man feel like a child again.
If you think that the world of
Leave It to Beaver was purely fictional, I would counter that living in
Oak Park during my time as a child
and young adult came real close.
I saw the Pendygrafts, the
Kocherts, the Isaacs and many other
wonderful friends daily in an almost
eternal playground where friends
mattered as much as anything could.
The houses of my friends were just
about as accessible to me as my own
house as it was to them.
The stories that come to mind are
almost legends. I told the story of hiding Wallace Pendygrafts sandwich
after he had worked an overnight,
16-hour shift and he chased me down
the street with a Wiffle Ball bat.
When I told my father, he suggested
he should take me back down and let
Wallace finish the job.
You see, my dad knew what it was
like to work an overnight, 16-hour
shift. I did not.
One night we were boxing in the
Pendygrafts garage and I somehow
managed to knock Bo out cold. As
he lay there for what seemed like too
long, Moto inquired if Bo might be

dead.
I assured him that he was not, all
the while thinking if he didnt come
to at any moment, I would have to
tell his parents Wallace and Bonnie.
If Wally was that mad at me for hiding a sandwich, I could only imagine
how ticked off he might be if I had
killed Bo in his garage.
Bo recovered and we all went on
to share many other wonderful Oak
Park adventures.
Wonderful memories flooded my
brain as I was speaking at the memorial service and then I caught Bos
eyes. That was it. I lost my composure for a few moments. Hence my
favorite column quote from Dan Fogelberg that I have used on multiple
occasions when it seemed appropriate.
Moto was part of what I like to call
the charter members of the Oak Park
Hall of Fame. The subdivision was
built in the late 50s and we were the
first generation of kids to set the tone
for kids younger than us to follow.
Some really wonderful people were
raised in my old neighborhood.
When I see them, it often seems we
are transported back to the old stories
and the best times of our lives. Another thing I always owed Moto was
that during a rough period in my life,
he and his roommate Kelvin always
had a meal to share and a couch for
me to spend the night when I had
no other place to go. You never forget friends that were there when you
needed them with nothing expected
in return.
Moto is the third of my childhood
friends from my block which consisted of Hawthorne Lane and Surrey
Lane to have died before the age of
60. As was pointed out by many, he
was the smallest of all the boys. But
he was also one of the toughest, cockiest and self-assured of the bunch.
And as so many testimonies bore
out this past Saturday, he certainly
had one of the biggest hearts.

I hardly know where to start. I just picked up
the News and Tribune and saw that Mike Moore
has ordered city employees to rip out the plants
from the medians on 10th Street.
First, he had the beautiful flowing plants cut
back, claiming that they were a traffic hazard. I
drive a very low sitting car and I have never had
any problems seeing oncoming traffic. Then, the
contract was allowed to expire, with the belief that
the city could care for the medians in-house. Apparently, this was wrong as the weeds took over.
The city of Jeffersonville is losing one of its
precious assets. I believe that this whole saga is
a result of Moores mismanagement and his fear
that Dennis Julius will win and restore the medians to their former beauty.
We need to come together and stop this plan
immediately.

INGREDIENTS
3/4 stick of unsalted
butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
11/2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 cup milk
1 cup blackberries

DIRECTIONS
Preheat your oven to 350

Doctor charged in overdose

deaths of three Indiana patients
BY TOM DAVIES

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS A former Indianapolis doctor faces reckless homicide charges in the overdosed on
painkillers that he prescribed them,
prosecutors said Friday.
Dr. John Sturman, 69, overprescribed narcotics for pain that resulted in the deaths, Marion County
prosecutors contend. The patients
died in 2010 and 2011 while Sturman operated a clinic at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis.
Sturman, who also faces 16 counts
of improperly prescribing drugs, lost
his admitting privileges at the Indianapolis hospital in 2012 after he
failed to complete medical charting
and documentation of patient visits,
the prosecutors office said.
Overprescribing pain medication
is not only unethical, but reckless,
Prosecutor Terry Curry said in a
statement. Addiction to pain medication is a widespread problem, and
physicians and medical personnel
who enable and endanger addicted
patients should be held accountable.
Sturman was jailed in Danville,

Pence woos business prospects at Yankees game

INDIANAPOLIS Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is
trying to woo new businesses to the state, treating relocation prospects to
a $24,000 gathering at a
New York Yankees baseball game this week.
The Republican governor was in New York
with other state officials
and business leaders on
a jobs mission, targeting states that traditionally have higher taxes. The
cost of the baseball game
outing included tickets
and refreshments for 65
people, The Indianapolis
Star reported.
The Indiana Economic
Development Corp. says
its budget paid for employees expenses, and the
governors expenses were
picked up by the agencys
foundation. Pictures posted to the IEDCs Twitter
account show Pence and
others at Wednesdays
Yankees vs. Boston Red
Sox game.

During the trip, Pence

courted businesses from
New York, Connecticut
and New Jersey. Pence,
who traveled to the New
York metropolitan region
on Wednesday and Thursday, pitched Indiana as a
low-cost, low-tax haven.
The trip was the states
ninth jobs mission to
other states.
The focus of this jobs
and economic development mission, like our
other trips, is to share
Indianas story as a lowcost, low-tax, low-regulation state that works for
business, IEDC spokeswoman Abby Gras wrote
in an email. During this
particular trip, our delegation met primarily with
location advisers, developers and company executives with site selection

responsibilities.
Traditionally, trade missions target oversees business. But in recent years a
number of governors, many in low-tax or Republican-leaning states, have
sought to poach businesses from other states.
Indiana has also sought
to recruit companies in
California, Massachusetts
and Illinois. Efforts to
recruit Illinois businesses prompted the states
Republican Gov. Bruce
Rauner to say he wants to
rip the economic guts out
of Indiana.
In response the IEDC
paid for an ad during the
AFC Championship game
between the Indianapolis
Colts and the New England Patriots.
Welcome
Illinois-based Franklin Well

Services to Indiana! Because Indiana has the economic guts to attract new
business, the ad read.
Pences political opponents dont think the governor should spend his

time out-of-state trying to

recruit business.
The governor should
be in places like Lafayette, Indiana Democratic
Party Chairman John Zody said in a written state-

ment, where he could

have seen firsthand why
we need to use some of
the $2.1 billion surplus to
invest in our crumbling
infrastructure.

Running toward grace

NANCY KENNEDY
Guest columnist

ou may not know the

name Tullian Tchividjian, but youve heard
of his grandfather, Billy

Graham.
Tullian is the former pastor of
Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church
in Fort Lauderdale. He resigned last
month after admitting to an inappropriate relationship with someone
other than his wife.
To his enemies, of which he has
a few, its a time to say, A-ha! Another hypocrite pastor shows his
true colors. But if youve ever
heard Tullian preach or read anything hes written, you would know
that he has always called himself a
great sinner in need of a great savior.
Ive heard it said that there are
only two types of people: sinners
and Jesus. Christians are only sinners who have run to Jesus for
grace and mercy. Its his righteousness that were covered with, not
our own.
Even so, that doesnt excuse Tullians sin and the consequences he,
his family and church are suffering
are real and painful. Sin is deadly. It
destroys people.
In writing about Tullian, blogger
David Zahl said, Human beings
are three bad days in a row away
from becoming a tabloid headline,
and most of us are already on day
two.

The one I call my Uncle Dad,

who has known Tullian since he
was 6, said when Christians sin
there are three things we dont
know about them and what they
faced: First, we dont know the
powers that were arrayed against
them. Second, we dont know how
hard or how long that person fought
against those powers. Third, we
dont know the horror of the shame
they felt when they lost the battle.
He also said that the most appropriate reaction we should have to
a fellow Christians sin should be
sorrow and tears, not finger pointing and glee. Not, I knew it! Not
even especially not even I
would never do that, because if the
stars are aligned just so and circumstances are just right, we just might.
The heart is more deceitful than
all else and is desperately sick;
who can understand it? laments
the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah
17:9). It shouldnt shock any of us,
although it does, when we find ourselves flirting with sin.
Years ago I wrote about lusting
after cookies. I wrote about passing
a bakery window and having a tray
of snickerdoodles catch my eye, of
making it a point to walk by the
bakery the next day and the next, of
telling myself that looking isnt the
same as eating.
But then looking through the
bakery window eventually isnt
enough, so I walk inside and get a
whiff of sweet cinnamon and sugar
and breathe in deeply.
Smelling isnt eating, I say.
Next, I start imagining what they
taste like. I think about their buttery
crispness, wonder if the cookies are
soft and chewy or if theyd snap if
I bit into them when I bite into

them. My if becomes when.

So, I look at the cookies through
the glass case inside the bakery, and
the person behind the counter asks
if Id like a sample.
Well, maybe a sample wont
hurt, I tell myself. A sample isnt
the same as eating a whole cookie.
I take the sample and am intoxicated by the aroma. The sugar
crystals and cookie crumbs tickle
my lips and the richness of the butter and vanilla thrill my taste buds
and I want more. A taste is not
enough. I want more.
And I would sell my soul to the
devil for it.
Although I wrote about cookies,
it could be about anything, from the
temptation to steal or use cocaine
to cheating on ones spouse. Weve
all been there. You know what Im
talking about.
We humans are three days in
a row away from being a tabloid
headline.
Sin is serious. It is a great destroyer, but Jesus is a greater savior,
and theres no sin too great that he
cant or wont forgive.
Even better than that, however, he
gives us power to resist sins temptations. He gives us grace.
He opens his arms and says,
Run, child, run!
So, from one sinner to another,
heed this advice as I do the same:
When temptation threatens to undo
you, run.
Run hard, run fast.
Run to Jesus.
Run and dont look back.

Castlemans journey to standout began with anguish

BY GREG MENGELT

greg.mengelt@newsandtribune.com

NEW ALBANY New Albanys recent Little League success brings a lot of eyeballs.
At a recent practice, some
future All-Star hopefuls were
running around the field like
10-year-olds do.
One of the kids stopped the
whole group in its tracks.
Josh Castlemans coming
up, he shouted. Its just batting
practice. But every one of those
eyeballs is on Castleman as he
whacks deep shot after deep
shot well over the New Albany
Little League fence.
In 2015, Josh Castleman is
one of the best Little Leaguers
in America.
Its hard to imagine that just
12 years ago, he was fighting
for his life.
Castlemans journey from
cancer patient to baseball stardom has been one filled with
tears, heartache, joy and miracles.
Our faith has been one thing
that has helped us through our
journey, Joshs father, Danny Castleman, said. If you
flip Joshs hat over right now,
youd see that he has scripture

thankful for that, for sure.
Tammy and Danny Castleman took their youngest son for
a standard nine-month checkup in February of 2003. He
received a clean bill of health.
Less than a month later, they
began to notice a bloated belly. Then there was the 102-degree fever that wasnt subsiding
through normal means.
The fever wasnt strep throat.
It wasnt an ear infection. The
Castlemans were stumped.

ALBANY, N.Y. The

family of a young driver struck
and killed by Tony Stewarts
car on an upstate New York
sprint racing track filed a
wrongful death lawsuit against
the NASCAR star Friday.
The lawsuit was filed as
Stewart returns to Watkins
Glen International on the oneyear anniversary of the fatal
crash.
The lawsuit accuses Stewart of gross negligence, saying
he gunned his engine and put
his car into a skid as 20-yearold Kevin Ward Jr. walked
onto the track after a crash
at Canandaigua Motorsports
Park on Aug. 9, 2014. The
car struck Ward, and he was
killed.
A grand jury declined to indict Stewart, who at the time
called it 100 percent an accident. There was no comment
from Stewart, who was with
his crew in the garage before
a final practice Friday afternoon. Stewart-Haas Racing,
the NASCAR Sprint Cup team
Stewart co-owns, also declined
comment.
Wards parents, Kevin and
Pamela Ward, requested a jury trial seeking unspecified
monetary damages, claiming
wrongful death, reckless conduct, gross negligence and
their sons terror and suffering.
Our son was truly the light
of our lives and we miss him
terribly every day, they said
in a statement. Our hope is
that this lawsuit will hold Tony
Stewart responsible for killing
our son and show him there
are real consequences when
someone recklessly takes another persons life.
There was no immediate
comment from Stewart.
Stewart, who frequently races in extracurricular events as
a hobby, was participating in a
sprint race on a dirt track when
Ward crashed into a wall after
a bump with Stewart.
The lawsuit notes Stewarts
reputation for having a temper
and claims that Stewart deliberately veered toward Ward after the collision.
Stewart could have easily
acted reasonably and with prudence to avoid striking Ward,
just as all other drivers had done as they passed Ward during
the yellow caution flag, the
lawsuit states.

Colts receiver Johnson lets his play do the talking

BY GEORGE BREMER

The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON Andrew
Luck scrambled out of the
pocket Friday but kept his eyes
downfield.
Its a classic look for the Indianapolis Colts quarterback, on
the run, extending the play and
looking for an opportunity.
Andre Johnson saw the passer
on the move and turned back
toward the line of scrimmage.
He found a spot in the flat and
sat down in his route, hugging
the sideline.
But cornerback Vontae Davis
was watching the play develop, too, and he anticipated Johnsons veteran move. Sprinting
to the spot, Davis suddenly was
right on Johnsons hip.
Then Luck rifled a pass toward the sideline, and Johnson
effortlessly pulled it in before
turning out of bounds for a comfortable gain.
This is vintage Johnson, a
wide receiver who often is open
even when he appears to be well
covered.
That, I think, is a big part of
camp, is one-on-one drills and

tight man coverage, Luck said.

You dont get that necessarily
in OTAs, the offseason, with the
rules on how physical you can
be. You understand that what
may not look like a wide-open
route, with Andre it really is because hes so big. Hes so physical and does such a great job
contorting his body to shield the
defender away or to put that ball
in a safe place. So its been fun
to see how his body moves in
that sense and see him go up and
make some plays.
With Johnson, theres often
more than meets the eye.
Off the field, hes relaxed almost to the point of alarm.
Colts head coach Chuck Pagano recalled a recruiting trip
when he was an assistant at
the University of Miami and
watched Johnson nearly fall
asleep in a bean bag as he spoke
with Hurricanes coach Butch
Davis.
The men left the room that
day convinced the wide receiver
had little interest in attending
their school. He not only signed
with The U, he caught 52
passes for 1,092 yards and nine
touchdowns as a junior and was

the third overall player selected

in the 2003 NFL draft.
Opponents who put too much
stock in Johnsons soft-spoken
nature are likely to receive a
similar shock.
Thats just the way Ive always been, the seven-time Pro
Bowler said in his trademark deliberate fashion. If you saw my
house growing up, it was quiet.
My mom and my little brother,
were all the same. Its a quiet
house, but were all competitive.
So whenever the competitive
juices get to flowing, we kind of
get revved up a little bit.
That approach has helped
Johnson lead the league in receptions twice (103 in 2006
and 115 in 2008) and receiving
yardage twice (1,575 in 2008
and 1,569 in 2009). Hes topped
the 1,000-yard receiving mark
in seven of his 12 NFL seasons despite playing with only
one quarterback who has been
selected for a Pro Bowl (Matt
Schaub in 2009 and 2012).
Luck has been to the Pro
Bowl in each of his three NFL
seasons. But Johnson wont be
asked to carry the load in this
passing game.

Wide Receiver Andre Johnson looks back has he runs a route during
Indianapolis Colts Camp practice on Friday. | PHOTO BY DON KNIGHT/
(ANDERSON) HERALD BULLETIN

T.Y. Hilton is a fellow Pro

Bowler at the other wide receiver spot, and the depth chart includes first-round rookie Phillip
Dorsett, rising second-year prospect Donte Moncrief and former Canadian Football League
star Duron Carter. Theres also
a pair of dangerous tight ends in
Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen and a hard-charging running

back in Frank Gore to take some

of the pressure off.
I always approach the game
the same, Johnson said. I just
think its different when you
have a lot of weapons around
you. We have a lot of guys here
that can make plays for us. So I
think thats probably the biggest
difference.

New Colt Herremans happy in his new home

BY GEORGE BREMER

The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON After
10 seasons in Philadelphia, Todd Herremans
suddenly found himself
looking for a new NFL
home in February.
The veteran offensive
lineman suffered a torn
biceps in Week 8 last
season but tried to play
through it with the Eagles
already battling multiple injuries up front. He
didnt make it through a
Week 9 start, however,
and was shut down for the
rest of the season.
When the offseason
rolled around, Herremans

was among the first of

several veterans to be released for salary cap relief.
Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson had some familiarity
with the versatile vet from
his days in Philly and
grabbed him off the open
market in early March.
Its been a wild ride, but
Herremans sees the past
few months as a blessing
in disguise.
In a perfect world,
Id play 15 years in one
city and retire there, he
said this week at Anderson University. (Being
released) was pretty devastating when it first hap-

pened. Up-to-date right

now, I feel like its probably the best thing that
could have happened to
me. Im so happy with
where Im at right now
with this group of guys.
Just being with a group
of guys that love working day-in and day-out.
Weve all got the same
goal.
Ironically, the lineman whose off-field life
was shaken up by the
move and whose on-field
life has been marked by
change quickly has become a pillar of stability
in Indy.
Herremans played every offensive line position

except center with the

Eagles. Theres been talk
of him being an option at
right tackle for the Colts,
but hes been planted at
right guard since his arrival.
Its one of the few safe
bets along a front five that
still is being sorted out.
Weve got a great
group, head coach
Chuck Pagano said. I
love that room. I love that
mindset. The proof will
be in the pudding. ... Our
goal is to obviously find
those five starters as soon
as possible so that we
can have that continuity
and the communication is
there.

Herremans had been

viewed as a leader with
the Eagles but said he was
hesitant to force anything
in Indy. He named Anthony Castonzo and Joe Reitz as leaders in the O-line
room, and hes happy to
fill another role.
My approach was kind
of just come in, feel it out
and be a helping hand to
anybody that wants advice or wants some help,
Herremans said. My
M.O. my whole career
has just kind of been lead
by example.
One of the things that
drew Herremans to the
Colts was the overall talent in the locker room.

Theres been open talk

of chasing a Super Bowl
title in February, but the
wisened vet knows nothing can be taken for granted.
You cant just join a
team then all of a sudden
expect to win a title,
Herremans said. I think
that with the additions
that the Colts have made,
with the core players that
they have, I just think
that its a very good situation and maybe a higher probability. But, with
the group of guys that we
have, were just taking to
day-to-day and trying not
to look that far in the future.

Louisville crushed by Durham in 10-1 loss

DURHAM, N.C. The
Louisville Bats and Durham
Bulls started their series Friday
at Durham Bulls Athletic Park
where the Bulls poured it on the
Bats with a 10-1 win.
Right-hander Robert Stephenson (4-1, 3.15 ERA) started
his first road game for the Bats
(57-58) and struggled through
four frames earning his first loss
of the season. He gave up five
runs (all earned) on eight hits,

walked four and struck out five.

Donovan Hand replaced
Stephenson in the fifth inning
with a rough outing. He went
two innings, gave up five runs
(all earned) on five hits, walked
three, struck out three and allowed one home run.
Left-hander Matt Moore (1-2,
3.31) started on the mound for
the Bulls (55-58) and threw four
hitless innings for his first victory. He went six innings, allowed

one run (earned) on two hits.

Moore walked one and struck
out seven.
Starting off strong in the first,
the Bulls scored five while making it through their lineup.
Second baseman Taylor Motter doubled to score right fielder
Mikie Mahtook. First baseman
J.P. Arencibia followed with another double to score left fielder
Joey Rickard and Motter.
With the bases loaded, Ste-

phenson walked in the fourth

run of the inning and center
fielder Corey Brown scored off
a sacrifice fly for the fifth.
In the fifth, the Bats had their
first hit of the game and scored
their lone run after third baseman Juan Perez grounded out
to score right fielder Brennan
Boesch. The Bulls followed
with another run from an RBI
single by Rickard.
The Bulls continued to pour it

on the Bats in the sixth. Designated hitter Nick Franklin doubled and Mahtook hit a threerun-homer to make the score,
10-1.
The Bulls and Bats will face
off for Game 2 of the series at
6:35 tonight at Durham Bulls
Athletic Park. Projected on the
mound for the Bats is lefty John
Lamb (0-1, 3.27) and for the
Bulls righty Matt Andriese (3-2,
2.33)

Gordon drew on school experience to hone road course prowess

BY REID SPENCER

NASCAR Wire Service

WATKINS GLEN,
N.Y. How has Jeff
Gordon schooled other
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers on road courses throughout his career?
By getting schooled
himself.
Gordon boasts more
Sprint Cup victories at
road courses than any
other driver in NASCAR
history, having won five
times at Sonoma Raceway and four times at

Watkins Glen International, site of Sundays

Cheez-It 355 at The
Glen (2 p.m. ET on NBC
Sports Network).
And though Gordon
struggled in his first road
course outing in a stock
car, his background
served him well.
I remember going to
Sonoma the first time and
turning the car over on
its side in the tire wall,
Gordon said Friday after
opening Sprint Cup practice at Watkins Glen. I

felt like I was pretty lost.

The second year, I really
felt a big progression, and
then the third year, which
I think is when I won my
first road course race, I
think in 1995 or 1996
(actually 1997 at Watkkins Glen), everything
just started to click. We
worked hard at it. There
is no doubt we worked
hard at it. That hard work
paid off.
Gordon also had a baseline of experience on
which to build his resume

as a road course racer.

I went to enough
driving schools to get
a little bit of knowledge, said Gordon, who
on Sunday will race at
WGI for the last time as
a full-time Sprint Cup
driver. Prior to coming to NASCAR, I was
pursuing everything. If
somebody gave me an
opportunity to get in a
race car or to go to a
driving school, then I
was packing my helmet
and heading that way.

I did it up at Mosport
[Canadian Tire Motorsport Park] in Canada. I
did it with Skip Barber,
and I think after I started
NASCAR I did the one
out in Sonoma and I also did the one in Phoenix with Bob Bondurant.
Ive done a lot of those
schools, and then I drove
a lot of different types of
cars. I remember driving
a Super Vee out at Indianapolis Raceway Park
before I ever got into NASCAR.

I did some go-kart racing, too. I didnt do any

shifting, but I did some
go-kart racing on road
courses. I mean I went
to the IKF [International
Kart Federation] Nationals and finished fourth
in 1980 or something in
a go-kart. Its not like I
didnt have any road
course experience whatsoever, but I never had
it in a big car. I enjoyed
the challenge. It was fun
to do something different
than ovals.

CASTLEMAN: Star hit six homers at state tournament

CONTINUED FROM PAGE B1

very beginning. Thats

part of what helped him
survive this battle.
Six months later, at the
age of 3, the cancer nightmare was back. The tumor
was even bigger this time.
That led to several days in
intensive care.
We were like, youve
got to be kidding me,
Tammy Castleman recalled. But we were like,
God will lead us through
this. He has to this point.
I still remember him
in ICU with tubes up ...
Danny Castleman struggled to continue, with
tubes coming out of everything. I put an old
stuffed animal, a dog on
his head, something we
used for comfort. When
we were playing around
with this goofy dog, it was
a way of distracting him
from what was going on.
He loved those stuffed
animals. He was having
fun because mom and dad
were playing with him. He
couldnt physically get out

of bed. We werent sure

if he was going to make
it out of that room. That
was a long few days.
Dr. Hirikati Nagaraj determined, at his size and
age, Josh was a candidate
for surgery this time.
He looked at the scan
and said, Its time,
Tammy recalled. He
said, I see a tumor on his
left kidney and its the
mama. Im going after
it.
Dr. Nagaraj, who is
known in the medical
community as Goldenhands, removed the tumor that was feeding all
the other tumors. The
now-retired surgeon took
10 percent of Joshs kidney, but the operation was
a success.
He came out and said,
I got the sucker, Tammy recounted.
The Castlemans say
having Kosair and Dr.
Nagaraj in their backyard
was a true blessing.
There were discussions
about going to the Mayo
Clinic, discussions about

going down to St. Jude in

Memphis [Tenn.], Danny Castleman said. The
more we talked, the more
we looked into it, we realized that we had just as
good of people here as
there is any place. Thats
a huge blessing, as you
might imagine.
After eight months
more of chemo, in May
of 2006, the tumors were
gone. Josh Castleman was
cancer-free just before his
fourth birthday.
Danny Castleman said
his son, after the physical
anguish he suffered, is
now far more active than
the average 13-year-old.
In fact, he recently began
doing pushups and situps
after noticing that the best
players in the world are
the strongest players.
Josh also added that, If
this crazy cancer comes
back, stronger is better
... and Im going to be
strong, Danny recalled.
Thats the wisdom of a
kid. He knew on his own,
strong is better if you need
to fight.

Josh Castleman says

he doesnt remember the
ordeal, only the frequent
return trips to the doctor
that still occur, though far
less often, to this day. As
of this year, the visits have
become annual instead of
monthly.
He was really good
about handling it, Danny Castleman said. We
didnt handle it as well as
he did. He was a trooper.
He just rolled with it.
Because of the cancer, Josh suffered from
hemihypertrophy, which
caused one side of his
body to grow faster than
the other. His left side
was growing faster than
his right. His kidneys were
affecting his growth. Even
the left side of his face
grew faster than his right
side.
Josh was forced to wear
a molding helmet to even
the growth of his head.
Its funny, you fast
forward, and hes a big
left-handed kid and the
left-hand side of his body
is the one thats a little

bigger, Danny Castleman

said. To the eyeball, you
cant really tell, but his
left side is a little bigger.
Thats from back at 17-,
18-months-old.
The cancer, the chemotherapy, the hemihypertrophy none of it has
stopped Josh Castleman
from thriving on the baseball field.
As a 10-year-old, he
helped lead New Albany
to a Minor League state
championship. Last year,
he was part of the Great
Lakes Region championship team as one of three
11-year-olds on the team.
This postseason, the
Christian Academy seventh grader has been New
Albanys leader on the
field. At the state finals in
Jasper, he went 14-for-19
(.737) with 12 runs, nine
RBIs, six homers and two
doubles at the plate. On
the mound, he allowed
just one run in nine innings.
He played great,
teammate Jaxon Murphy
said. He had three home

runs against Wabash and

he pitched phenomenal
against Highland.
He played amazing. He
played outstanding, said
Austin Oppel, one of New
Albanys other returning
players. He did as much
as he could do to put us
on top.
Danny Castleman believes his son has an inherent advantage on the
diamond.
He comes back from
adversity and setbacks in
life, thats just the way
hes wired, Danny Castleman said. Hes just a
tough, tough kid.
Starting Sunday, Castleman will try to lead New
Albany to back-to-back
Great Lakes championships and its first Little
League World Series appearance.
Hes a great guy, Oppel said. Hes always
ready for anything that
comes. Hes always helping other people on this
team.
