1. Explain briefly about the following:


(a) Variational method
(b) Importance of Boundary conditions. [8+8]
2. With a suitable example explain the formulation of finite element equations by
direct approach. Assume suitable data for the example. Use I-D analysis [16]
3. The members (1) and (2) are circular in cross section with diameters of 10 cm
and 20 cm respectively. Determine the displacement at the node where load is
acting.{As shown in the Figure1} [16]

4. A cantilever beam is loaded with point load at end and Uniform distributed load
throughout the beam of length L m. Explain how will you proceed with the solution
using FEM? [16]
5. Derive the expressions needed for the evaluation of the stiffness matrix of the
isoparametric four-noded finite element shown in figure2. Assume plane stress
and plane strain condition. [16]
6. Consider a brick wall (0.7 W/m K) of thickness 30 cm. The inner surface is at
280 C and the outer surface is exposed to cold air with heat transfer coefficient of 36
W/m2 K at -150 C. Determine the steady state temperature distribution and heat
flux through the wall. [8+8]
7. Discuss the methodology to solve the Eigen value problem for the estimation of
natural frequencies of a stepped bar? [16]

1. Determine the circumference of a circle of radius ‘r’ using the basic principles of
finite element method. [16]

2. An elastic bar is having a uniform cross sectional of area ‘A’ mm2 and length ‘L’
mm. It is fixed at one end and other end is allowed to move along the axis of the
elastic bar. A force ‘F’ KN is acting at the free end and the Youngs Modulus is ‘E’
N/mm2 . Calculate the displacement at the free end. [16]

3. For the pin jointed truss shown in figure. If E = 200 Gpa, determine{As shown in
the Figure1}

(a) Element stiffness matrices

4. Derive the element stiffness matrix for the 2-noded beam element [16]

5. Calculate the nodal forces of the four node axisymmetric finite element shown in
figure2 when the element is subjected to centrifugal loading. [16]

6. Derive the element conductivity matrix and load vector for solving 1-D heat con-
duction problems, if one of the surfaces is exposed to a heat transfer coefficient of
h and ambient temperature of T∞? [16]

1. (a) Define Geometric Variance.


(b) What is meant by displacement function?
(c) Give the importance of Pascal Triangle. [4+6+6]

2. With a suitable example explain the formulation of finite element equations by


direct approach. Assume suitable data for the example. Use I-D analysis [16]

3. Derive the element stiffness matrix for the plane truss element. [16]

4. A beam of length 2 m is fixed at both ends. Estimate the deflection at the center
of the beam where load is acting vertically downward of 10 kN. Divide the beam
into two elements. Compare the solution with theoretical calculations. Take E =
2 × 1011 N/m2 , A = 250 mm2 . [16]

5. An axisymmetric ring element is shown in figure1. Derive the matrices, [B] and
[D]. Take E = 2×105 N/mm2 and µ = 0.33. [16]

6. Estimate the temperature distribution in 1-Dimensional slab as shown in figure2.

8. (a) Explain the convergence criteria in finite element discretization.

2. With a suitable example explain the formulation of finite element equations by
direct approach. Assume suitable data for the example. Use I-D analysis [16]

4. Estimate the stiffness matrix and the deflection at the center of the simply sup-
ported beam of length 3 m. A 50 kN of load is acting at the center of the beam.

5. (a) Derive strain displacement [B] matrix for a 3 noded Triangular element?
[16]

(b) The nodal coordinates and the nodal displacements of a triangular element,
under a specific load condition are given below:
Xi = 0, Yi = 0, Xj = 1 mm , Yj = 3 mm, Xk = 4 mm, Yk = 1, u1 =1 mm, u2
= -0.05 mm, u3 = 2 mm, v1 = 0.5 mm , v2 = 1.5 mm and v3 = -1 mm. If E
= 2 × 105 N/mm2 and µ = 0.3. find the stresses in the element. [8+8]
6. The outside of a heating tape is insulated while the inside is attached to one plate
of 20 mm thick stainless steel plate (16.6 W/mK). The other face of the plate is
exposed to the heat transfer coefficient of 5 W/m2 K at 200 C. The outer surface
of the plate is maintained at 700 C. Heat is supplied at the rate of 500 W/m2 .
Determine the temperature distribution of the face to which the heating tape is
attached? [16]
