Group
Come join the group on Monday, August 1st at 1 pm,
as we discuss Vanessa Diffenbaughs timely novel,

We Never Asked for Wings

From the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The

Language of Flowers comes her much-anticipated new novel
about young love, hard choices, and hope against all odds.
For fourteen years, Letty Espinosa has worked three jobs
around San Francisco to make ends meet while her mother
raised her childrenAlex, fifteen, and Luna, just sixin their
tiny apartment on a forgotten spit of wetlands near the bay.
But now Lettys parents are returning to Mexico, and Letty
must step up and become a mother for the first time in her
life.
Navigating this new terrain is challenging for Letty, especially
as Luna desperately misses her grandparents and Alex, who
is falling in love with a classmate, is unwilling to give his
mother a chance. Letty comes up with a plan to help the family escape the dangerous
neighborhood and heartbreaking injustice that have marked their lives, but one wrong
move could jeopardize everything shes worked for and her familys fragile hopes for
the future.
Vanessa Diffenbaugh blends gorgeous prose with compelling themes of motherhood,
undocumented immigration, and the American Dream in a powerful and prescient
story about family.

Thursday mornings at 11 am, join Feldenkrais practitioner Jill Van Note at Moriah Senior
Center for a series of exercises to reduce pain, improve posture, and help you feel like the
best version of you!
Moving Forward with the Feldenkrais Method isnt a conventional exercise program. It is
very different. Instead of stretching or straining your muscles, the Moving Forward
program features exercises that harness your brain to help your body. These exercises are
safe, stress-free and involve no muscular exertion. Instead, they involve small easy
movements and a pleasant process of paying attention to yourself.
What can this program do for me?
Moving Forward with the Feldenkrais Method can help you to reduce muscular aches and
pains, improve your posture, improve your balance, and increase your flexibility and ease
of movement. It can also help you to improve your breathing, reduce stress, improve your
mood, and give you a sense of energy and optimism. The exercises in the Moving Forward
program are also helpful after stroke or injury. In addition to helping you to heal and
regain function, they can also help to rebuild your confidence in your body.

Discussion
Group
Come join the group on Monday, August 29th at 1 pm,
as we discuss Laura Amy Schlitzs historical novel,

The Hired Girl

Winner of the 2016 Scott ODell Award for Historical Fiction

A 2016 Association of Jewish Libraries Sydney Taylor Award
Winner
Winner of the 2016 National Jewish Book Award for
Childrens and Young Adult Literature
Newbery Medalist Laura Amy Schlitz brings her delicious wit
and keen eye to early twentieth-century America in a
moving yet comedic tour de force.

Fourteen-year-old Joan Skraggs, just like the

heroines in her beloved novels, yearns for real life
and true love. But what hope is there for adventure,
beauty, or art on a hardscrabble farm in
Pennsylvania where the work never ends? Over the
summer of 1911, Joan pours her heart out into her
diary as she seeks a new, better life for herselfbecause maybe, just maybe, a
hired girl cleaning and cooking for six dollars a week can become what a farm girl
could only dream ofa woman with a future. Newbery Medalist Laura Amy
Schlitz relates Joans journey from the muck of the chicken coop to the comforts
of a society household in Baltimore (Electricity! Carpet sweepers! Sending out
the laundry!), taking readers on an exploration of feminism and housework;
religion and literature; love and loyalty; cats, hats, and bunions.
