Artifact 6.2.1 (Activity 6J)
Activity: Attend conference on math sequencing and use knowledge to change sequencing at
SELSD.
Total Time: 10 hours

Description: On April 7, 2016, I attended a workshop on sequencing math classes. There was a
focus on how algebra fits into the curriculum and when students should take it. Following the
workshop, I worked with a colleague to create a mathematics sequence for SELSD and presented
it to our guidance counselor. The sequence starts at 6th grade and focuses on classes going
through 10th grade, while still providing guidance for 11th and 12th grades.
Reflection: Since Ive been at SELSD, our math sequencing has changed multiple times, and
Ive had some hand in those decisions. However, it has typically been done without serious
consideration regarding PA Core standards (similar to Common Core). This workshop focused
on aligning classes to ensure that PA Core standards are covered while still allowing students
flexibility to move into advanced classes or fall back to more basic classes. The workshop was
quite useful, giving us guidance into how to structure our math classes to serve our students best
interests. After creating the proposed schedule for math sequencing with a colleague, our
guidance counselor approved it, and we will start implementation next year.
