For Presentation

I Would like to welcome all our guests and our examiner to this presentation. My name is
Selamawit Fekadu. Today I am going to present my paper which is entitled as The SocioEconomic Impact of Iddir; on the Members of Iddir Association in Jigjiga Town: in the Case
of Kebele 06 Iddir Association
Just as an introduction, Iddir is one form of our culture in which peoples are come
together to share their happiness, their difficulties and etc. In order to do this, they
deposit some money based on their rules and regulations. It also plays a great role on
addressing the socio-economic demands of members and community at large. Therefore,
due to its usefulness, many research has been conducted to address some issues and
come up with possible recommendations. Even though many researchers tries to figure
out on different problems none of them come up with the socio economic impact of iddr
on its members. In my presentation I am going to show this impact.
In doing so I propose some objective (both general and specific), likewise, the general
objective of the study is exploring the socio-economic impact of Iddir on the members of
kebele 06 of Jigjiga town. To achive this broad objective I set specific objectives
1.

Examining the socio-economic benefit of peoples who join Iddir.

2.

Investigating the change in the wellbeing of those Iddir members.

3.
Identifying social and economic factors which motivates people to be a member of
Iddir.
4.
Examining the roles of regulation in maintaining the collaboration among its
members.
Data Collection and Methodology
In this section, I explicitly state the sample size, method of data collection and data
analyses. Accordingly, by using Slovins formula, I estimate the representative sample size
as 75. And my population that I am studying on it is like 300 people. (it is total number of
iddir members).
I use both primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected though interview,
focus group discussion and questionnaire. While secondary data is collected from the
archives. While collecting data using questionnaire, I used simple random sampling just
to give equal probability of being selected. This will also reduce bias in the outcome of
the paper.

From the quantitative perspective, it has been found that there are 53 males respondent
and 19 females respondent. Of this, the majority of them are found in the above 41 age.
Which is 37.5% of male respondent and 15.28% is female respondent. In total, those
respondent who is above age 41 (both female and male) is more than half of the total
respondent which is 52.8%.
The second largest category is those people who is in the age category of 35-40 which
constitute 20.83% of male category and 8.33 in female category. Overall, 29.17% of the
respondent falls into this category. This is followed by peoples who is in the age category
of 26-34 and finally those who are in the category of age 18-25.
As far as the marital status of the respondent is concerned, the majority of the
respondents (45.83%) were found to be married, and (30.56%) were found either
divorced or separated, and 9.72% of the respondent is widowed.
Another very important point in the composition of the respondent is their religion. From
the sample size, 59.72% of the total respondents belonged to the Orthodox religion; and
the remaining 8.33%, 31.94%, of the respondents were from Protestant and Muslim
respectively. Of course since this iddir is belongs to Gurageh people all my respondents
are also Gurageh.
Another important issues in composition of the respondent is the educational level.
Accordingly, (27.78%) of the respondents are illiterate which is second largest percentage
next to those who have elementary education which comprises (41.67%) of the total
sample. In addition to this those people who has high school level of education accounts
18% and finally those people who complete their first degree and above constitute 12.5%.
Most of the respondent also addresses that one of the factor that motivates people to
join this iddir is People need to participate in the social affairs and also helping those who
need especial assistance especially when they are far away from the place where they
born of. This also make closer to one another. This is the factors that motivates those
members to join this Iddir. In addition to this, they also suggest that after joining this Iddir
they get many benefits like they can give borrowing or lending for the people according
to their closeness. This helps them to satisfy their basic needs even in the difficult time.
Being the member of this iddir by itself makes the economic status of the member to
place in some advance level than before. Because it helps them to have saving habit,
credit opportunity and empowering womens.
Findings from the interview also confirms that that involvement in the Iddir has
multifaceted benefits to the members not only in terms of boosting the economic status

and livelihood of the members, but also in changing the view of the members on the
benefit of working collectively.
The Iddir leader also says that they collect monthly fee which amounts 50Birr and in
addition to this they also get additional money from renting house which is added to the
stock of the Iddirs treasury.
Conclusion and Recommendation
In this study, the social and economic impact of Iddir on members has been assessed. It
was found out that involvement in the Iddir has multi variant effects to the members.
Being as a member of this iddir, the overall quality of life has changed and their
psychological, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of life as well. The benefits which are
obtained from the Iddir are further expanded to include support during the funeral and
mourning time, the presence of collaborative team sprit which is backed by the existence
of rules and regulations and finally, the existence of economic benefits has resulted a
notable change in the overall aspects of life of members of the Iddir.
Recommendation
Even though I state many suggestion, I would like to put here some of them which I
believe is necessary.
1. Promotion of the capacity building activities of Iddirs need to be considered for the
sake of successful community based development interventions.
2. Iddirs need a more coordinated assistance and capacity building and networking
with the efforts of non-governmental as well as governmental bodies and other
community based organizations and umbrella Iddirs association.
3. Iddirs should expand their scope of engagement other than limiting themselves to
support the funeral and mourning ceremonies. Hence, community development,
community mobilization and community organization agenda should be
incorporated.
4. Awareness raising education sessions should be staged so as to increase the level of
involvement of members of Iddir which in turn promotes the sense of belongingness
and sense of ownership of members.
