a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a
story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a
topic, summarize the text.
b. Intended Learning Outcomes:Students will understand where, why, and
what to look for in a text. To be able to summarize a text and connect the text, comparing
and contrasting ideas in many books.

a. Introduction to lesson:
i.
What is your favorite movie? Describe what it's
about in one to two sentences.
b. Lesson development:
i.
Teacher guided practice, with verbal and visual
examples of the main idea of a given topic. Ex. The main idea can usually
be located if you can determine what the topic is. To find the topic, ask the
simple question, Who or what is this about? What is the chief point that
is being made about the topic?
ii.
Explain to students that finding the Main Idea is
something that we do naturally in our everyday lives whenever we tell
someone about something we've read, listened to, or watched (be sure to
include lesson adaptations for students with special needs)
iii.
Have students work collaboratively to select a piece
of media or article to determine the main idea.
c. Assessment activities:

i.
From assigned reading have students identify the
Main Idea of each chapter and give supporting details. Students will
complete a handout answering the following: 1. Title of the chapter 2. The
Main Idea of the Chapter (summarized in 2-3 paragraphs 3. Evidence from
the text: I know this because. (Be sure to include adaptations for
students with special needs and include scoring guides)
