When Rev. Dr.
Loletta Barrett came in this
morning to pick up the school
supplies we had collected and receive the
check, she got tears in her eyes when I told her
the amount of the check. Here is the text of her
thank you:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I am overwhelmed by your kindness and
generosity! And I know the children in
Kalkfeld, Namibia of the United
Congregational Church of Southern Africa will
be too. Thank you 1000 times. I will be
sending the supplies immediately with the
hope that in 6 weeks the children will have
them to finish up the school year with the
items they need to succeed. If I can get them to
send a picture, I will make sure you get it?
Thank you again so very much!

CareerWise is a non-profit that works
with homeless individuals to help find them a
job. Part of the training could involve teaching
basic math skills, using 8 x11 spiral
notebooks or composition books. If your
students (or grand-students) have USED spiral
notebooks from last year that will be discarded
for brand new ones, CareerWise would love to
take those discards off your hands! There will
be a box in the office where you can drop them
off. Thanks so much for helping CareerWise
and our homeless neighbors
Grace is something you can never get but only be given. The grace of God
means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you
are because the party wouldnt have been complete without you. Here is the
world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Dont be afraid. I am with
you. Nothing can ever separate us. Its for you I created the universe. I Love
you.
Theres only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you reach out and
take it. Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too. Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking

REGIONAL NEWS
What Is Mission First?
If youve been aware of our churchs calendar for the upcoming weeks, you may have
noticed that an event known as Mission First is scheduled for our building on Saturday, August 13.
You may be wondering What is Mission First? Heres some information about it from the General
Office of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
It is likely your faith community has done some visioning in the last few years. The general
expression of the Church is doing the same. As the year 2020 nears, its time to listen for Gods
continuing call and to seek together where God is calling Disciples next in our mission and ministry.
Addressing the 2014 General Board, General Minister and President Sharon Watkins set out
a challenge: The time has come to lighten our load and tighten our focuson mission! I am inviting
our church, in all its expressions, to join in a conversation on Gods mission for Disciples today.
The General Board, proposed a program known as Mission First. It includes a call to
mission and a pilot model for helping us identify a common direction in mission.
Mission First addresses the need to find a new shared focus in mission. We are not setting
aside pro-reconciliation/anti-racism, new and transforming churches or leadership development.
Mission First seeks to help Disciples identify the next mission priorities God has for us as we move
toward the year 2020 and beyond.
At the heart of this process are whats known as Mission Gatherings. These gatherings have
been held in Regions across the US and Canada since the fall of 2015. The one scheduled for the
Pacific Southwest Region is set for Saturday, August 13 from 10 A.M. to1:00 P.M. It will take place in
fellowship Hall and will include lunch which will be coordinated by Lin Garcia and Donna
Woodbridge with help from others. The input from our Regions Mission Gathering will be
combined with input from other Regions. All this data will be put into the hands of a Church-wide
Mission Council. This body, using all of the in-put it received, will identify a mission focus for us
Disciples for a specified time in the future.
With our Regions gathering being held in our building, we have a unique opportunity to be
part of this grass roots process that will help to shape the mission of us Disciples in the years
ahead. Registration information for the August 13th Mission First event will be available in the
weeks ahead. (See flyer on the bulletin board above the water fountain. We encourage you to be part
of Mission First!

PATHWAYS OF HOPE
California Senator Bob Huff selected Pathways of Hope as the
Senate Districts Nonprofit of the Year for 2016! The Senator visited
Pathways of Hopes Fullerton campus on July 12th to present the award
to our Board of Directors and staff.
Senator Huff said, Pathways of Hopes dedication to providing food, clothing, housing,
comfort, and guidance to people who are in desperate need is to be commended. The services you
provide to local families and individuals strengthen not only your clients, but also your entire
community.
Pathways of Hope is honored to receive this recognition, said Executive Director Pam
Sousa. For over forty years, our organization has been dedicated to rebuilding lives of the hungry
and homeless. We are so grateful for the support of our many partners in the community, without
whom we would not be able to touch the lives of thousands of struggling individuals each year.
Eric Azariah, Chair of our Board of Directors, said, Since our organization was founded in
1975, we have grown and adapted to respond to the many needs of the hungry and homeless in
Orange County. It is truly an honor to be recognized as the 29th Senate Districts Nonprofit of the
Year, and we hope that this award will shine a light on the hard work and dedication of Pathways
many volunteers, donors, community partners, Board of Directors, and staff.
29th
Pathways of Hope is thrilled to have received this award, and we know that it is all thanks to you,
our supporters, who make it possible for us to rebuild lives every day!
