Parabolic Tunnel: Quadratic Equations Project

An engineer designed a parabolic cross-sectioned tunnel of width at the base and

internal height as shown below.

Height = 7 m

Width =
6m

H e ig h t = 7 m

W id th = 4 m

1.

Use your creativity and mathematical skills to determine if the truck

with the minimum dimensions (shown in the above diagram) will be
able to pass through the tunnel. Consider that the truck moves exactly
centered in the tunnel itself. (Criteria D: identify and select strategies)

Use any resources you like, such as the computer, the GDC, printed scale
drawings, etc.

2. Given the following conditions and requirements, redesign the parabolic

tunnel to allow the truck with the maximum dimensions above to pass
through the tunnel.

The maximum internal width allowed for the tunnel is 8 m.

The internal height needs to be minimized as much as possible.

A clearance of 1 m between the truck and the tunnel needs to be

provided.

The tunnel cross-section should have a parabolic shape.

The equation of the parabolic cross-section needs to be given. You must

explain each step you took to be able to get to this equation. (Criteria D:
Apply strategies)

The actual minimum clearance between the truck and the tunnel needs to
be calculated somehow, using a printed scale drawing or digital image or
accurate mathematics. (Criteria D: justify degree of accuracy)

3. The larger the surface area of the tunnel entrance, the larger the cost of the
tunnel. Is the parabolic tunnel design suitable? Justify your response by
showing one or more diagrams. (Criteria D: justify that the solution makes
sense)
