School:
Parent Packet

Dear Parents,
The most important element of any classroom management system is
an abundance of positive feedback. There will be many opportunities for
each child to be recognized and rewarded each day.
Below I have listed the rules of our classroom as well as the
positive and negative consequences that accompany them. This classroom
management system is based on the philosophy that no child has the
right to take away another childs right to learn or a teachers right to
teach.
Classroom Rules:
1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
3. Raise your hand and wait to be called on.
4. Be respectful and kind to all.
5. Be on task and do quality work.

Consequences:
Positive
Learn more
Earn respect
Earn Sand Dollars

Negative
Think time
Miss part of recess
Write letter home

Lets work together to make this a successful year for your child!
- Miss Tolbert

Please review these rules and consequences with your child, then sign and return
this portion indicating you understand the rules and expectations for this year

Dear Parents,
This year we have a class website (misstolbert3rd.weebly.com). This website
will be used to keep a class calendar, as well as to post class newsletters and
updates. I have also been looking into a way to have the students use the website
to work on keyboarding and writing publication projects by using our school
computers. They will also be able to access math and writing resources via links on
the site.
The following is a request for permission to post your childs photo, first
name, and school work on our class website. Childrens last names, or any other
personal information, will not appear on the site. My goal is to use the website to
keep you informed and up-to-date on your students work at school and hopefully
give them an opportunity to practice their keyboarding, as well as publish work
they are proud to display. Please fill this out and get it back to me as soon as
possible.
Thanks,
Miss Tolbert

anything for your child, we use the following items through the
year:

Crayons
Post-its
Dry erase markers (math practice)
Glue sticks
Wet erase markers/Vis-A-Vis (timed tests)
Ziploc baggies (sandwich or gallon)

sending them to school with your student, we will appreciate any
donations.

Miss Tolbert

Communications
Communication is essential in our classroom. There are several methods I use to
communicate with parents. Please CHECK PLANNERS EVERY NIGHT! All daily assignments,
reading minutes, and upcoming projects/events are written in the planner, along with any
behavioral issues. The planner is a great place to write any questions or comments. If you
need a quick response, please e-mail me (chelsi.tolbert@jordandistrict.org). I will check
my e-mail and phone messages every morning and evening. I am available to discuss any
questions or concerns before or after school as well.
Please also use our class website (misstolbert3rd.weebly.com) to view our weekly
class newsletter, which I will be posting each Friday. You can also use the Contact page
on the site to send me a quick message.

Homework
The purpose of my homework program is to reinforce what we will be learning in
class, provide opportunities to practice skills and critical thinking, and develop good study
habits and responsibility. Homework folders will be sent home each Monday and are to be
returned the following Monday. I know many students are involved in after school, extracurricular activities and some nights completing 20 minutes of reading and/or other
assignments is simply not possible, so I am giving students a full week to complete
assignments.
Weekly homework will include math reinforcement (math sheet or thinking game),
math facts practice (multiplication), daily reading fluency practice, and spelling practice.
Homework may also include any work not completed in class that day. Work that was not
completed in class will be sent home and due back the next day.
Students are expected to read 100 minutes each week (the equivalent of 20 min.
each week night). You will need to record in your students planner the amount your child
reads each day, sign, and return it to school. They will be checked each Monday with the
other completed homework assignments. Students can read library books, books you have
at home, grade-level magazines (TIME for Kids, National Geographic Kids, Highlights, etc.),
and e-books. I have provided several links on our class website that can be used for
reading practice.

Planners
Students have been given a planner that will be used daily to record important
dates and events along with the daily schedule and their spelling words for that week.
This planner is to go home each night and be returned to school each day. Parents must
sign saying they have reviewed it. Planners are a great way to communicate with me as
well. Please watch for notes from me regarding your childs progress or behavior.

Absent/Late Work

If your child is absent, I will place all the work he or she missed on his or her desk.
It is your childs responsibility to take the work home, complete it, and return it to me.
The work will be due the Monday after they come back to school, with the regular
weekly homework.
Turning homework in on time teaches students to be dependable and responsible. If
turning work in on time becomes a problem, then points will begin to be deducted for late
assignments. A parent/teacher conference will be arranged if the problem persists. If
there is a family emergency or any other circumstances that may prohibit your child from
completing work on time, please contact me and we can discuss work completion options.

Language Arts
Word Study and Vocabulary
For our word study we will be following the Words Their Way program. Every week
students will receive 20 words that focus on a pattern. Throughout the week, please
work at home on the pattern while studying the words. A mystery word that follows the
pattern may be given on Fridays spelling test. Vocabulary should be worked on
throughout the week in preparation for the test that will be given Friday.

Writing

Students are involved in daily writing activities. Students will be involved in the
writing process in creating their own stories, as well as persuasive and opinion pieces.
Throughout the year I will teach various types of writing. We will work on a variety of
writing projects such as biographies, stories, essays, letters, and poetry. Resources can be
found on our class website for writing practice. We will be using Utah Compose this year
to prepare our students for writing to prompts and help with writing stamina, this is a
resource that you can access at home online at utahcompose.com.

Handwriting

Students will be learning to write in cursive this year. Please continue to help your
child practice at home.

Math
Students will be regularly tested on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
math facts through timed tests. PLEASE work with your child at home on those facts
through activities such as flash cards, worksheets, oral problems, word problems, and
games involving these concepts. Links can be found on our class website that students can
use to practice facts through online flashcards and games.

Birthday Celebration
Birthdays are always a special event and I am excited to celebrate it with your
child. If you would like to bring treats remember that they MUST BE STORE BOUGHT.
We will hold a birthday party at the end of each month for those students who had
birthdays, students who have birthdays in off-track months will be celebrated with
birthdays for the month prior to going off track (ex. September birthdays will be
included in the August celebration).
