A garden of potted plants, perhaps with a makeshift greenhouse, may be

used on a site that is only temporary available for a garden. Container
plants may be grown to be part of other permanent gardens, or they may
be sold or taken home to apartments with sun or balconies, for a portable
herb, flower, or kitchen garden.

Design: Farmer's Market

The location for the Farmer's Market is the most

convenient choice for vendors' vehicle access and
parking. However, the area is dark and gloomy,
especially in winter.

Lighting, wall murals, and seating can help brighten

the area and draw more people to the Saturday
farmer's market, perhaps providing enough business
to allow for a second weekly market day.

Design: Community Plaza

Currently, this area has many major community

destinations, including the Community Gardens,
Dayspring Church, a baseball field, soccer field, and
pool.

Making all these locations accessible to one another,

yet still with enough privacy to function, would be a
good opportunity to increase an integrated space for
community events.

Design: Therapy Rain Garden

Ecological stormwater management is appropriate

at this location, and could provide native plant
habitat, space for a recreational therapy program and
possible collaboration with youth organizations or
schools, and an educational space showing practical
water management practices.

Rain gardens are designed to absorb water

and support wet/dry tolerant shrubs, trees, and
herbaceous plants, such as:

Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii)

Blue joint grass (Calamagrostis canadensis)
Sedge (Carex spp.)
Rush (Juncus spp.)
Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans)
Blue vervain (Verbena hastata)
Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea)
Meadowsweet (Spiraea alba)
Blue flag (Iris versicolor)
Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris)
Bottle gentian (Gentiana andrewsii)

(left) section shows flow of rainwater over the area, with

roof runoff channeled into an underground cistern for
landscaping use.
