DEMOSTRATIVES

Definition: Demonstrative Pronouns(takes the place of a noun). The demonstrative pronouns


are the same in form as the demonstrative adjectives, but they always have the accent mark:

Examples in Spanish:
That sweater is yours; this is mine.
Ese suter es tuyo, sto es mo. "sto" replaces "sweater"
This blouse is mine; that is yours.
Esta blusa es ma, aqulla es tuya. "aqulla" replaces "blouse"
This table is mine, that one is yours.
Esta mesa es ma, aqulla es tuya.
I want two books;
give me that one (near you) and that one (yonder).
Deseo dos libros;
dame se y aqul.
Examples:

Qu es esto? What is this [unknown object]?


Esto es bueno. This [referring to a situation rather than a specific object] is good.

El padre de Mara muri. Por eso, est triste. Mary's father died. Because of that, she's
sad.)

Tengo que salir as las ocho. No olvida eso. I have to leave at eight. Don't forget that.)

Examples:

Quiero esta flor. No quiero sa. I want this flower. I don't want that one.
Me prob muchas camisas. Voy a comprar sta. I tried on many shirts. I'm going to buy
this one.

Me prob muchos sombreros. Voy a comprar ste. I tried on many hats. I'm going to
buy this one.

Me gustan esas casas. No me gustan aqullas. I like those houses. I don't like those
over there.

Demonstrative pronouns can also be used to express the former and the latter in
English.

Maria e Irma son chicas bonitas; sta de Mxico, aqulla de Guatemala.


Mary and Irma are beautiful girls; the former from Mexico, the latter from
Guatemala.
